Jennifer Serafin, N.P. is a registered nurse and geriatric nurse practitioner at the Jewish Homes for the Aged in San Francisco.

A "walking frame", or walker (as it is more commonly known), is an assistive device designed for people to use if they need support to maintain balance when walking. The basic design looks like a metal frame with 4 legs. There are two handles to hold, and when grasping the walker, the person should have a bend at the elbow. Some of the walkers have wheels attached to the legs to help it move more easily. If you think that you need to have a walker, please ask your health care provider about being evaluated by a physical therapist. They will make sure you get the right size walker for you.
