Why does washing of their hair with shower bother an Alzheimer's patient?

Mom has declined getting a shower for the past week. Today when she was getting bathed, they started to wash her hair and she literally went ballistic. Is this normal? Her Alzheimer's is getting worse in some areas, she broke her hip in September and is coming up on her 100th day in rehab. Is to go home next week. Thanks! ????
