I visited friends at Harbor's Edge Retirement Community. I've been over there many times to visit friends in rehab, but never into the memory care area itself. From the time I came in the door, there was a woman named Sylvia, and she was so friendly and just bubbly. She just made me feel welcome, and while she was helping me, everybody that came in the door, she knew, and they would say hi. After she contacted the person that I was meeting there because I was early, she showed me a very comfortable place to sit and relax while I was waiting for Kirsten, the person who showed me around. The rooms were very nice, and those that I visited were empty, and they're in the new memory wing. It currently isn't open. It's finished, but they are in the process of waiting for another shower room to be built. So currently they don't have a room available, and no date as to when it will be. The facility is spotless. Everyone that I've ever met has been very pleasant. Kirsten is even new, she's only been there a number of months, and she was very knowledgeable, very compassionate, and very friendly. She's in a job that she needs to be in. I will have to bring furniture, even in memory care.

My mother was in rehab at Harbor's Edge. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the food was an A-plus. The only negative though was you couldn't open windows, so I couldn't send her back there. She needed fresh air to breathe better. She didn't have any complaints about the food, she thought it was good. The insurance paid for it so that was pretty good. She also said that rehab was really easy. The staff went out of their way to take her outside occasionally. So that was nice, it was an extra that they went out of their way to help take care of her. They had a place where you can get some fresh air, and so they would do that for her at least once a day.

We just moved into the River Tower at Harbor's Edge 9/21. We both turned 70 this year. My husband is still working. It is beyond our expectations. Unlike other retirement community options, we were able to customize our unit, change walls, finishes, lighting, flooring floor plan, etc. It was time to renovate our previous home anyway. Some residents have combined units. If you can think of it - they will execute it. It does come at a price, but this is going to be a place where we hope to live for many years. You will love the tax advantages that follow. And now we have long term care insurance. The staff gives you Ritz Carlton treatment. We can lock up and leave, worry free. The food is fabulous, and although it is healthy eating - it doesn't taste like it. The facilities available are beautiful, comprehensive and first rate. Downtown Norfolk is a vibrant place. Walkable to our physicians' offices, coffee shops, restaurants, museum, theater, music venues and our friends from our previous neighborhood. In closing, our only regret is that we did not move here when I was still working. It would have made those last years of working so much easier.

My husband is a resident of Harbor's Edge Retirement Community. It's a very nice place, he liked it a lot. There's the former building, and there's a new building. Right now, as of a couple of weeks ago, he was transferred from the old building to the new building because they're renovating where he was living; but he'll be moving back there. I like the old building better than the new building. The staff has been very good, and if there is someone that we don't care for, we complain and we don't see them again. In the unit that he was living in, he has a dining room, living room, with a small kitchenette. It's a big room, and he had a large bedroom; it has a very large closet and a large bathroom. The rooms vary somewhat. He takes physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and water therapy. They have a dining room, and they have activities that you can go to and they're off the site. They'll take you to various things. He doesn't do any of those because we've done so many things over in our life that he's not interested in doing any of those. It's pretty good, actually, but I don't want to get in there. It's okay if you end up in assisted living and you have long-term care insurance. But if you don't live in long term and you don't have long term care insurance, it is not cheap. I think it's the same as most places are around here.

We've been living in the Harbor's Edge Retirement Community. We're kind of split right now, my wife is in long-term care, and I'm in independent living. They've been very, very helpful, and flexible with what we needed and have provided help. Even the outside companies come in and help if they are needed. It's like eating in a nice four- or five-star restaurant, or a cruise ship that doesn't go anywhere. The cleanliness is very good. This is four or five stars all the way, and it should be for what we pay. They have activities for independent people, and they take them out to the opera, they take them out to dinner. We have an activities director who almost daily provides activities, various things from bingo to cards to flower arranging, to doing your nails, and doing your hair, styling your hair. It's all in one facility. That's the nice thing about it. This is a 17-story building, it requires quite a bit of maintenance, and we've got a full maintenance staff. Next door, we just built a 20-story building, and it's attached to this building. So we now have maybe four restaurants here for food. We have bars, a separate bar, you go for drinks at night. We have wind down Wednesdays where you go and have hors d'oeuvres and wine at 4:00 in the afternoon before dinner or something. The facilities are very, very nice. This one is a brand-new tower. They just moved, which I think it's about half full now. Of course, this one's full. They're renovating the entire third floor, so the downside to it is the inconvenience when they're refurbishing everything and renovating. But other than that, when it's finished, it's done very nicely, first class, five star, new. Even though we're separated now, and occupying two units, we're only paying for the original amount that we paid when we came here, so it's a pretty nice deal.

I went to Harbor's Edge Retirement Community. It was very nice, the staff knew I was coming, so they were expecting me. I was greeted. We did the tour first and then we sat down and discussed the cost and the type of services that are available in that facility because they did a couple of things at that particular location. The tour itself was okay. The rooms there are like mini apartments, I guess you could say, they are handicapped accessible. They have little kitchenettes in them, they don't have a full refrigerator, and stoves, and all that stuff. They did quite a few activities. They did a lot of outings as well. They go to different venues, I think the residents can give suggestions or recommendations the way they want to go and things like that. They had lots of services like spa and parlor, that type of stuff was in there. They can do more level of care. So even if they are in assisted living and you need something, they do have that available as well.
