How can I get help for my ill sister, who doesn't have any family nearby?

Debbies asked...

My 65-year-old sister, who lives in Poquoson, Virginia, is very ill. She has blood cancer; she was also in a car accident a week ago and totalled her vehicle. She has no family around; we are all in other states. My sister is depressed because she feels very alone and helpless. She needs assistance with grocery shopping, and doesn't even have the strength to go look for a new car. Do you know of any groups in the area (a church association, perhaps) that could provide company and help until she's on her feet again?

Expert Answer

Caring.com isn't (yet) able to provide information on local eldercare resources, so we can't put you in touch with any specific organizations to help your sister. We suggest that you contact the Area Agency on Aging in your sister's community. They should be able to give you the names of local programs that could help your sister. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
