I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband was admitted to Bell Trace's sub-acute rehab facility late on a Saturday afternoon. I don't know what the rest of the facility is like, but the rehab experience was awful. It's NOT the staff; they were nice and tried to be helpful - there's just not ENOUGH of them. And I know it's a crisis in the healthcare system. By Tuesday, I was facilitating an immediate discharge. One night his call button didn't work (this was confirmed the next morning by me and a staff member). He wanted help getting to the bathroom (still wobbly and weak from a serious illness - hence the reason he was in rehab). He called for help and then attempted to get to the door. He was crawling on his hands and knees. It was too late and he had an accident. I don’t know how long he had to wait for help. A night or two later, his ROHO cushion (which didn't fit the wheelchair they gave him) slipped off the seat with him in tow. He couldn't catch their attention; they found him sitting on the floor reading his Kindle. I saw him deteriorate each day. He came home yesterday; he's not incontinent as he was before and he's up and walking, fixing his own breakfast and lunch. My heart goes out to the direct care staff that struggle to provide care.

Bell Trace Senior Living seemed like a really good option for my parents. There was a waitlist for the separate homes. That would have been the best option, but then they had some nice apartments that were good. The residents all seemed happy. There seemed to be a lot of things going on. They had weekly outings. It was really nice and really pleasant. It was a very accommodating and really pleasant place. The staff was amazing. They were professional. They kind of knew what to ask and I feel like they had seen it all.

Bell Trace is a nice place, but they don't have any openings. They got a wait list there. I got a couple of friends that live over there that love it, and their amenities seem like a little bit more than the other place has. But I make my own fun and I don't throw bags at holes, and I don't crochet. My friend has friends that lived there before, so of course, if you have friends when you go there, you're going to like the place better. The staff was good. I met the marketing director and some maintenance guys. The rooms were very similar to others I visited, but they were more expensive. You get what you pay for. The one bedrooms are larger. They have more elevators, too. The dining area was nice. I saw their menu, and they're on an allotment for food. They serve three meals a day, but each one of them has a price on them. My daughter went with me and she thought they had more to offer. The staff treated us nicely. The grounds were spotless. When you come in, the entryways are floral. Bloomington is a beautiful city, to begin with, but when you go in, it looks like you're going to a resort. The apartments all have big decks that you can walk out on. It's covered, and you can sit out there. They have a greenhouse and a garden. If you were a gardener, you could plant vegetables and stuff like that.

I liked Bell Trace Senior Living because it seemed like a great community. They have good service and they also have an extended care or nursing home in case something happens. The food was very good. They have lots of activities. The dining room seemed very nice. They had nice librarians. The facility was well maintained. They have transportation to the doctors and every place else, so that was a plus.

Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to leave a review!

I visited this facility

We went to Bell Trace Senior Living. My grandmother is going to the independent area, but we toured the assisted area, too. We did the first tour virtually. Then, we did a second tour this Friday and my grandma liked how many activities and involvement they have. They go to a lot of places and they have a transportation system set up there. It's got a lot of resources. The rooms were nice, and the bathrooms were huge. About the entertainment side, my grandma said something about it being hard for her to be bored when she was living there. It was very clean. I didn't see anything that looked questionable. They had a separate area for breakfast. Their dining area was smaller, but it looked nice and spaced out well. They have a patio outside with a gazebo and a couple of flower beds. They had activities going on outside one of the times we visited. They had some kind of thing where the staff was outside with smores. There are parking lots outside for most of the building, but they still use that space to do activities and stuff with the people there.

Provider Response

Thank you for your comments. We are thrilled to have your grandmother at Bell Trace!

The thing I liked about Bell Trace Senior Living was that the apartments were gorgeous. They had a lot more activities than the other places I visited too, which would have been nice. The one thing I didn't like about it was it was huge. I would be afraid that my mom would have been overwhelmed by its size. Other than that, it was gorgeous. If I ever had to leave this house, I think I would have chosen Belle Trace because there was so much more to do there. The people I met there were very, very nice. They had a wonderful exercise room and they had an exercise class that was going on at the time. They were also setting up for bingo. They go to all of IU auditorium's scheduled programming, which would be really, really nice for me but not so much for my mom. It was nice that they had a bus that went there for every program so that you could pick or choose what you wanted to go to. It was just another nice thing to do there. They had a nice bus system and they went on drives. They have a lot more activities, which I would have enjoyed.

