Requires significant supervision

  All Alzheimer's Symptoms

When it happens

Can begin in mild stage; 24/7 supervision needed by moderate-stage dementia

Why it happens

Eventually, changes in memory and other thinking skills make it unsafe for the person with dementia to be alone. He or she may wander away, get lost in public, turn on a stove or appliance and forget it, fall and get hurt, and so on.

What you can do

  • Monitor the situation and know that it can change quickly.

  • Know, too, that there will be "good days" and "bad days," but bad days are a warning sign that more supervision is needed.

  • Look into supplemental help, such as adult daycare or respite; nobody can manage care 24/7 solo.
