I visited this facility

Benton House of Port Orange was lovely. The people were outstanding. The facility was beautiful. They have extra amenities such as a beauty salon, but that's all I remember. I was not involved in any of their activities, but they had a calendar of all kinds of activities. It was nice. I would say it was exceptional, but there were places that needed updating. The staff were great, and they interacted with the residents. The only reason why we didn't go there was because it was farther away and the rooms were not large.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father is a biochemist, he's 75 and worked for the last 40-something years, and then had a stroke. It was not pretty, no one would take him, and they were giving us the runaround. Benton House of Port Orange stepped up with less than 24-hour notice, got him out of the hospital where he was, did an assessment, and welcomed him with open arms. They have been diligently paying attention to every need that he has. This was a man who wouldn't do anything and now is talking about permanently staying there because he likes it that much. He loves it. They have activities, they are engaged with their staff, and they truly care about the patients. It's not a revolving door for them, they really want to help people, which they should. It's very clean. They pay attention to everyone who comes and who comes out. I feel safe that my father is there. I love it there. I don't even know the right words to say to give the staff the credit that is due. They're wonderful, they are attentive to the residents, and don't sit around on their cell phones. You call and they answer, they do their jobs. My father is improving every day and they communicate with us. They ask us questions just like we ask them questions. They're full of life and spirit. They know everyone by name everywhere they walk. Everyone who lives there knows their names and the staff knows their name without hesitation. His room is perfect. He is in what they call a respite room right now because initially he did not want to go, and he wanted to go home. The medical staff at the hospital had to explain to him the care that he needed. They had respite rooms fully furnished and with toiletries. They had us come to the facility before my dad got there, inspect the room to make sure everything that he would need to be comfortable and secure was there and if it wasn't, they had no problem getting it and putting it there so that we were comfortable and dad was comfortable. The rooms are very clean, very spacious, homey, and wonderful. He is in the assisted living section. It's a somewhat newer place, I think that they've been open for 4 years going into their 5th year. Everything is pristine, intact, and wonderful. I have not eaten anything there. I did see one time I was there; he had his lunch and it was a burger, fries, and a salad. He ate everything. It's not frozen dinners. They manually cook everything and they have food available to the patients there all the time. It's not just a vending machine-style, it's actual, real stuff and it's very good. I was wondering if my dad and I could change places. I have absolutely nothing but wonderful things to say. Any concerns that we have had, they jump right on it. My dad was going through not drinking enough and becoming dehydrated while he was at the hospital so we mentioned this to them. We stocked his room and his fridge with things for him to drink and noticed that he was not drinking them. He was becoming a little bit more dazed and confused. We spoke with the staff and the very next day when we went up, I said, "So how's the drinking going with your fluids?". He laughed and said, "Oh, okay, yeah, Caroline's all over me all the time now. Thank you." That was less than 24 hours from the time we mentioned that to her and she addressed it with my dad the entire day. He was more alert when we got there that night. They didn't let anything pass and jumped right on that. They are a little bit pricier than some of the other facilities that we looked at, however, it's the amenities that are provided. For example, if we went to another community that's a more independent living, with minimal medical care. It's just basically a facility where people can take care of themselves, but then they have companionship. At Benton House, they have a full medical staff 24-hours a day, 7 days a week so that's going to cost a little bit more. It's worth every dime though. They do daily activities and they print out an activity sheet so that each resident has that. They also put it in plain view. They do word games; they have entertainment by high school students that come in. They are pet friendly too, and it's all about patient care. They take them on bus rides and they assess their needs. They all have different activities for groups who need certain types of care and then encourage them to come and participate. They don't let them hibernate, they get them out and make them feel welcome. My father is a complete introvert, he's a biochemist, so obviously, he is. Now, he loves it and I couldn't believe how he's interacting with everyone.

I visited this facility

There were a couple of things that I really appreciated about Benton House of Port Orange. One was their attention to detail with regards to my father's personal care. They have an ambassador program, which I think is exemplary. It helps the newest residents get acclimated with the rest of the community. The rooms were also spacious and clean. From the looks of their menu and from the food that I saw, it looks pretty, pretty tasty. Leanne was my community person, and she was remarkable. She listened to my requests and needs for my father. The dining area was beautiful. Upkeep was gorgeous. It's only four years old. It's very well-kept, and it looks brand new, like a plush hotel. They have a beautiful garden, a patio area, and a therapy place that they can take residents to work with them.

Benton House of Port Orange is wonderful. The staff is extremely caring, genuine, and very calm. The facility is brand new, so my brother's room is airy, bright, and easily accessible for him. He is very particular with the food, and he enjoys it very much. It seemed to be a very decent quality. They have tons of activities, and they take the memory care residents on outings.
