I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom was at Sunrise of Arlington. Our experience with them was very good. It worked out really, really well. Nobody stayed in bed all day. Everybody came out to do activities. They would have everybody in the big living room. One time, I actually walked in and they were having a tea party. I saw my mom with a hat and a teacup, and it cracked me up. There was an elevator and every room was wheelchair accessible. She had a private room and it was very nice. It actually had a couple of windows. It was a small room but she had her own bathroom. We loved the staff there. They were all amazing.

Sunrise of Arlington is a very small facility, so my dad can navigate the whole thing very easily. The staff is fantastic. They are very friendly. They're very professional. They knew us and they knew my dad instantly. We were very, very pleased with the staff. The apartment is one room. It has a mini fridge and a bathroom with a shower, but it does not have what I would call a kitchenette. We ate there one time, they made us a bacon cheeseburger and fries, and it was tasty. With my dad, some of the food he has liked, but other things he hasn't liked as much. But they certainly have a nice range of different types of food. If you don't like what the main course is that day, you can order other items or ask for something different, and they're willing to work with you on that. For activities, they have a weekly field trip, and then they have other activities within the facility. One time I was there, a violinist and a flutist came in and they were playing music. I've seen them playing bingo. We're out of town right now, but my son went and visited him, and they were setting up to have a barbecue outside with chairs. They have a pretty landscaped area outside. When it comes to value for money, it's worth it. It's just one building and it's small. This was perfect for my dad and his ability to get around on his own. He doesn't need assistance this way. Any time I call, the concierge at the front desk knows exactly where my dad is. So, we're very happy with it. If they're looking for a small facility that has more intimate care, it's perfect.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My godmother moved into Sunrise of Arlington VA. She is in the highest level of memory care. So far, it has been good, aside from the fact that they quarantined her, which they didn't tell me about when I signed her up. She literally had not been out of her apartment since December. Her caregivers were fully vaccinated, but they still kept her quarantined for fourteen days. I was not happy about that. They've been in constant communication. One day, she was nonresponsive and they were worried, but she has hallucinations. If she is in a full-blown hallucination, she doesn't know that she's not communicating with people. They listened when I told them how intense her hallucinations were. They called hospice, who said that all of her vitals were good, and she had started to respond a little bit. By the next day, she was back to her normal self, which was a big difference from the day before. It looked more like a family setting. The people greeted me, took me all around, and showed me everything. She has a private studio. Because she's a very private person, she would not like sharing. It's a house and it has gardens, and she can go out when somebody will take her out. She's much better outside than she is inside. Aside from that anomaly about the COVID restrictions, I've been very happy with everything else from Sunrise. The staff has been very nice. They keep in contact with me. I live in New Jersey and she's in Arlington, Virginia, so I have to rely on the staff contacting me. She has a good friend who visits her regularly. I get reports from the staff, from the hospice caregivers, and from her friend. All the reports kind of agree, which makes me happy; I know that she's being well cared for. She's as happy as she can be given her state. I believe she's well cared for. I like the staff. She didn't like the food at first, but they've been giving her puréed food. She's been eating that and is now eating better than she was. She's feeding herself, which is good. The only thing I was upset about was the COVID restrictions. She didn't want a vaccine, and they made her get a vaccine. She feels like she has more privacy now, even though she's in a facility. I only get to visit every couple of weeks, but from what I've seen, they tried very hard to come up with a nice menu, and they have adapted it to what she needs. The rooms are good, but her phone hasn't worked since it was put in, so nobody can call her. They can call the front desk, and the front desk will have to bring her to another phone. I've complained several times about it, but it's never been fixed. She doesn't participate in most of the activities, but they have plenty. She watches, but she doesn't participate. They're very expensive, but it's still less than private nursing care.

This is one of the first - if not the first - Sunrise ever built. Therefore, rooms are a bit smaller than newer homes. But this is also a part of the charm in that it is smaller. At 92 mom would get lost in the long corridors of many I have seen. She is a modest woman with whom she relates to many of the simpler amenities. She can walk out of her space and into the thick of things. Staff and Caregivers are very nice and happy. The place is very clean and the food is great. What more can one ask.... Thx

Sunrise of Arlington VA is good, and my mother was attracted to it being a smaller group living situation. The food is really good, and the staff is very helpful and kind. She moved up to the memory care wing and they don't keep them busy there, but when she was downstairs in the regular program, they had a nice array of activities. The rooms are really nice, and she decorated her room herself. You can make an appointment to get your hair and nails done, and they have a doctor and healthcare on-site, a wellness office, and a dentist comes in. There's a nice porch to sit on. The staff is very caring and nice.

My mother stayed at Sunrise of Arlington for respite care. Overall, it was good, and she actually liked it there, but how they price the levels of care was very murky. They weren’t able to communicate that, and that was the negative for me. Her room was good, nothing fancy, but initially she had to share a bathroom with someone. We had to move her to a different room because of her roommate, but other than that it was good, and the people were very caring. They had activities.

