We visited Brookdale Harrisonburg. We spoke with a resident's family member as we were leaving, and she had nothing but wonderful glowing praise for the staff and the place where her mother was staying. She said the staff was genuinely interested in the people, not just as patients, but as friends, as folks that they wanted to take care of and she loved that element of the personnel that worked there. She said we wouldn't go wrong if we chose to have my dad and stepmother there. The least that I liked was everything was smaller. The rooms were smaller, not only their living quarters but also the salon. They had a spa, which was a small room with a large tub in it. Everything was smaller and it was very dark. I like lots of light and of all three places, Brookdale was the darkest. The darkness did not help the thing. The dining area was well-appointed, but again, smaller and dark. If it was around lunchtime and we couldn't stay, they'd give us a box to take home so we could test the food. Of the three, the only one that offered us to try the food was Brookdale. They had some positives, but overall, I know my dad wouldn't like it because the rooms were so small. We got there at 1:00 and they were doing a deep cleaning of the main living area carpeting. The carpet cleaning equipment was at a high and there were large fans blowing at the same time. There was a lot of noise. There were very few residents that we saw. They offered to show us what they called a Jack-and-Jill residence, which was two units that were joined by a bathroom. If Dad wanted to have a his-and-her apartment, this would be an option. We spoke with the resident who happened to be an acquaintance of my husband, which was nice. She was in her room and she had had an injury and she was trying to get back home. She didn't have anything negative to say, but neither did she look like she wanted to stay. I like their willingness to help their people to know they were not patients, they weren't clients, they were patrons and they treated them as such with respect and with caring. They were good about giving us the tour and being very friendly and open and offering us ways to come and understand the place better. It's an older facility. They've been around for 27 years, so it wasn't in great shape, it wasn't in bad shape. I've seen worse and they also said whenever somebody was moving out, they would come in, deep clean the carpets or pull out the carpet and put down new and repaint the rooms. We saw one room that was ready to be switched over, and we were told that's what they do for each new resident. It was looking a little rough prior to repairs being done. The room size and bathrooms were small. They were clean, but there was evidence of leaks and areas that needed repair.

My husband moved into Brookdale Harrisonburg. It's the most reasonable, and they had a lot of activities for him. They take good care of him. It's a nice, little apartment, fully staffed. They keep them busy all day long. I can bring in our dog to visit with him. They have painting classes and puzzles, and it keeps their mind and stuff occupied, keeps them busy. They take them out to eat once in a while. They have a patio where they can go out, it is locked off, so they can't go anywhere else. I would recommend them.

Brookdale Harrisonburg was perfect, but my sister-in-law is not ready to go. The staff was very nice, the room was nice, and they allowed a pet which was perfect for her. They had a beautiful garden. She ate a meal there and she said it was delicious. It was very clean. They had a rehab room, a general room, an introductory room, the dining room, and a front porch and rocking chairs. It was very nice.

I toured Brookdale Harrisonburg. I liked it fine. It looked nice. The staff I met were very friendly. The bedrooms were large and nice. They had many activities. They had a salon and a rehab place for exercises. It is all in one building, but I went to the memory care part.

Brookdale Harrisonburg had a nice and clean environment. I liked the room size. They had a mingle night, which was healthy for all the people there. They learn from each other, so I thought that was good and liked that. The staff was nice and pleasant. The people there seemed really upbeat.

I appreciate everything about Brookdale Harrisonburg. Jennifer was wonderful and very willing to answer questions and show me around. She keeps communicating with me, sends me messages, and answers my questions. It's a wonderful facility, and we're hoping that we can financially work it out. They have the activities listed and posted, so the residents can see it. They go down and encourage them to come out and participate. They even have a happy hour early in the evening. It's a very welcoming community. They have places where you can get drinks and visit. They have a piano and a place out there where you can grill on the patios or a little courtyard. Families are welcome as well. I looked at the menus and she explained that they have them outside the door before you go into the dining area, so they can choose and make their food from scratch. I didn't taste any of it but it smelled so good in there. We were there around the lunch hour. The facility was very nice, clean, attractive, and didn't have any peculiar odors. I was really impressed. There was a room with a pastor having a devotional. They do various activities in that room as well. They even encourage the ladies to bring their favorite recipes, and they'll make it and enjoy it together. They have laundry facilities around.
