What could be some causes for ankle swelling?

Miseryinwi asked...

I only have swelling in my right ankle and lately it is happening more often. It is not painful, I do not have diabetes, I am about 5lbs overweight, and am otherwise very healthy. What could cause this and what type of Dr. would help diagnose and treat this?

Jane Andersen, DPM, is a board-certified podiatrist in private practice in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She provides surgical and nonsurgical foot and ankle care to all types of patients, including the geriatric population in her area. With the American Podiatric Medical Association, she has worked to educate the public on foot and ankle health.

There are multiple causes of ankle swelling. If the swelling is limited to one ankle, it can be caused by tendinitis, a cyst or other soft tissue mass, varicose veins, trauma, infection or arthritis, amongst other things.

I would recommend you see a podiatrist for a complete work up. Chances are they will perform a physical exam, take an x-ray and perform any additional tests necessary. A good resource to find a podiatrist is www.apma.org. There is a "find a podiatrist" section.
