I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Please do not have your loved one stay at The Village Senior Living. And if you have your loved one at this facility, please pay special attention to their care. From 07/28/2023 to 08/29/2023, my mother stayed at The Village Senior Living at 4707 S. Orchard St., Tacoma 98466. While there, the care she received was negligent, meaning she did not receive the proper care and attention per discussed with M and associate on June 26, 2023, at my home with me. My mom was not showered or assisted with showering. Oral care was not given or assisted with. I have pictures that have dates. The bedding was not cleaned even when I requested it done because of stains. I was told by the “sales rep,” to bring my mom’s medicine in a Monday-Sunday container. The reason was that my mom would only be there for a month (respite care). I also included a recent hospital medication list to be with the container, which was kept in her kitchen at the village. After three weeks of her being there, on August 21st, I was told by M, “We don’t do it like this. Who told you to do this with the medication?” I was never contacted once about how I brought the medication. This caused missed medication and MISSING medication. She was not showered for almost three weeks. Medication went missing. MAR report shows a discrepancy. I had one printed out earlier after missing medication. When I asked for all of my mom's paperwork, I noticed the second MAR was different from the one I had. Teeth weren't taken care of. Jewelry went missing. It took them a week to clean the toilet after telling them there was a poop blowout. Her clothes weren't changed daily. She had the same clothes on for up to three days. The one shower they said they gave her, they hung the towel over the shower rod to dry. Is it standard practice to reuse the towels without washing them? I would think not. I had to give her showers because they did not after filing numerous complaints. After speaking with one of the workers, she could not believe what she saw happen with my mom. She decided to put her two weeks in because she didn't like what she was seeing. Her boss told her to please stay, so she did. This person texted me to inform me she has filed a complaint with the State. *I showed up a few times after hours and couldn't get anyone to open up the front door after using the afterhours cord. One night the fire department was outside waiting for someone to open the door after minutes of waiting. Finally, after waiting crucial minutes, one of the firemen pulled on the left door and it opened. Once inside, staff were confused of who called 911. *A few times, the doors weren't even locked after hours. A female staff member told me it gets stuck unlocked and has to be shimmied to lock it. *Many times, my friends and other family members walked right in without signing in. No one at the front desk. * My friends came to visit my mom, and they found her wandering the hall LOST. I had to pull my mom out two days earlier because of the lack of care and trust. I would have done it earlier but could not because of a medical procedure. I asked the Director for a partial refund after they realized their negligence. She offered me free drop-off care during their activities. What an insult. Of course, I declined. My mother did not receive the $7,000 care that was guaranteed to her. I'm under the impression that a case has been open for my mother. I've sent two message to their headquarters and have not received a call or email back. Don't be fooled with the nice remodel. Please investigate your loved ones stay. Check the MAR reports, shower log, are their clothes being changed, don't have any jewelry there that you don't want stolen, etc.. One plus is the activities director. She is a lovely young lady. She made sure my mom was involved with activities.

I like all the amenities that they have that are taken care of by the community fund. I like that after two years Medicaid can start. They have a one-bedroom and a studio. They are nice rooms. They supply appliances, except for a stove. You have to pay for your microwave. The staff member was extremely knowledgeable. He knew some of the residents there and would stop and talk to them sometimes, or give them a hug. He was very involved with everyone. They serve brunch and dinner.

Provider Response

Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how we did. We hope you have a great day!

I visited my late friend at the village often for just over a year. The staff were always attentive to his needs. They kept him active and involved despite him being antisocial. He was mad to be put in a senior home at first but grew to enjoy the social gathering and activities. They made him very comfortable during his treatments. The director has been in the industry for almost 20 year I believe. The building was getting a full remodel and I'm sure they must be done soon. I am only a few years away from considering a senior community and I will be calling them when my ego takes a few more falls.

We're going to move to The Village Senior Living. Judy, the staff who gave us the tour was very knowledgeable, very nice, very caring, and answered all the questions that we had. She just made us feel confident in our choice. The facility is beautiful. They're in the process of remodeling, and the new finishes are beautiful. There's a small patio that's accessible to the residents, as well as an open area inside where they can get together and meet.

My sister-in-law is at The Village Senior Living. It's very nice-looking. They're undergoing a total remodel inside and out. It's very clean and it's all wood paneled floor. They seem to have a staff that has worked there a long time, and they take pride in their facility. They're responsive, kind, and available. They have a lot of variety in their meals. They allow their residents to order off the menu any time (day or night), and even have it delivered to their room. It's truly like a hotel. They run it very well. She is in a studio, which is very nicely laid out and clean. I think it's newly painted, too. They don't have a stove in there, but they have a microwave. They allow them to have toasters if they want. They have a nice refrigerator, a lot of closet space, good natural lighting, and big windows. They also have a craft room. They have jigsaw puzzles laid out in the hallway area near the elevators, so anybody can freely do it. There was a cute little store that 's run by the residents, where they donate things and attach a nominal price to it, and so the residents and staff can shop there with really nice things, like beautiful tea set cups for 50 cents, albums, stationery, or all kinds of things. They do a gym day once a week. They have washer and dryer available and a spa (where they can come and get their nails done and a hairdresser that comes in). They have nice little shuttle buses to take them once a week to shopping, or they can reserve it and tell them where they want to go a specific place and they will take them there. The dining area is clean and orderly. They are taking really good care of the residents by only allowing two of them to sit together at a table during this COVID era, which lets them get to know each other better. My sister-in-law tells me that the wait people are just really sweet. Of all the comparisons I made, this one is probably one of the best values. It's close to where I live too, and it doesn't feel like you're living in an institution. It seems like a nice apartment building, like a hotel with hotel services; that's what it reminds me of.

