Independent Living Reviews for The Fairmont

October 01, 2020

By Shirley

I visited this facility

The Fairmont is great. I completed the tour, but I was not able to afford the monthly fee. I thought it was a place for low-income people, but evidently it wasn't. It was an in-person tour. It was very nice. Their staff was very nice. The room was a one-bedroom. It had a walk-in bath, which is important to me. It had three closets, a living room, a dining area, and a kitchenette. I did not try their food. From what I've seen, the facility was very clean, and very inviting. I think the value for money is a little high for a low-income place.

Staff is very friendly and treats the residents like they are family. They take all of the CDC and local Health Department protocols very seriously. The social director is wonderful.

I went to the Fairmont and it was a very nice building. It was closer to what we were looking for, but it wasn't quite there yet. It had more independent folks, and all meals were provided, but my parents were looking for a full kitchen. The price was more reasonable than the others places. Mr. Miller, who gave me the tour, was super nice, and the staff was very pleasant. The facility was older, but it was very well maintained. When I went in, they were finishing lunch, they were doing a trivia game, and everyone was fully engaged, which was nice to see. Behind the lobby area is a sitting area. Someone brought in some jewelry that they were selling, there were some folks checking those things out, and there were some ladies sitting in lobby with their dogs. It was so nice to see a pet being welcomed; it gave people a real sense of home to see a pet.

The Fairmont is very good. The people are very friendly and the management follow through. The staff is very nice and attentive. What they offer is really great for the price. The place seemed very friendly and there are activities all the time. It's very inclusive and has a nice atmosphere and ambiance. The meals are very good. The actual apartment that my mom has is much larger than other places of similar category. The general appearance is being kept up and the layout is very good. It all heads towards a central area where they all come together, and there's a lot of light which I think is important for older people. They have activities thoughout the day. They have a shuttle bus that takes people places, they have people come in and clean once a week and do the linens, and it's all part of it.

I would say that it's a disappointing tour to The Fairmont when coming down the road to reach them. It was in a depressed area that has an empty feel, it's in an industrial section that they're trying to convert into residential. To locate the community, you're travelling on a road where you have to find a church, turn into a church area, go through the church parking lot to get to their area. It wasn't attractive in appearance as well. The staff who accommodated me during the tour was very helpful and polite. There wasn't any pressure on their part or anything, they're cordial, and they provided information and answered questions that I had. The place looked to me like they're good. The people that were there were in wheelchairs, they looked well cared for as far as appearance.

The apartments at The Fairmont looked OK. I saw some activities and some people were exercising. The dining area was clean and pretty nice. They had a library, recreation area, and sitting area, and they all looked pretty nice as well. The staff was fine.

The Fairmont was very nice and like a resort. I was very impressed by the amenities, facilities, and the staff who were all very friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. They were open with the information and the questions that we asked. The apartments were very nice. The one-bedroom seemed to be sufficient, but, if possible, we want to put my mother-in-law in something larger. We wish it was closer to where we live. The grounds were very nice.

My mother-in-law was over at The Fairmont for about a year. It’s a retirement facility where they prepare all of your meals, but she wasn’t happy with the food. We couldn’t get her to eat anything. She refused to socialize and snubbed her nose at everybody. She needed more help with everyday things, and we were wearing ourselves out even though it was only maybe 2 miles away going back and forth -- sometimes 1 to 2 times a day. The rooms were spacious. She had an efficiency, and she had more than enough room. We had a bed, a dresser, and a bookshelf. She had 2 living room chairs and a coffee table. It had a kitchenette, so she had a sink, a refrigerator, a microwave, and pantry. There were no stoves in any of the units because it would encourage the members to go down and have dinner in the dining room. She had a full-sized tub with a walk-in entrance to it. Everything was handicap-enabled. They had the emergency pull cord in the room. She had one of the smaller units. Some of the bigger units are quite big, and we would see people moving in and moving out bringing in full sets of furniture. The room was as big or as little as you wanted. They don’t provide a lot of care. You had to hire from the outside to provide care. The only thing that they provide is housekeeping service. The Fairmont is for somebody who has all their faculties and is still very independent.

The visit at Fairmont was a good visit, but the food was not that impressive. The person who gave us the tour did a good job. They showed us two types of rooms; one was studio, and the other one was larger. They were OK.

The Fairmont was a very nice facility. It was open and bright. All the people I saw interacting with the tour guide that I had seemed really happy there. The tour guide seemed to know all their likes and dislikes, and it was all very personal. The apartments seemed nice and adequate. I was very impressed by it.

