Is there anything to alleviate pain in elderly besides pain meds?

A fellow caregiver asked...

Our mother fell in January. A team of Doctors refused to operate. They said she was dying and took her off all medications. WE had her sent back to her nursing home where 6 months later she is still living. She still knows everyone and can communicate for short periods of time. She is heavily medicated to help control the pain. Her Dr told us it is too late to have a second opinion re surgery.(why did he not suggest it sooner?) We have recently heard that she might be able to have a nerve block. At this point she has lost a lot of weight...muscles have deteriorated. We are just wondering if there is anything to help alleviate some of the pain and discomfort in what could be her last weeks of life.