Sunrise of Arlington, VA was a nice place but very small. Though it had a homey environment, I would have wanted something bigger with more people. The staff was very nice.

I visited this facility

Sunrise of Arlington is absolutely charming and looks like an old Victorian house. It's wonderful that for those who prefer to walk, you're always visible if you're on the stairs, which is tremendous safety. There are five rooms off of a little sitting room with a sofa, TV and a computer that you can use if you don't have your own. The location is perfect because it's about 10 minutes from my house. My dad likes to walk all the time, and this is a good place for him since it is right in the middle of Arlington. There's a kitchen sink and a place to store food, but there's no source of heat in the individual rooms for safety reasons. There's not a lot of turnaround in staff.

I liked who I met with at Sunrise of Arlington VA, and we had a nice chat. She's very welcoming, and the staff was very friendly. I liked it. The location just wasn't as convenient as we thought it would be, but it's a nice place. They had a TV area, and they had scheduled activities like Bingo and other kinds of activities that they could meet for. They had day trips to places, and they have a whole calendar with a list of events. I believe they had all 3 meals, and they're set up restaurant style. The staff was friendly and approachable. I think they have a doctor who goes there to see them.

Sunrise of Arlington was remote, and I liked one to be in the middle of urban setting. They have a good philosophy about making things interesting and focusing on the development of a person.

I visited this facility

We visited Sunrise of Arlington and really liked the community. It was an older mansion-type setting, but my mother-in-law was from New York City, and we weren’t sure whether that would be a little too old fashioned for her. However, the facility was very nice. It was very clean, and the people were very nice. The rooms were nice, and we really liked it a lot. The saleslady was very helpful and answered all of our questions. The director called us later as well. It was a really nice experience. They had lots of activities, which was nice because my mother-in-law liked to be active, that included music and card games. They had whole boards full of different things that were going on all day. There was very limited parking, but other than that, it seemed like a nice facility, and the people we met seemed to really care and be nice. It was an older community, but it seemed to be kept up well.

Sunrise of Arlington, VA is assisted living. It was very nice, clean, and the food looked like it was good and smelled good. They had a good menu selection. The dining area was very nice, like a restaurant. They had a lot of activities. The staff was friendly. It was a cozy country type bed and breakfast with a nice a little outside porch. The rooms were very nice, like little hotel rooms, and they were clean.

Our visit at Sunrise of Arlington was nice. They had activities like going on trips out in the city, which I thought was nice. I saw the dining area, which was nice but not nicer than the other one I visited. The food was good but not as good as the other one I visited.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Sunrise of Arlington is awesome, and we are very pleased. Some of the nicest people we could have. I had lunch and I talked to the residents, I felt like the residents were pretty happy with it. They are engaged with me, and I appreciated that. The food was certainly as good as any place else that I ate; it was like fish, rice, and vegetables. There’s a wraparound porch, and the residents use it; whenever I’m there, there’s always people out on the porch. It is summer, so they are taking advantage of the outdoors, there’s trees around, and I like that a lot. It’s a small facility, it has a little bit of an intimate feel, and it seems like the people who are there. They are very engaged because when I have been there, there has been quite a few visitors and family members who are visiting there folks; it kind of mixes up the people who are actually at the facility. They take them to movies and out to lunch. The people who are there actually put them together. My father-in-law is Jewish, we asked them if they could do a service, and they said that they could look into that. They are willing to accommodate the interests of the people at the community. It was a little more integrated into a cosmopolitan area. The executive director, marketing director and the head nurse were really smart and caring. They had a very strong policy on bedbugs, and one of the things I learned is that bedbugs are actually very common in the nursing homes and a lot of people don’t know how to deal with it. They trained their people every time they changed the linens, and they bring in dogs usually once a year to sniff the facilities.

The place that I found for my sister is Sunrise of Arlington. The experience so far is very positive. They're home-like. The staff's work attitude is excellent. We chose this facility because it is a small facility, and the environment is like a large home. They have a very good activity program. They also have good health care program. The food is very good. There is a variety of menu. There are three meals per day. They are served in a formal dining room with tables for four residents to sit together. It is very pleasant. Sunrise of Arlington is recommended by a client's relative, and when I looked into it myself, I was positively impressed, and I'm happy with it thus far.

Sunrise of Arlington has a home atmosphere, and the residents were interacting there as we’ve got to observe some of that. It was ideal for the circumstance we had for this particular patient. The staff was caring, and people were going down for lunch.

My husband had respite care at Sunrise of Arlington VA twice. It was a very loving place. It is a beautiful home, not very big and has this wrapped around porch and all of these rocking chairs and all of these activities. It does not feel at all like an institution.
