I visited this facility

I liked The Rivers at Puyallup. There was a positive vibe in the building. The room was light and airy. I looked at a one-bedroom. There was not much storage space at all, which concerns me, and the bathroom was just a little room with a toilet in the shower, and then you have the sink outside, kind of like in hotels. I liked the list of their activities. It sounded like a fun place. They had all kinds of different games, some off-site meals, and a lot of movies. So, it seemed like a place I would like to be because of the activities. They had religious services, too.

I visited this facility

The Rivers at Puyallup has independent and assisted living. The tour was good. We ate there and the food was good. I probably could have moved in there too, but she said if somebody has to have their pills distributed by the staff it is an additional $500 a month. She told my daughter that there are some people living there that are paying an additional $2,000 to $3,000 plus their rent because they have so much being done for them, but that's mostly in the assisted living part. Nevertheless, it's what kept me away from there. The place is modern looking and the staff is good. The food is very good, too. The inside of the place was modern and clean, but the outside probably could use a few touches up here and there. The grounds are all kept up well. They have a salon and a barbershop. It is homey and good. It is just the money that keeps me away from there.

I visited this facility

I visited Brookdale. It was older, but it was near a tourist area, with neat little stores and coffee shops. They have washer and dryer outside in the hallways. The stores around it are convenient. They have a common room turned into a Bingo room, and a room for church activities.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father-in-law was at Brookdale Puyallup for about ten days before he passed away. It was an alright facility. I never really went down there when he was there, but they were nice when I was there when they walked me through the facility. I was a little irritated that we had to put down a $2,000 community fee that was non-refundable and they didn't give me back my $2,000 even though he was only there for ten days. I didn't taste the food, but the dining area was very nice. I saw the menu and it looked decent. My husband and I didn't believe that he should've been evaluated and then OKed to go into an assisted living home. We thought he should've gone into the one above that. It was a little expensive.

My father-in-law has been at Brookdale Puyallup for two years. They have very professional, attentive staff. They have done some upgrades to the apartments. My father-in-law just moved out of one into another, and it's amazing. The fine dining room is well kept. The place itself is nice. My father-in-law was part of a quartet all of his life, so now he gets to sing there. He likes reading. There are a lot of activities that they do.

Brookdale Puyallup is close to me; mom is familiar with the city. I think cleanliness was below standards, and not as good as normal. It was just an apartment with a small kitchen. The dining area was too dark inside.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I got my parents to stay at Emeritus at Puyallup for a month, and then they wanted to go home. I think it was very nice, I loved the place, and they were very nice; it was my parents. It’s not the nearest place, and they could have done some upgrades in their apartments. Their help there was just awesome, and she did everything possible trying to make my parents comfortable above and beyond; my parents were just stubborn. The people there, the nurse, everybody there was very good. I just checked it out for the quality; it’s very clean, and what I like best is the staff.

Emeritus has a good staff and the people seem happy. The rooms are average. Security is pretty good, you have to sign in, and you can’t just walk around. We tried the food and it was good.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mom is in Emeritus at Puyallup. We chose it because of its location, and it seems like it fits all of my mother's needs as far as memory care, as well as physical care. I like it for a combination of reasons. I think the facility is well taken care of and seems to have a nice environment. It has a very good staff that is hardworking. They know the members of their community well. They all seem caring and seem to work together for the care of their people. From the top, who is Kimberly, she is welcoming and willing to give us a lot of information, to the bottom, who are the caregivers, they all seem to work together to make my mom feel welcome. They helped us through some rough times because of the transition from where she was to where she is now. The room that my mother is in is working out just fine. The dining room is beautiful. I like the way that people can eat from seven in the morning until seven in the evening without having a specific time.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I'm happy here in Emeritus. It used to be a Merrill Gardens. The facility is one big building. I like everything about it. Their service is good. The caregivers are on the ball. Just whatever questions we have, they answer them right away. Their mess hall is also good. The unit I have is spacious enough for me. I'm living all by myself. I got a living room and a bedroom. We also have a lot of activities. We play bingo twice a week and chair volleyball once a week. We also do Mexican train dominoes, pinochle, etc. There's always something going on somewhere.

Merrill Gardens was quiet and clean. The rooms were adequate. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, answered every question we had and very accommodating in showing us around.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My grandfather despite being a surly old man was beloved by all the staff in the assisted living facility where he spent the last years of his life. The lead nurse would always refer to him by name and tell my mother and I what he had eaten, how he was doing, any problems that had arose since our last visit and more. The staff in general seemed to care about increasing the quality of life for their residents and were excellent at their jobs. There was also opportunities for physical therapy on premises and the physical therapy staff were just as friendly and professional with grandpa as his nurses were.

I visited this facility

About a month ago, my fianc̩e and I visited my grandmother at her new home in Merrill Gardens in Puyallup, Washington. I was blown away at the quality of life this facility offers its residents. The staff warmly welcomed us and seemed thrilled at the thought of family participation at the facility. We visited around lunchtime and were amazed at the wide selection of food. There was a full salad bar with fresh fruits and vegetables, a restaurant-style menu for entr̩es, and variety of different ice creams for dessert. At around 10 dollars per person, I feel that the meal was quite affordable. Another thing that surprised me about the experience is the calendar of events for the residents. Many participate in a weekly Wii Bowling game, and some even have played in a Wii Bowling tournament in Seattle. My grandmother also pointed out that there are beginning Spanish classes, card games, exercise classes, and many other activities that enable residents to maintain an active social life. The final item of note is that all residents and visitors have to check in and out of the complex as they come and go. This gave me peace of mind as my grandmother gets confused easily, and having her check in and out helps the staff keep tabs on her. All in all, I'm very content that my grandmother is in this positive living environment.
