I am a friend or relative of resident

My mother has been a resident of Shawnee Gardens for nine years. She will be celebrating her 101st birthday there this month. Mom feels that Shawnee Gardens is her home and that the staff, especially the owner, is her family. She has been nurtured physically and emotionally by the staff and the life that is provided at Shawnee Gardens. The food is wholesome and delicious--I have eaten many meals there with the residents--the surroundings are cozy and light-filled and the care is given with understanding and love. Mom's family is grateful to Shawnee Gardens for providing such a loving home.

I ran an adult day program near Shawnee Gardens for about 10 years—and some of the people who came lived at Shawnee. I also got to know the owner who seems quite good and involved.

They have an interesting premise: It's a community of people who are interested in being an active part of the place—engaged in gardening, food preparation, interacting with the wider community. And it seems to work pretty well.

The facility itself is an older house—maybe 20-30 years old—in a nice, well-established neighborhood in Boulder. The room size varies. And there's a warm-water, endless pool, for those who want to swim. The whole thing is small, which makes it a good fit for those who want a family feel. But it could feel a little uncomfortable for those who don't have a lot in common with the other residents.

The staff is very attentive and creative. They work hard to engage the residents and to cater to their needs. The daily activities are very much geared to what the residents would be doing in their own homes.

It's best for those who are looking for independent living or assisted living. They offer some memory care for those who have mild cognitive impairment or early stage dementia. But it's not a good fit for those with more advanced cognitive problems.
