I was shown one nice room at Brookdale Shawnee. My husband is going there now for daycare, and they do a good job. They have entertainment that comes in and keep them pretty busy. Someone's watching them all the time. Everything revolves around a center where they eat and have snacks. There are lots of rooms where they have interaction and people who come in to sing. They have an outdoor area and a front porch. Everyone I've seen has been really good.

Brookdale Shawnee was very good. Somebody nice gave us a tour. The room was very nice and big enough for one person. They provided three meals a day and snacks. They had group activities, arts and crafts, activities to help with their memory, and church service on Sunday. They also took the residents on outside activities, like fishing or out to eat.

We visited Brookdale, but they were really too high-priced. It was clean, and the rooms were similar to the others. They have lots of activities, a lot of music, and people from outside who come in and perform. They have a theater room, and they have birds in cages.

My husband is up at Sweet Life at Shawnee. I have a few things I would change if I were in charge. They're supposed to have a doctor come once a week for the patients, but it just hasn't worked out that way. They send an assistant instead. He's been there a month, and I believe the doctor has only been in there once, and the other times the assistant. We put him in there for a time in an emergency situation, and they had one opening, and I kind of had to make a fast decision. But the help is really good and friendly. They're very nice people. I’m not complaining. There are very few men up there. We thought he would have more socialization, but the activities that they have planned are for women, and I can understand that. There’s like five men to twenty women. In fact I learned that with Alzheimer’s, because women outlive men I guess, it’s mostly women that have it. I do think they’re probably one of the best places. They’re very good with security. My husband doesn’t like the food. They’re very clean. I want to bring him home, but I can’t take care of him. I can’t do it right now. I could use a little help myself.

The Sweet Life Shawnee facility is specifically geared toward Alzheimer's and Dementia patients. It is a sister facility to another, larger, Brookdale facility about a mile away. This one has greater security to prevent residents from getting lost or wandering off the property by accident. The location is quiet and peaceful, across a quiet street from a pretty, residential neighbourhood, but only a couple of blocks from a bustling suburb with lots of shopping and dining options. The layout of the facility is arranged in three "neighbourhoods" around several common areas, and each neighbourhood has a fenced, open-access garden area. The common areas are split into two large spaces, with a number of smaller "life skill stations" such as a gardening bench and a jewellery boutique. Residents are encouraged to participate in a full schedule of social activities from 10 am to 6:30 pm. When I was there, I saw a group of about 8 residents taking an exercise class. They were all smiling and several even shouted "woohoo" after finishing sets. Bedrooms are a good size, and are bright, with large windows and wood blinds. Residents are encouraged to bring their own furniture and decorations, so for those who have not decorated, furnishings are sparse. I saw two groups of residents working with a staff member: both were smiling and seemed attentive, and my guide knew the names of all the residents we met. This is an intimate facility with a feeling of personal caring, and I would recommend this facility to a loved one.
