How do I find someone to come to my father's home and care for him? He has broken both hips, is somewhat mobile, very stubborn and independent.

There are several ways you can find in home help for your dad, someone to do housework, chores, or nursing care. First you can try a home health care agency. See also:

These are basically job placement services that specialize in providing home help for people who are ill or disabled, including seniors. Agencies will match a worker to your situation and usually handle most of the paperwork and supervision. The second way is to hire someone independently, where you interview candidates and handle the paperwork and supervision. Both ways can work well. Hiring through an agency almost always costs more than hiring independently. To find agencies, check on-line or in the telephone directory under "home health care" or "visiting nurses." To find independent workers, ask local senior centers, churches or senior organizations for referrals. Also check local classified ads in a newspaper or on-line. For help finding independent or agency workers, try the local Area Agency on Aging's Eldercare Locator, which links you to local senior services.

If your father needs help with bathing or personal care, and assistance with mobility, you will need to seek out a Class A licensed Home Care Agency (The company I work for, Homewatch Home Care, is in Minnesota so I am informing you of Minnesota regulations). If your father is homebound, Medicare will pay for some assistance, if he is not, they won't. Your best bet for a referral to a Home Care Agency would be to call your local nursing home or hospital and ask to speak with the Social Workers. I hope this helps! If you are in Minnesota, we would be happy to answer any questions you have and get you on the right track - you can call us at 763-546-8899.