I visited this facility

The Fairmont is a beautiful and large facility. The lobby and dining area are large too. But the apartment itself was very small and I could not imagine how we will be able to get anything in there besides a single bed and a chair. Both gentlemen who assisted me were very cordial and friendly. But they kept on calling me, trying to convince me into signing the papers as soon as possible which I am not prepared to do because my mom-in-law is still in the hospital with pneumonia and I still could not make a decision. My first impression of The Fairmont was highly favorable but because of that, my final impression of them was quite the opposite. I really felt like they were badgering me. I felt like they were trying to sell me a car. I am giving them a rating of one star because of that. If not for that, I would have given the facility a four-star rating. I suggest they focus less about sales and focus more on what is really best for the prospective residents and their families.

The Fairmount was OK. It was $1,500 cheaper than other places, but I don’t think I really like it here and don’t know if Mom is going to stay for long. The staff helps her bathe, dress, and clean her room. The rooms are really nice and brand new. They have marble floors, brand-new carpets, and are very clean. They have doctors there, and the food is good. I don’t like the manager, but otherwise, I like everything about it.

The Fairmont was very nice, the staff was great to talk to, and he gave me a lot of information. Fairmont is closer to me, and I can get to it in 15 minutes. I didn’t feel that they had the extended staff to take care of mom’s further needs. If she required more attention, I think I will move her again.

We found a place for mom! Ron and I toured The Fairmont, in Manassas, VA. We were both very pleased with what we saw and heard. We also brought our mother out to the retirement community for her to see it and to get her feeling and opinion. We also had the opportunity to have lunch at their dining facility, with which we also had a very pleasant experience. We met and spoke with Jed. He was very easy to communicate with and more than willing to answer any of our questions. As an Independent Living Community, we were all pleased with the entire facility and the environment. So much so, that we signed a lease with this community for our mother, with Jed! Our mother was very pleased with the surroundings as there was much to like about the entire community. Thank you so much for all your help and patience and for all the information you have provided. Your assistance was very helpful and informative to both my brother and I, as we transitioned our mother into a retirement community. We are both very appreciative of your support and assistance. On behalf of my brother, Ron, and myself, and my mother, thanks again for all you valuable assistance.

The Fairmont was a nice place, but a little distant from where I live, and it would be hard to visit my daughter too often. However, the people and the programs seemed much better there than anything else we've seen. They had things set up, so they could take the residents shopping and to movies, and they had three films a week in the facility. They had a lot of other activities and clubs there. They're a lot better than other places, and the food seemed to be very good. They had studios and one-bedrooms.

It's beautiful, and the staff's friendliness are the things that I liked about The Fairmont. It's independent living, so they don’t really provide assisted care; that is why it didn’t fit our needs.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I think the staff at The Fairmont is very friendly and professional. They seem to encourage the residents to get out and do things. My parents are limited because they are disabled. My mother can't walk. But the bingo and games that they come out with, music and trivia and stuff and whatever they do is always encouraging people to get out and participate in any way they can. That I like, and that is really good. They kind of like force you into it. That is what the people in this age needs. My parents need the encouragement, and they need to be pushed to do things. Physically, they can't, and my father has a case of Alzheimer's so he follows another round. Even the residents seem to be very friendly. Of course there are one or two people who are obnoxious, but you'll find them everywhere. The staff is great, and most of the residents are just helpful and friendly. I really have no complaints, and they seem to be happy there. It was a good choice. Not seeing many other places, I find it to be pleasing to the eyes. The dining area is in an atrium, and it is bright and sunny. It is an old building, but it has been maintained, and it has been upgraded. Having a lot of people in and out, it is going to have wear and tear, but they do maintain and keep up with it. The only thing I find odd since it is independent living, they don't have any cooking facilities. They come to the sink and a small refrigerator. We bought a larger refrigerator for them and bought a microwave. They didn't come with a microwave or anything to heat the food. My mother is a cook, and she loves her cooking. That is the only thing, but we knew that coming in. I can't really find any fault with the place or the staff. Right now everything has really been great. They communicate, and they helped when my mother needed some medication, and they were right on top of it. They called the pharmacy, and the pharmacy delivered. Whatever the needs are, they are there. They immediately reached out to me and my then daughter. So I think that was very good, and it was immediate. They didn't waste any time, and they just went and hop right on it. That I like because I think they put their residents first.

I lived in Fairmont. The management didn’t know what they were doing and they didn’t keep the place up. The staff there was wonderful and they got a great management team before it was changed and the one they have now is terrible. They have the greatest activities director but the management was lazy and was piling work on her. She had entertainment come in for the residents and she started a writing class. The rest of the staff were super great. They need to have a management that really cares about the residents.

