The Reserve at Royal Oaks is small. So, there's a nice ratio between nurses and residents. They're very helpful in the process of moving Mom in. It's an extremely well-done and well-designed community. There are hallways of rooms in little neighborhoods and each room has its own bathroom. It's laid out so that there's ease of movement and ease of access for everyone, including the residents. It's very clean and welcoming. There are activities all day long. We didn't have to get a hospital bed. They had beds and dressers for us. They do laundry in-house. Mom has been engaged the entire time she's been there and they've been fantastic. You're getting what you pay for.

We have chosen The Reserve at Royal Oaks for our uncle. The place itself we didn't particularly care for, but it's the staff there that is the reason we chose that place. They're the most caring on-top-of-issue people. They're just incredible. I don't even know how to describe them, but I've never seen staff like this in these kinds of places. It's a Montessori-type program that they run there. One of the things that the director said is, 'Everybody gets up every day unless they're actively dying.' They have a nice outdoor garden, and when the weather is nice, they get people up and get them out of their rooms. They don't want them to sit in their rooms all day long, just lying in their bed watching TV. They get them up and wheel them around and make sure that they eat in the dining room. They don't just leave them in bed, bring them a tray and hope for the best. The place is worn and old. The furniture is hell-looking. It's just awful. But it's like almost you can't tell a book by its cover. The covers are pretty worn out, but everything else is really in order. The important things are in order. If they put in new furniture and new carpets and just kind of revive the place a little bit, it would be probably a 5 because it's laid out well.
