I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident
My step mother and I are very disappointed in the level of care and the condition of the facilities for when my dad was staying there. His bed was broken, his call light wouldn't work, the light over his bed wouldn't work - finally had to go to reception desk at front office to specifically request maintenance assistance. One day my step mom walked in and my dad had ants crawling on him, another time it was noticed there was black mold growing under the window. When they moved him to a new room several of his personal items went missing, i.e., electric toothbrush, electric razor. Often he was not clean when my step mom came to visit. They never helped him find his teeth when they went missing - I usually found them in a pants pocket in the wash when I picked it up - which meant for days he went without them. He lost over 20 lbs during the several months he was here. We also had questions about the billing but no one would ever contact us back - even after sending a long letter and requesting the courtesy of a reply. We believe the billing is incorrect but paid it because there was a $250 a month late fee for unpaid balance. Horrible experience. BUT the care staff were wonderful, caring people - just understaffed and overworked.

Mom is there reluctantly and says staff there are bullying her. When she refused to do PT, her nurse suggested that Medicare might want her to receive pain management treatment, but a week later it hadn't happened, so I had to call primary care doctor and have referral made and then make appointment myself. When I told nursing manager about the appointment and asked her to plan transport there, she said I would have to accompany my mom, or else they would cancel appointment! The last straw was when we went to appointment, the pain clinic staff took one look at Mom and said she probably had Clostridium dificile, an infection often acquired at nursing homes, and couldn't do pain relieving procedure anyway. Unbelievably, the social worker called to tell me they were discharging Mom from Medicare, and she would have to pay out of pocket. The discharge order called for Brighton Gardens staff to take stool sample, but a day later it still hadn't happened.

I visited this facility
Brighton Gardens was nearer to me, but further from my brother. We weren't happy with the layout of the room and for some reason mom didn't care much for how the rooms were set up. But the facility itself was very homey. We didn't meet much staff when we were there but those that we met were friendly and pleasant. I was very impressed because they seemed to have tremendous activity programs. When you see their schedule, they had a more wide variety than most facilities. They seemed to cater to a lot of different interests of their residents.

I visited this facility
I have inspected quite a few residences in the Southern Kansas city area and this is by far the best of the lot. The lady I worked with, Kelly, was very friendly but more importantly, knew her business extremely well. She understood our problems and work hard to reach a solution for us. The facility was clean, bright and cheerful and the residents seemed happy and without problem. I think we have found our home!

We chose Brighton Gardens of Prairie Village because it is really close to our house and we could see my mom everyday. She has been there since May 24th. The place is okay. It is clean and well-kept. The staff is really nice and very good to my mom on the whole. I love them all. However, I think they have communication issues amongst the staff. Nobody seems to know what is really going on with my mom the shift before and also nobody notices that there is no call light in her room. It has been ripped out and they haven't replaced it yet. It is not a super huge place but at least the nurse in charge should have a better idea of what is going on with the patients. They also need to do some improving in their rehab part of this facility. Once the rehab is over for my mom, nobody over there walk with her. It is part maybe her not feeling good, but when she was feeling better, there was just no extra therapy of any kind from the staff. I just don't see any advancing people and they expect them to do them on their own when they need encouragement. One type of therapy is not enough. My mom has just gotten weaker instead of stronger. They need to make improvement in terms of communication and they could follow through on the rehab part of it.