The one that we spent most time with and they spent most time with us was The Fairmont. We were attracted to it for several reasons. First of all, they were several floors high, but they did have one-bedroom like an efficiency apartment on the first floor with outside exposure. I had two dogs, and they said that they welcome them in their community. It seemed like it would work for me, and all of the people were extraordinary. They went out of their way to coordinate the availability of this particular unit. However, they only offered independent living.

The Fairmont was more affordable, and it was a smaller community. For independent living, it seemed to be kind of attractive. The dining area was nice. It was a little bit more family style, and it was toned down. It was not a big production and it was more of like a personal dining room. The food was better than hotdog. The room was adequate. You could have everything from efficiency apartment to a larger one-bedroom with a den. For a single person, they were adequate. They provided some transportation to take people to doctor's appointments. Occasionally, they would take them out to an outing, a shopping mall, to a theater, or something like that for those who don't drive. However, they were looking for more active seniors I would say between the 60 or 75 or so age bracket. They were not looking for people who needed nursing care. I would recommend them for the younger and more active people.

I liked best the staff of Fairmont; they were just very friendly. The facility was OK, but the crowded neighborhood was unappealing, and so the entrance or where you drive through to get there was unappealing, and that was why we ruled it out. The facility itself I would give a five, but the issue was the neighborhood frankly.

My mom is in The Fairmont. I like it overall. I like what it provides for the money. It is a nice place in a nice area, and it meets her needs. Everything is fine. It is very catering. It is like a home community. The key staff lives on site. They are there 24/7, and they go out of their way to accommodate the residents and make you feel you're in like a real community home. They provide very personalized service. They assign a mentor to each newcomer to the facility to help people acclimate and settle in. They introduce them to people and help them get used to the activities and show them around. I have no complaints whatsoever. They are over and above. We ordered a new TV for my mom, and when my sister went there to install it and hook up the cable, one of guys in the office did that for her. They do everything, and they are very accommodating. It is a reasonable and affordable place.

The Fairmont was an older community and very dated. It didn't have that warm, cozy feeling. It was clean but the atmosphere was dated. You walk in and right to the right is their really big room where everyone dines. That was inviting but the furniture looked old and the pictures looked cheesy. It didn't have any elegance to it, it just of had a basic look and feel. It was clean, the outside was okay and the inside just looked okay. The rooms were average size and the windows looked dated. It had a little kitchenette, a little mini sink and a little mini refrigerator. The dining room was 2-story open and looked nice enough. The residents seemed happy so that's a good thing.

The Fairmont is an extremely friendly environment where the residents are known by their first names & watched out for by each other & the employees at the facility. There are two live-in couples that look after the residents & manage the facility, as well as, help serve at meal times. There are two washers & dryers for each floor & there are three floors. Everything is kept very clean & decorated for different seasons & is cheerful & tastefully decorated. There is a nice area around the facility for the residents to walk & enjoy the outdoors in seating areas as well. There are snacks & fruit & drinks available at all times within the dining room & my parents enjoy the three meals provided each day. The employees that clean the resident's apartments are consistently the same so that the residents get to know them & there is consistency in the same employees employed within the rest of the facility from the chef, cooks, servers & the bus driver who are all very personable, friendly & respectful. The activities director is very interactive & great with the residents as well. Overall, my parents enjoy living at the Fairmont!

The Fairmont is a property overseen by Holiday Retirement which oversees & maintains approximately 300 properties in the U.S. & Canada. Because of this, the standards of their facilities are well maintained. The Fairmont is equipped with many wonderful amenities including a Fitness room, Billiards lounge, T.V./Media Room with Nintendo Wii (commonly used for group bowling tournaments), three nutritious chef prepared meals a day, weekly house keeping & linen service, and a private dining room for special occasions. An especially unique perk to living within a Holiday Retirement community is their exclusive travel program wherein a resident may choose to visit any of the other 300 communities at no additional cost. It's a great opportunity to experience new areas, new communities, and meet new people. The rooms at the Fairmont are nice, standard & comfortable. Although nothing extraordinary or ornate, the community is such an inviting atmosphere that residents are invited to spend much of their time enjoying the various amenities. Also, four-legged friends are welcomed which is rare in most senior living communities. There's a full calendar of events from exercise classes & bingo to crafts & various card game nights. All in all, the Fairmont has many innovative & unique approaches to the network of communities they've created for their valued residents, and is a wonderful, warm environment for your loved one to thrive in.
