I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom has just moved into Holiday Winter Village. It's closest to her family. The facility is excellent. There's a lot of amenities. They have a huge dining hall, a library, a game room, a crafting room, and their own laundry rooms. They have at least six events a day that they can attend. I didn't get to sample their meals, but they get to sit down at tables and order like they're at a restaurant, and they have choices. The staff members were very informative and answered any questions that we had.

My mom has moved into Holiday Winter Village. I'm happy so far. The staff's been very friendly, and they've been helpful with her. They've gone out of their way to do some extra things for her. I haven't tried their food, but from what I've seen, the food is fine. The service has been fine as far as maintenance. My mother seems to enjoy the food. The staff have been great so far. The facilities are nice. It's roomy and convenient. They have offered lots of different activities for the folks there.

There's a lot of staff at Holiday Winter Village. The food looks good, and the place is clean. It looked like the people were active, and things looked like they were flowing smoothly. They have a salon and a chapel.

I visited this facility

We toured Holiday Winter Village. We were very impressed with the facility, the accommodations, and the people. What we're looking for is not just a place to be, but a community that my parents can interact with. We talked to a few of the residents there and just looking around and watching people and seeing how they interact with each other and the demeanor that they had just been there, it seemed like they were all happy or enjoying themselves and enjoying their company, and that's kind of what we're looking at. There are a lot of facilities like the game room and pool table. My parents would go to casinos on occasion and so that's available to them. I think they would have more of an opportunity to interact with people their own age in the facility. They hit all the benchmarks that we were looking for. Proximity to the rest of the family is a big, big part of the decision. The only thing that may have held us back was the cost, because my parents are on a fixed income, but the staff shot me an email and it's looking like it's a doable situation if I understand what she told me. They have forced air, they didn't have an in-room air conditioner thing, so it would be a little bit quieter. We met the salesperson that showed us around, and she was very accommodating, knowledgeable, forthcoming with anything we would ask, and even anticipating things that we might want to ask and filling in information. The staff was informative. One thing I liked was that she had us come in there for lunch, and so we sat there. I know she was busy, and she left to do other things, and I took that as letting us absorb the atmosphere, see the people, let us make our own decision, give us time to take things in, and make our own decisions without any pressure. And I appreciated and enjoyed that as well. We also met some of the servers and some of the personnel around the facility. There was a lady that was having a hard time moving with her walker and one of the staff gave her a hand and helped her. The staff seemed to greet everybody like they knew everybody, and so I appreciated that as well. We had lunch. I had the baked cod and so did my father. And I would compare that to any restaurant I've ever had it at, it was really good. The side dish was good. My mom had the quiche with melon, and she enjoyed that. That was very good. It's as good as any restaurant meal I've ever had.

This facility will be very acceptable for a resident who is ambulatory and independent, and I will say the food is better than most facilities. If, however, a resident is in need of more personal care, I would hesitate. The care staff are home care aides, rather than trained CNA's. Their abilities are limited for patients who need more than just bathing and dressing. The pendants used for calling for help often do not work, and sometimes there is only one care aide for the floor. An RN visits only once per week, which may not be sufficient for very ill patients.. All in all, I would be cautious in placing a resident here who needs a lot of care.

Felt welcomed from the moment we walked in the door. The staff was friendly and accommodating and the food was good. Abby was helpful in giving us a tour of the building and answered all of our questions.

Rooms are spacious and clean, staff is attentive and compassionate towards the residents. Lots of activities scheduled throughout the day and plenty of outings . This building has an out patient physical therapy clinic inside the building, very convenient. The staff I have interacted with are friendly and helpful, it is a big building and you may need directions to get around at first. I have grandkids that have done music events at Winter Village and they were well received. The building is in a great location close to downtown Frankenmuth , Michigan’s number 1 tourist attraction, always something going on year round.

Holiday Winter Village is an older facility but they have lots of activities for which we're still in the process of getting my father-in-law to engage in, but he is starting to. It is a larger apartment complex. He has a full one-bedroom apartment and he was allowed to keep his cat. So, that's a big plus. Not everybody allows that. They have a small grocery store, but they have a bus that would take people to Myer's or Kroger if they want to. They had a concert yesterday at the facility, but they also take them to concerts outside. They have card games, a library, a podiatrist that comes in, a beauty salon, a pool table, and on Sundays, they take you to church if you want to go (but they have church services there as well). The activities director is good. Most of the staff are very good and I think they do a beautiful job with the landscaping and the upkeep of the place. The dining room is seasonally decorated. They have three meals a day that is included. They gave us lunch and the food was very good. They actually allow guests and my father-in-law has taken advantage of that as he likes to have people come in. For the most part, he's happy with the food most of the time. Comparatively, the facilities that we looked at were more expensive, but this one's a fairly good value.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My parents stayed in Independence Village in Frankenmuth (formerly Winter Village) for about two weeks before my dad ended up in the hospital. It's a good place. The staff was very good and very responsible. They would come in twice a day for medications, like they're supposed to, and they keep the doors locked. It just ended up not being a good fit for my dad because he needed a special diet, and they couldn't accommodate that. They had a lot of activities, but my parents were just unable to join in. One of the things they had that not all the places had was a veterans group that would meet. They had a special meeting place for them, and they had photos on the wall in honor of their residents who had been in various wars and conflicts. That was a very nice feature. I know not all places are able to do that, but they did there. They try to keep their facility updated, and they have updated different areas so some of the areas were not completely done yet. Their apartments weren't as big. People need light, and some of their apartments are not well lit, but I think they're trying to change them. The food was OK according to them, but they just could not accommodate my dad. He had a condition where there is only certain food that he could have. They weren't able to take care of it, so we had to have somebody come in to take care of the food for him during the time that he was there. They have been around for years. They constantly have activities going on for the public; that's how my parents actually first found out about them. They would visit friends and participate in their activities.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom was at Winter Village for almost 5 years. It was very nice and very clean, I had nothing negative to say. They had 246 beds so it was a little hard and they went through a management change from 4 or 5 communities that were part of a group and they were sold to Holiday Retirement. It certainly was a very nice place and the staff was very caring. It was an independent place, so it's like an apartment with food service so the residents won't have to cook. My observation when mom moved there was that the residents are all over 55, but it was a younger community because there were a lot of people with cars. But as time went on there were only a few cars and most people became older and no longer able to drive. They had bingo, crafts, happy hours, they had organized activities for the residents. My mother would complain about the food, but my observation is that it's institutional because they had to serve over 200 residents, but they had a pretty good variety of meals and alternatives. Once they were acquired by Holiday Retirement, regardless of the plan that the folks were in before, they moved to a 3-meal a day plan. Like my mother went from a continental breakfast, lunch and a dinner arrangement to a 3-meal a day plan. Their major meal was at lunch since it's good for the seniors not to have a heavy meal at night.

My 91 yr old mother has lives here and she really loves it, she’s never in her because of all the activities that are ongoing during the day and many early evening as well. They always have events that family members are invited to attend. She has a 2 bedroom apt that they clean on a regular schedule so she has no reason to worry about that which frees her up to mingle all day with other residents. They have a great staff to take care of all her needs, and she loves everyone of them.

Employees are courteous and helpful and able to match us to the right service. Maintenance keeps the sidewalks in good shape, especially with snow removal. Food is usually great and good. Heating system works well. Housekeepers do their job well.

I was interested in the one-bedroom, but they showed me a one-bedroom and two-bedroom. The residents looked happy and cheerful.
