About The Open Door Adult Family Home
Our mission statement says it all - Live Well! Our focus at The Open Door is to ensure your loved one is comfortable, very well cared for, and functioning at the highest levels possible given each unique individual's situation. Beyond these core foundations of caregiving, everything we do is designed to make this next chapter in their lives as rich and fulfilling as it can and should be.
We cater to the needs of each individual, and you will rest comfortably knowing your loved one is in our care.
WHY THE OPEN DOOR?
Simply stated, we offer 24-hour personal care for your loved one in a home setting. We have a unique caregiving model at The Open Door, with two experienced and nurturing women who work together as a team. With one of our primary caregivers always present and ready to help, residents are comforted by having a familiar face around them at all times, versus new caregivers swapping in-and-out every 8 or 12 hours. This consistency also enables us to observe and identify any subtle changes to your loved one's health or well-being, no matter how small, so that we can address the issues immediately.
Our primary caregivers are supported by Frank Skwara, a Registered Nurse of over 30 years who specializes in geriatric care, along with daily caregivers that come in to support our primary caregivers with meal preparation, bathing, activities and other duties during the day. We believe this team-oriented approach to caregiving provides residents with the best environment to keep them secure, healthy and happy.
We like to describe The Open Door as a place where you'd want your mom to live (we actually built The Open Door for our mom, and we're very proud of it!).
The Open Door is a beautiful, 4,600 square foot home resting on almost half an acre on High Drive on Spokane's South Hill. We have six spacious, private bedrooms, all on the main floor, that offer each of our residents the quiet and sanctity of their own personal space, along with several common rooms for spending time with other residents, family members and friends, and our caregivers.
For elderly adults, having to move into long-term care can be a difficult change. Some may have trouble dealing with the sudden lack of privacy, the inability to choose something as simple as what TV program they can watch due to a roommate situation, or the lack of space to host a family member for a meal or to spend some quiet time together. These perceived indignities can plunge some seniors into a depression after moving from their homes into their assisted living situation.
At The Open Door, we believe privacy and personal space are paramount to every individual. We're pleased that we can offer each resident their own spacious, private bedroom. Telephone conversations, TV watching and catching up on the grandkids via Facebook can all be conducted in the privacy of their own warm and spacious room. We offer fully furnished rooms, and we encourage you to bring whatever furniture and amenities to make the room their own.
In addition, we have several common areas, including a living room for quiet conversations, visits, games, reading and our music therapy sessions, and a casual den for sharing a favorite movie or watching the big game with friends.
HEALTH AND WELL-BEING ARE OUR TOP PRIORITY
Taking care of our Residents is our top priority, and our caregivers are available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. We serve three nutritious, home-cooked meals each day along with healthy snacks in-between. We love to bake cookies and muffins, and our apple pie recipe comes directly from Audrey's Grandma. We welcome help in the kitchen from residents who love to cook too, so bring your recipes with you if it's something you enjoy!
Laundry, bed-making, and cleaning are all taken care of by The Open Door staff. We encourage residents to live as independently as possible, but for those who need assistance, we offer medication assistance, transportation to doctor's appointments, personal grooming, bathing, dressing and bathroom assistance. Each resident has their own personal call system to ask a caregiver to come to their room to help, day or night.
KEEPING THE FAMILY TOGETHER
We invite family members to visit as often as possible (our door is always open!), and we have a lovely sitting room designed to give each family the space and privacy to spend quality time with their loved ones -- drinking tea, playing cards, or just catching up. Each Sunday is set aside for our family pot luck, and everyone is invited. We cook a delicious main course and family members bring a simple side dish or dessert, and together we enjoy a feast and a celebration of life.
At The Open Door we believe that music is more than just a feel-good medium -- it is an opportunity to help each individual improve his or her physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Studies continue to demonstrate the unique power of music to soothe and center individuals, and has been shown to assist cancer patients in resolving emotional or psychological issues.
The music therapy we provide do at The Open Door is designed to improve comfort and to enhance understanding of emotional or psychological issues associated with nearing the end of life. On top of that, there is the pure enjoyment of listening to good music. We like to do that together, and encourage all Residents to take part.