My mom is in Bell Trace Senior Living. The staff is very nice. Any time we want something done like we want to change her care a little bit or add another service, they're very willing to do that. They've added things like medicine, reminders, and things like that which come in very handy. Sometimes when I'm on the phone with her, I hear them come to the door and make sure she's taking her medicine. She just always has good things to say about the people that come in and help her, whether it's to help her in the shower or her medicine or help her do some stuff around the apartment. She has the freedom to go down to the little mailbox area or go to some of the little areas they have set out for people to kind of gather and mingle. It's just nice that she has a lot of things to do. They have a place to get her hair done or her nails. They have a nice gym actually for her to go to and do her physical therapy and exercises. We get updates and this is important right now, in the time of COVID. We get emailed updates on the Covid situation there and that's comforting to know that we're kept in the loop. So far, so good. Since she's been there, there have not been any outbreaks or anything like that, so it's good that they are being so careful. They also had people come in for those who wanted to get their booster shot so it can be done right there and that was helpful. We are trying to work with them to get her long-term care started and it's just been kind of a struggle. We're not sure exactly where the ball is being dropped because they said they've got everything in long-term care. We go back to long-term care and say we have proof they've sent the papers and it's just been one of those things where it's not been as easy getting long-term care started as we were told it probably would be. I'm sure that every case is different, so they probably thought it would be easier than maybe it has been. That's the only reason I'm kind of hesitant about giving the highest rating because it's just been a very difficult process. Sometimes it's hard to know exactly where the real problem is when you're dealing with two different entities.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR LOVED ONES HERE! My Mom passed after a few hours at this awful place. Not enough staff on hand and they are not knowledgeable about taking care of those with illnesses. Whoever looked after my Mom admitted they didn't realize her needs. There was NO doctor on call when she passed. This place is neglectful and should be investigated or shut down.

I visited Bell Trace Senior Living Community. Their food was excellent, but the rehab part was awful. They are understaffed, and they had too many cases of COVID. The assisted living part was nice and clean, but it was just like a factory. It wasn't personalized enough, and there wasn't enough staff. It's like a five-story building, and there are apartments in there that are independent living and assisted living. I just didn't feel that it was personalized enough, and it was very, very expensive. The two ladies I met during the tour were very pleasant, though, but it does not affect them.

We chose Bell Trace because it is close to where my mother's home was and connected to many of the communities that she's a part of already. We also felt good about the types of activities that are available at the center; my mother is already in several groups. We feel like it is a good fit. There are some staff members on the night shift that I'm not too happy about. However, the people that I interacted with have all been 5 stars. I'm not excited with the food in the assisted living area nor about some of the things I have seen there. Nevertheless, my mom is involved and doing activities, and I'm very happy about that.

Bell Trace is a full-service place, and it's not as fancy as a lot of places. When a guest is going to use the cottage option, they will completely redo the insides to your tastes, and they're done in a nice way. The cottages are extremely comfortable, and I would buy one as a home. You have to basically buy it, and the money goes back to you (as a percentage) if you leave. It feels like you're moving into a a smaller home that you would want to move to. They have a shuttle bus that will take you to wherever you want, they have scheduled days where they go downtown or to the mall area, and if you need help shopping, they help you. They have a very good exercise program, entertainment, they have a library that's pretty nice, and they have arts and crafts. It's much lower key, it's not like they're trying to cheer you up, and they treat you like an adult. I ate there twice, the food was very good, and they're amenable to doing it the way you want it. It's not fancy food, it's very healthy, well-done, and they have a real chef. If you like to drink wine, you have to bring it yourself, but they don't even have a bottle opener or corkscrew. The staff is nice and friendly, knowledgeable, and they didn't try to hide things.

Provider Response

We really appreciate you taking the time to review Bell Trace! We'll make sure our dining staff have a corkscrew the next time you join us for a meal.

My mother has lived at Bell Trace in Independent living for 2 years. It has been an excellent fit for her! She loves the staff and all of the activities! Chef Phillipe is beyond amazing! We love that the menu is a full, restaurant style. Daily specials are great. An added bonus is that she can have her meals delivered if she wants to dine in. I highly recommend this community.

Bell Trace is fine. The people who lived there do not rave about the food and I was not able to eat there, so I don’t know. The rooms are very nice. There are not as many balconies, but the units are well-appointed. They have activities, but not as many as the other facility.

Mom had been in rehab at a place called Bell Trace. This is very structured. They make sure they eat, and they do things on a routine. That's good for mom, because with memory problems, it's my understanding that you need some structure, and you don't want to get out of your routine. She was there about 6 or 8 weeks. They were very accommodating as far as showing us what they did have. This was the second or third time she had been sent to Bell Trace for a rehab, for different things she's had over the past several years, and all the time, they've been really good. They have a lot of activities and a lot of it is hands-on. They have painting classes and riding classes. It's almost like they have a lot of independent-living people there, and so they participate in those activities. They take them out and go to concerts and a lot of different outside activities other than just the drugstore and the grocery store. It's a good place for someone else that might be a little more fit.

i have been familiar with these types of facilities before and the staff at belltrace are very nice and courteous. the facility itself is very nice. it has a small cul de sac community feel to it.Usually these places smell like hospitals, but belltrace is airy and fresh with lots of scenic views and sunlight.

Very good, expensive as is with most assisted livings but they have a great staff. I enjoy the tiered system that allows my loved one to purchase on the services needed instead of paying a flat price for ALL of the services. It's a dynamic facility with many options for independent, assisted living, and 24 hour care. The response time by employees is slow but that's per usual for these kinds of places.
