If my dad goes on Medicaid will he lose his VA Medical Benefits

My dad's only income is VA pension & SS. If he goes to long term care facility he will have to apply for Medicaid. We have been told he will lose all of his VA benefits which would include medical. Can he keep the VA Medical but lose the pension? The VA is an important part of his medical care. Medicaid will not cover some of his medical needs.
