Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Palm Harbor

  • Florida is a popular destination for retirees, partially due to the state’s tax-friendly attitude. Seniors in Palm Harbor who collect Social Security benefits or other forms of retirement income don’t pay any state income tax, which keeps more money in their pockets.
  • The state sales tax rate, however, isn’t as friendly. At 6%, Florida’s sales tax is the 23rd highest rate in the nation. Pinellas County adds another 1% in local sales taxes. However, seniors in Palm Harbor pay less in sales taxes on necessities, such as groceries, which are completely tax-exempt. Prescription and nonprescription drugs are exempt from state taxes and are only taxed at the local 1% rate.
  • Pinellas County joined the AARP Age-Friendly Network in January 2017 and developed an action plan by identifying existing programs and services for older adults across the county, then applying an aging mindset to every aspect of life. Palm Harbor seniors benefit from Pinellas County having a livability index score of 55, which means it’s an above-average community. The county received top marks for its proximity to stores and markets, convenient transportation options, air quality and civic engagement, among others.
  • Palm Harbor seniors benefit from lovely year-round weather. For six months of the year, residents experience comfortable temperatures between 70 and 85 degrees, and measurable snow is an extremely rare occurrence. Residents enjoy 246 sunny days each year, and the coldest month of the year has an average low of 51 degrees, putting its wintertime comfort index at 9.1 out of 10.
  • Although Palm Harbor doesn’t have a local hospital, seniors don’t have far to travel to receive quality care. Two top hospitals are less than four miles away. AdventHealth North Pinellas and Mease Countryside Hospital both have on-site emergency departments, medical-surgical ICUs and cardiac ICUs. Mease was also rated high performing in colon cancer surgery and treating heart attack, kidney failure, stroke and COPD.
