I visited this facility

Spring Arbor of Richmond was neat and clean. The staff was all extremely nice. I didn't get to see any activities, but I was told and showed the activity calendar and the menus. They have so many different things they can choose from. The room was really nice. You could set it up to make it feel more like a home for your loved one. There was a new staff member with housekeeping coming on and she stopped and Mat, who was showing me around, introduced me to her and she said she was glad to meet me and she hoped that we would choose there for Mom. They were really friendly and really trying to make you feel like you were choosing the right place. They had a little courtyard and a beauty salon. They were telling me and showing me so many things, making sure I know everything and what they could help with.

I visited this facility

I toured Spring Arbor of Richmond. Out of all of them that I visited, that would probably get my attention more so than the others. I would give that one the highest rating. My interaction with the staff was very positive. They were very helpful. I like the fact that they were calling the residents by name, which told me that they knew the residents and there must have been some kind of interaction for them to know and be able to call them by name. The room was clean. It had a refrigerator and a microwave. I like the fact that they had a door in the closet, though it wasn't a big closet. I like the fact that it has a window so you can see outside. I liked the layout of it. Also, the room was not too far from the dining room, so if my mom was down the hall, she could come up to the dining room for her meals. I liked that because some of the others were kind of far and you had to maneuver to get to the dining room. The dining room was more like a restaurant. The grounds were very nice. I didn't have any parking problems. Nothing stood out for me to have a concern. I was trying to get my mom there, but the doctor recommended that she get stronger, so I decided to hold off on that.

I visited this facility

We went to the Spring Arbor of Richmond. I think the area that my father would be in is way too small. The rooms were OK. They weren't anywhere close to the other facilities. The residents there were way beyond where my father was at. There were a lot of them in wheelchairs. The director was wonderful, but it seemed like she kept having to give instructions to staff when we were there. I would give her five stars without fail. When you walk into the front of the building it is just as pretty as it can be, the setup, the library, and stuff. It's just once you go into that memory care part of it and it's different, it just is different. I think the rooms need to be updated, and the tenants there were not in a position to be up. When you walk into a room, it's just an empty room, a closet, and a bathroom.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

We had a couple of ladies from my church whom I would go visit at Spring Arbor of Richmond. I also visited it for my friend who needed a place. They were very nice, and we had to think about finances for her. I think, from an overall view, that this was our best choice for her sake. They had everything you'd need. It was very clean, and the people were very nice, but it was a bigger place. My friend who's looking needs a smaller place. The ladies at my church who stayed there started in assisted living, and eventually one went to memory care. We went there to see her many times. So, when another friend was looking for a place, that's the first place we went because we knew of the place already. The staff was very nice and very attentive, they answered all our questions, and they seemed to have a lot of personalities. I was there the few times my friend was eating, and the food looked beautiful. She also loved the food. It was very appealing and looked very nice.

I had a physical tour at Spring Arbor of Richmond. The experience was good. They gave me information on the rooms, the meals, the medications provided for the residents there, the cost, and the entertainment for the residents. They gave me pretty much everything. The room was spacious. The dining room looked like a restaurant. It wasn't like a high-scale restaurant. It had nice tables with tablecloths. The tables were separated far apart from each other. It was clean and nice. It wasn't like a cafeteria.

Spring Arbor of Richmond was very nice. I really liked it, and the staff was wonderful. There were some things that bothered my sister, like when we were sitting there talking with the director, a staff member came in, and we all said hello and smiled but the staff member didn't look and walked straight by us. My sister thought that was unfriendly and took that really seriously. They have a big, nice art room for the memory care residents. They do a lot of activities. The rooms were a little on the small side, and the closets were so small. They should also be alerted to smile and say "good morning" even if they had a terrible morning. The place was very clean and beautiful.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I think we made a good decision in choosing Spring Arbor of Richmond. The staff here is very pleasant and helpful. The place is beautiful and the accommodations are pretty good. The food is OK. This place is the same as others. They have a hard time keeping help because they don't pay enough. We primarily chose this community because the medical care is great. We wanted something small and more casual, and this fits the bill. The rooms have different arrangements and sizes.

Spring Arbor of Richmond is a little more expensive than most facilities. They have a lot of things and activities. I only met one person there and she was very nice and gave me a tour that lasted about 45 minutes.

We had mom at Spring Arbor. It's really clean, looks newly painted, is only 12 years old, and is all on one floor. They have a small population of 90, and 70 of those are in assisted living; the rest are memory care. Everyone was really nice and really kind. She went to a couple of musicals where people played music for the audience, and she went to Bingo a couple of times. The dining area is very nice, they had assigned seating -- which I think was probably good -- she seemed happy with the food, and they gave them huge servings.

Spring Arbor of Richmond did not appeal to me visually, although the surrounding was nice and modest looking; the bedrooms were small. The grounds were limited for walking outdoors, and my dad likes to walk outdoors. The staff was very nice, and they gave me a nice tour. There's nothing wrong with the facility at all; it just didn’t match with what my parents were looking for.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

The community that my mother was in is my favorite by far, they just did not do colostomy care, but they were awesome. I would highly recommend them! That's Spring Arbor! My mother was there for three years and I loved it. The staff was just phenomenal. They truly loved their residents and they got excellent care. They're all about serving the residents and their family. They're excellent. Mainly, they were just very loving. It was a beautiful facility. They have just done some updating. They have built in a new courtyard and they have renovated one wing to be a memory unit and it is gorgeous. My mother was actually a day resident for the last month that she was there. They did not have a room for her, so she kept her same room and it was wonderful. I would rate it a 5. In fact, I have recommended it to two friends who mothers were there now. Spring Arbor has a lot of activities, e.g., exercise, bingo, bridge and games. They had a van where they took them out to lunch, go on scenic drive, go on little field trips, i.e., to the winery, to museums, to concerts and to apple picking. They even do some service projects with the residents. They also have specials like wine and dine nights and they have special meals for holidays.

About Spring Arbor of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia

Spring Arbor of Richmond-Henrico, a premier senior living community is located in the beautiful west end area of Henrico and offers Assisted Living and specialized Memory Care services to individuals living with Alzheimer’s or Dementia-Related Alzheimer’s. Our beautiful and inviting décor is only surpassed by the warm and compassionate care delivered by our team of senior living professionals. At Spring Arbor of Richmond-Henrico, one and two bedroom apartments are featured as well as a variety of services and amenities designed to nurture and support our resident’s need for independence, privacy and safety.

At Spring Arbor Living Richmond, our senior living caregivers are more concerned with the resident than a task list. This doesn’t mean that tasks are not important. We believe that the senior living residents in our care deserve the very best. We also believe that growing older doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice choices in the aspects of everyday life.

Validation Therapy is a communication technique that allows memory care caregivers to better relate to our Alzheimer’s and Memory Care residents by connecting with residents where they are on life’s journey on any given day. For example, if a memory care resident sees themselves as a 35 year old working professional, then the memory caregiver joins the resident in their reality. This is primarily accomplished by accepting the values and beliefs of the resident without confrontation. Trying to reorient a memory care resident to “facts” often is confusing and unsuccessful for the resident. The caregiver is putting themselves in the shoes of the resident, not simply by trying to move an individual’s attention from one thing to another; it is also about validating feelings and emotions.

The Spring Arbor Living of Richmond’s “Art from the Heart” program puts a paintbrush in the hands of residents who have Alzheimer’s or other memory impairment. The results are amazing. Our Alzheimer's care residents who have struggled with even the most modest tasks of everyday living have astounded all of us with their creative spirits and wonderful creations.
