I am a friend or relative of resident
My mother has been a resident of Stoneridge for about 15 years. Several times she has had to be in Avalon, the skilled nursing wing. Most recently, she broke her shoulder and was in Avalon for about a week before we got her out of there and hired private care. She is 88 years old. It's costing us $2,000 a week to get her adequate care. Our experience with Avalon was truly terrible. First of all, let me say that every person who works there has been wonderful--caring, competent, and trying their hardest to help people. But Avalon is a separate for-profit business that is not affiliated with Stoneridge, in spite of what they say in the sales office. In fact, they flat-out lied to us when my mother bought her apartment. They said that the transition from independent living to assisted to skilled nursing would be seamless. Wrong. A person has to be in a hospital for three nights before they can even be admitted. Once there, the ONE doctor they have (who seems like a competent and caring person) is only required to see each patient ONCE EVERY THIRTY DAYS. That's not a typo. That's if they're "well." Please tell me that anyone in skilled nursing is "well." What's worse, they do not allow a person's own doctor in, because of Medicare regulations. Thus my mother, who was immobilized with a splintered shoulder, was UNABLE TO SEE A DOCTOR ON A REGULAR BASIS. Luckily for us, her own doctor sneaked in and saw her anyway. We spoke with the director and the head of nursing, both of whom were very nice and admitted that their hands were tired by the regulations of both Medicare and Avalon's own rules. They both admitted that our grievances were perfectly understandable and reasonable, and they understood why we had decided to get our mother out of there so she could receive decent care. Avalon, of course, was perfectly happy with this arrangement since it meant we would now be paying for our mother's care. It's astonishing to me how a respected health care organization can get away with this. DO NOT allow anyone you love to be in this facility. To say that the care is unacceptable is putting it mildly. It's not the people who are at fault. It's corporate greed, plain and simple. I'm so, so sorry that my mother had to go through what she went through. And mad as hell that we have to pay $2,000 a WEEK to get her the care she needs. Shame on Avalon.

My mother-in-law went into Avalon Health Center after several foot injuries and surgeries which required constant nursing care. Although the main facility, Stoneridge, is a long term senior living facility, they offer short term care for individuals required specialized and constant rehab attention. Her insurance company coordinated the care with Avalon in advance so that a room and treatment plan was available the moment she got there. I felt bad for having to leave her in someone else's care, but my wife is currently deployed to Iraq and my work schedule would not provide the opportunity to care for her needs. Once I had her settled in to her new apartment, nurses and rehab specialists immediately came to her room and addressed her needs. They were exceptionally warm, exceptionally friendly, and very encouraging for her progress. Avalon is state of the art, and offers the best in rehab services for a wide range of needs. Overall, this facility is top notch and I would not hesitate to use this facility again!
