Caring for my mom Member since April 21, 2010The photo is of my beautiful mother. I didn't realize till the very end how wise and smart she was without uttering a word. So resilient, determined, elegant, caring and generous with her skills, her cooking, her sewing, her home. So tender with animals. She mastered English albeit with a charming accent, and continued her education while working. Yet she found time to go to dances, play canasta, entertain at home, go on vacations, send money to her relatives in Cuba and we never knew. Silence is indeed Golden. I miss her strong quietude, her funny remarks, my favorite moment in 2009 -I was feeding her one day,she had gone blind, and having decided to take to her bed for safety no doubt-starting losing muscle tone. As I was multi-tasking as usual I said "ok mom open your FACE" I meant your mouth...she laughed and I laughed along with her; another time I told her my blood pressure was up and she said, "well take a cold shower" --ha! so much for the incompetent doctors who tried mightly to convince themselves that she had Alzheimer's which she did not. I would cut off my right arm to stand on that conviction. Before she went dancing to heaven, she told me "I don't have much longer" I did not want to admit that to myself..so I pooh pooh it..but I have this to share with you..if someone says that to you, take them in your arms and say "did you enjoy your stay here, with all the love and understanding you can muster." Mom knew I was caving in under the weight of being in total control and in charge of her life and living. Toll of you that leave ONE family member to do it all, please do not do that.Please.
