Reviews of The Hermitage

I am a friend or relative of a resident
They've taken really good care of my mom at the Hermitage. Her meals and her medication have been handled very well. She can't take a shower when she wants to, and that really bothers her; she only has one shower a week, that is not what she is used to, and she doesn't feel like that it is enough. And the other issue is just that she is in with people with really advanced dementia, and it is really quite hard for her, like she came out of the bathroom one day, and there was a man asleep on her bed. The staff helped to get him up and get him back to where he was supposed to be, but there is another woman that is kind of crazy and borderline violent that pesters my mom to death because she has the misfortune of being near the exit door, and this woman wants my mom to let her out because the staff is trying to kill her -- which they are not, of course. The staff has been very responsive to her, but she is in with people whom she can't have any kind of meaningful relationship with. They certainly make sure that she eats and gets her medication, and she really likes the staff because they work really hard. I think calling it memory care is not really the definition of what that entails. They are really set up for people who are very cognitively impaired in terms of memory, and yes, my mom is a bit forgetful -- or she is a lot forgetful about certain things -- but she knows who she is, where she is, and even why she is there. She just needs a lot more stimulation, and they offered that to people in assisted living. They just don't offer it to people in the memory care; they are not staffed to be able to do that. I think they might want to consider splitting up memory care, and there would be perhaps one neighborhood or one community within the establishment that dealt with the people like Birdie and the others that are kind of just wandering around and muttering to themselves. That they would have one type of care and one area, and then people like my mom who actually would love retain some of their ability to do things like cook and garden -- they are just there so that somebody can make sure that they eat regularly and take their meds on time, but otherwise they have things that they can do beside sit in the room and watch TV.
