I could write pages on my experience at Royal Oaks when my Mom was there during the last 6 weeks of her life and earlier during post surgery rehabilitation. The bottom line is that a nursing home should make a bad situation better. Royal Oaks made everything more difficult. The worst was that they could not even move Mom's roommate out during the day or so that family & friends sat with Mom while she was dying. Mom's breathing was loud & labored. I felt very sorry for Mom's roommate who had to endure all of this. I think to give Mom the dignity of dying in private with family and for the emotional well-being of the roommate, they should have moved one of them. The roommate told me that she had watched several people die already. I will say that there were some good employees who tried to be helpful. Even so, I often visited to find Mom soaked in urine. Mom's clothes disappeared in the laundry and those that she got back did not fit. The list goes on & on & on.

Royal Oaks was very good, but you had to share a room. The two people had to share a bathroom. Their cost was higher too. The place seemed to be nice and clean, and everybody I came in contact with seemed to be friendly. I have seen people in wheelchairs going around by themselves who didn't have problems because they had nice, wide hallways. The drawback is they got to share a room.

Royal Oaks was horrible and smelled really bad. I went there to visit someone and the records weren’t up-to-date, he was transferred to another area two days before. There was no screening and anybody could just walk in there. They didn’t ask me who I was but they just sent me to the room. I wouldn’t send my worst enemy there. It was absolutely atrocious.

My grandmother first went to Royal Oaks for their Rehabilitation care after having her hip replaced. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of her hall and the quality of her care. She was home for a few years before she needed 24-hour care, and we decided based on our experience with the facility that we would place her there. We were very disappointed. She was moved to a hall that smelled, with call lights beeping for hours while the aides chatted with one another at the nurse's station. It was terrible. We would visit her and sit with her while she waited for one of them to help her to the bathroom. Usually, after waiting 30-40 minutes we would have to help her ourselves because no one ever came (even after we nagged them about it). My grandmother has also had skin cancer on her scalp. The nursing home neglected to clean the area after her treatment. Do not let the tours of Royal Oaks fool you.
