I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mother is in Regency Care Center now. She needs nursing care 24/7, and they take good care of her. The building itself, I will say is an older unit, but other than that, it is clean and it think it is really great. They have an open dining room, exercise facility, and they do rehabilitation. They have a choice to eat in the dining room or, like my mother, who is basically bedridden, to eat in their rooms.

Oh where to start... first of all my family trusted this place to care for my wonderful Grandmother whom was recovering from a stroke. She had severe leg pain that was very difficult to manage. She was moved from the hospital to this facility. Every time we went to see her she was very distraught, she would say they just left her in there. She was in so much pain and we would have to immediately call the nurse in and ask when her last pain meds were given, they didn't know... they had to check. They didn't have a very good way of keeping track of this. She was moved to the hospital on one occasion because of a fever, she was battling with pneumonia as she couldn't swallow. Then she got better and was returned to Regency. I am so thankful that so much of our family spent so much time there with her, making sure she was getting cleaned up and given meds when she needed them otherwise I am sad to say she would have endured a lot more suffering than she was already going through. On her last day there, she began to have chest pains, the nurse offered her a Tylenol. Then we waited for over 30 minutes after we requested she be taken by ambulance to the hospital, something wasn't right. It took a long time to get them to call an ambulance, when the medics got there they loaded her up to be taken. What we saw next was appalling, her bed was soaked in urine. How long had she been sitting in a urine soaked depends? We had been there for several hours and no one came in to make sure she was clean. Her bed was soaked in urine, I took pictures... I was disgusted! After my Grandmother was taken out of the room, my husband and I called the nurse in to explain why that was acceptable to leave a person who is incapable of telling you what they needed, to leave them soaking in their own urine. The nurse immediately teared up and she said she is aware there isn't enough attention being given to the residents. I do understand that it isn't the nurses fault as they don't set the limit for how many patients to staff ratio. They are paid so much money for "skilled nursing" I would call it "skilled soaking" if I were to name it. My Grandmother never returned to Regency, she was taken to Providence Hospital where she eventually died. She was finally receiving the care she deserved, at Providence. She spent 6 weeks total trying to recover from her stroke, my family is struggling with guilt as to whether she would have recovered better being at a facility where the main purpose isn't to get rich off of these sick, old people. I fear for those who are still in their care, as I know they are merely surviving when they should be in a place where they receive the care to thrive. I miss my Grandmother terribly, I am privileged that I was able to stick up for her and have her removed from such a disturbing place. Please people, do your research instead of trusting someone because they have "qualified" personnel.

In my experience from visiting my mother at Regency Care Center I was slightly surprised at how well the center was run. Every faculty member was always at work. All of the elderly patients were getting the needed attention and time. The place was well kept up and in great shape. Even all of the landscaping was incredibly kept in amazing fresh shape. As soon as I walked in I got a warm fuzzy feeling from the inside environment of people and furniture. They had an entire wing just built for visitors which is where I spent most of my time. The food their was better than expected. I wouldn't want it every night but that's why they have their own transportation buses that take the elderly out into town for shopping and food. They have a peaceful park built just out back of the facility where people can step out to get a nice breathe of fresh air or a short walk in the sun. Overall I really approve of this care center and I was glad to have such a nice place to stay at and visit my Mother.