We have chosen The Village Senior Living for my mother. I like the fact that it's a smaller unit. She has a bad hip, and she can walk; but everything is close together, so she doesn't have to walk a long way to go to the courtyard or go to the common areas. I like that they had private rooms. Mostly all the places I toured now, they have shared rooms; I don't like that. I like the staff. They're interactive, and you can tell they care a lot about the residents that live there. There's not a bunch of extra upcharges there. They have activities. They have their dining room, the common area, and a room to watch TV. I like it.

I am so happy to live at The Village Senior Living. It is 100% better than my last community I lived at. I appreciate the warm, fresh, tasty, home cooked meals that are made daily. They keep up our building and there is always hot water when I shower. They staff is always friendly and helpful. Thank you to everyone that helps keep our place running.

My friend’s room was very big and clean. They staff was always friendly and helpful. We were worried about her health at home but she was well taken care of at The Village. Staff was always available, checking in on her and everyone new her name. She had made a new best friend and liked to do the craft contests.

The Village Senior Living was fairly outdated, but they're doing renovations. It needed some work, and the layout right now is not the most accessible and inviting. The seniors didn't look as kept and as happy as all the other places, which might be because they're renovating, and the staff might have been down a little bit that day. The person during the tour was nice, friendly, and very informative. The food looked okay, and it was open bar day, so most of the residents were participating with that. They had an exercise room, a craft area, a reading area, and a TV area. The lady was very apologetic about the condition of things at the time.

When my Aunt first moved into facility, they did a nice job. However, facility has gone down hill over the last few years. Medications are not brought to patients consistently-resulting in 2 hospitalizations for high blood pressure in last 2 weeks. Baths are not given on the schedule, often Aunt doesn't get bath at all for more than a week. Kitchen has run out of food. Emergency bell does not get answered.

I liked the Village, including the rooms, and the plan for my father-in-law's care. I liked the pricing, because it's one price for moving in and an additional amount for everything, depending on your additional needs. I liked the location, it's close to us so we could visit him, or he could come home and go back anytime. They have different sizes of rooms available. We could also take him there for a day or two, if we need a break, or if he needs to get adjusted to the place. That was the best part, and I think that's a great plan.

I like The Village Senior Living, but it was inappropriate for my friend. I loved it though. If she could have gone there -- if she had been able to walk and just needed assisted living, not full time nursing -- that’s where I would have loved to have her go. When I sell my house, I’m very seriously considering going there. I really like it. I saw 2 different studios and a 1-bedroom. I thought that the planning of it was well thought out. The main dining room was on one floor; it was accessible with the elevator. If you couldn’t walk very far, they have a separate smaller dining room area on another floor. I was extremely impressed with The Village. The staff was extremely professional, very pleasant, and truly seemed to enjoy her work, which I think is always a plus. All the people had smiles on their faces.

I decided to move into The Village. I liked the layout and the people working here. It was inexpensive compared to some of the others I saw which were prohibitive. They have all kinds of activities going on all the time. I met the person in charge of the activities committee, and I signed up to teach some things. I like to teach crafts and sew, and I've met people who do both here. I'll be able to volunteer and do some good in the community. The food is wonderful. They give you too much -- which is my only complaint -- but the variety and the way it's prepared is just great. The people who work here were so nice to me when I came, and everybody went out of their way to make you feel welcome, so it's great. Here, you have enough room for walkers and still get around wherever you need to go.

I visited The Village and it's a much smaller facility. It has different levels of care and the fourth floor was the retirement place which right now, if I was interested, that would be it. It seemed nice, but it just didn't seem like a place I would be comfortable with. The food was very good. I just had a sandwich. Everything seemed good, the servers were very helpful and they checked right away if you needed anything else. They had in-room meals, if you needed it. They also have different dining rooms which you could choose from. There weren't designated seating, it was open seating.

I wasn't impressed with The Village. The location is kind of difficult to get into, and the area is not that good. The building is kind of old. I ate there. Compared to the others, I think I'll give them a 4 for food. The staff is average but nice.

The Village Senior Living is a very favorable, nice facility. My relative really loves it there. The place is very clean and very well kept, and I am very well pleased with it. The staff are very courteous, very professional, very friendly, and outgoing. The other residents are very friendly, too. The meals are very well-prepared. They have a very nice dining area, and sometimes there's music in it. It has individualized table service with waiters who come and take the orders.

The staff was very friendly at The Village Senior Living. I went to their Mother's Day brunch. After the brunch, they took us on a tour of the facility. They were informative and friendly. We looked at a one-bedroom and a studio. They were clean and adequate. It is an older building, but it looks like a nice facility. The residents looked happy.

The Village was recommended to me so I toured this facility plus 4 others in the county. Of all the facilities that were shown to me, The Village’s Community Relations Director Kayla, was the most efficient yet compassionate; knowledgeable and genuine. She explained everything clearly and pleasantly plus gave a step by step process for the family in order to go forward with the multi-faceted process of a move for my mom. I felt comfortable and grateful to speak to someone of her care giving experience. Other professionals that I spoke to seemed more interested in getting our money rather than focusing on the care needs of a dementia patient. The rest of The Village staff were just as welcoming and seemed very happy at their jobs. In other facilities, some of the workers acted like they felt that they were overworked and underpaid. Kayla has excellent communication skills to help you navigate the difficult decisions involved with finding a facility for an aging parent. I will definitely look at The Village again, when it comes time for my husband and I to find an assisted living facility.

The Village Senior Living was a nice facility. The people there were dynamite. The staff working at this place from the maintenance all the way up to the top was great. We have no problem with them. As a whole, it wasn't bad but it just didn't fit my parent.
