As of 2022, the average base cost of a walk-in tub is roughly $2,000 to $5,000. However, that figure doesn’t take any installation costs or luxury upgrades into account. Depending on how many extra costs are involved, the final price of a walk-in tub can reach the low five digits.

Installation Costs

Most customers need professional installation for their new walk-in tubs. These costs can be hard to estimate since they vary depending on the size of the tub, the layout of the bathroom and the existing plumbing connections.

Since walk-in tubs are shaped and sized differently from traditional tubs, installation may require installing larger pipes, raising the bathroom’s ceiling or knocking out a wall  projects that can add $5,000 or more to the final cost. Most installations also require ripping up and replacing large parts of the tiling. Bathroom tiles are priced at roughly $16 per square foot, so costs can climb quickly there as well.

Even if the crew doesn’t need to make any significant additions or changes to a bathroom’s layout, labor costs for a basic installation are usually at least $1,000.

Upgrade Costs

Most walk-in tubs have a wide variety of upgrade options. Popular luxury features include built-in aromatherapy and light therapy that can help create a more relaxing experience, heated seats for comfort while the tub fills and drains and water jets that provide deep-tissue massages to relieve aching muscles. These luxury features can add over $5,000 each. Most of these features need electrical connections, which can further raise installation and labor costs.

Common safety upgrades, which aren’t usually as expensive, can include hand rails and non-slip material on the flooring. The size of the tub is also a significant consideration when estimating total cost. A two-seater tub can add $3,500 to $7,000 to the price.
