My wife just spent 19 days at the Laurels for rehab. If you want your love ones or friends to receive rehab care in a clean, well organized facility with compassionate, thoughtful caregivers, then you should consider The Laurels. Everyday and throughout the day, caring staff kept her comfortable, responded quickly to her needs, made sure she was assisted, repeatedly cleaned her and the room, administered her drugs on schedule, talked with her and always encouraged her to improve in her rehab tasks. No rehab center can claim to be perfect, but I felt confident that every day my wife was well cared for and in good hands as a patient at the Laurels.

I am happy to say Samantha the New activities Director is bringing new ideas to keep us all involved and active in all different types of activities in our building she brings smiles and amazing vibes to our building and looking forward to see what is to come for all of us she is doing a amazing job.

Short staffed; always waiting on staff, needs often ignored. Mediocre food. Pt/ot mediocre not always receptive to patients real needs. No private rooms. Phone has to go through switchboard, not direct line. Skilled nursing has to eat in isolation. Not included in activities or dining hall.

This facility is one of the cleanest Iv ever seen. The Staff there are amazing and Very polite and respectful. The front desk Receptionist Samantha was very pleasant and helpful over the phone as well as when we arrived to the facility. She was very kind and respectful Wich was calming to us need more people like her in the customer service field. This place is great from what I seen and staff are amazing Thanks for everyone's hard work and dedication it is very much appreciated.

Dirty. Not enough staff especially in the evenings and nights. There are phones in the rooms but it is hard to get the operator to answer and transfer your call. My mom got frightened because another resident kept coming into her room calling her name. She never wants to go back there.

My mom is staying at The Laurels of Charlottesville. It was the most convenient for her needs. She stayed there when she came out of the hospital, that's where they put her. She's been in their skilled nursing facility since February. They're understaffed so I really can' t give them a bad review for that. It' s the shortage of nurses and they lack a timeframe. Like if the residents would need something, there's no timeframe so they could wait forever. The daytime crew is perfect but the nighttime crew leaves something to be desired. There are things that she can't eat because she doesn't have a lower plate but they keep giving her stuff that they say that they won't put on there but put on there anyways. Like she can't bite into a chicken leg or she can't bite into an apple, and stuff like that. They supposedly monitor what she's eating, but I've been there when she sent so much of it back, so she's gone hungry. She will ask for something and they don't come back with it. They have activities and she goes to bingo but we have hospice coming in for her and they seem to do more things with her with music, games, and stuff like that. They don't have a gym but they have a therapy room where they can go in and they can use any equipment after 3 o'clock. They have a lot of cards too and they have bingo. We are not getting what we pay for, considering she has a bed and a TV for $12000. It's going to be $8000 a month but $12000 was the first bill so it's pretty sad.

I had a family member admitted on a weekend for PT and OT First they kept her in her hospital gown until we got there late afternoon then we changed her. She had two surgeries prior to coming in and needed assistance walking they left her in her room without a walker or any help to get up out of bed or to restroom. As a family we felt it was best to remove her The rooms were filthy the roommate was discharged in the am and her side of the room hadn’t been cleaned as of 4:00 pm Staff is rude and disrespectful. My suggestion is to visit before getting there. We didn’t have this option as arrangement was made through the hospital

I've been down at The Laurels of Charlottesville a couple of times because my dad had been in their skilled nursing a number of times in the last 3 years. In general, I would rate it as mediocre at best. He had to call me 3 times because of issues that were going on. I had to talk to the director and have him talk to the nursing head of the nursing staff to basically correct what issues were happening. That was very frustrating. He's been a resident on and off for a couple of years. He would be in there, do rehab, and then come out. The last time, I think it was about two weeks. I would say that the staff could be better. He was transferred from one room to another at one time and left alone there for a couple of hours on his own in a hard chair with no one tending to him or helping them get into his bed and whatnot. They also argued about his ability to have access to his emergency breathing, like the asthma type of thing. I'm in Michigan, and I had to call the director on 3 different occasions. There were times when I would call and leave a message for them to call me back, and I wouldn't hear for another day or so. I would give them a middle-of-the-road rating. The facility is OK. The times that I visited, it seemed to be tidy. It was OK, but nothing stands out as good or bad. I wouldn't know about the food because at that point my dad had a stomach tube, so he was fed to the stomach. He wasn't like in the cafeteria or whatever.

I’m a resident of the Laurels, I have been here since November 8th 2019. The meals are served in the rooms and 2 dinning rooms with pleasant attitude, the staff are courteous and friendly, very clean place to live. I would recommend to anyone in need of assisted living.

The staff is very professional and truly care. It's not easy trusting someone that you don't know to care for your love one. I highly recommended The Laurels for anyone who needs this kind of care.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I recently had my 2nd knee replaced and the hospital encouraged me to go to another place in Charlottesville. After 1 night of being at the other place and no one coming and seeing me, not getting my meds all night and being in the most pain I have ever been in I knew I needed to go to the Laurels. I had done rehab with the Laurels for my 1st knee replacement and knew I would get the care I needed from the caring staff. The rooms may not be private but the therapy and nursing staff make up for it.

This place is awful. I wouldn't send my dog there. I had the unfortunate experience of rehabbing with the Laurels following a knee replacement. The staff was unresponsive at best (be prepared to wait 45 minutes to get assistance to go to the bathroom), the place was dirty (previous resident's pills on the floor of the bathroom along with dust bunnies), the food was inedible and to top if off, I woke up in the middle of the night to find a staffer going through my belongings. When I complained and wanted to discharge early, the doctor would not discharge me so I did not have pain meds to go home with. Disgusting place and the management does not give a darn. I had no response to my written complaint.

So far, The Laurels of Charlottesville is good. They do have activities for my mother. I know they have bingo. They had a Mother's Day lunch. My mother's room is clean and well maintained, but it could be bigger. She has a roommate, which is OK, but it would be nice if they have a little bit more closet space. However, it's nice and clean. My mother hates the food though. It seems to be the same thing all the time. My mother complains about everything because she doesn't want to be there. However, when I was there, the staff members were very nice. And I think -- like most other facilities now -- that they're maybe a little short-staffed, so they don't come quickly as my mom would like them to. I think The Laurels of Charlottesville is one of the nicer facilities in Charlottesville when we compare it with some of the others. When you're talking about the ones with Medicaid and Medicare, I think this might be the best one in Charlottesville.

I was referred to the Laurels by my Orthopedist from Martha Jefferson Hospital. The therapist are the best around and the nurses on unit 3 are amazing! I am going to be having another knee replacement will definitely be going back.

I visited this facility

We admitted my mom there after she fractured her pelvis. At first they seemed nice enough but it was a front. It looks lovely but in the 2 wks she was there she never had a bath, room was never cleaned and the bed was only changed once. She had the same gown on for 3 days. They tried to say she had a bath but why would you put the same clothes back on? She had an accident and messed herself because no one would continue help her to the bathroom. My dad was there and they slammed her door, fussed at her, and was rough with her. When we decided to move her they cornered my dad screaming at him. When I got there he was a mess. The only time they did give her a shower and cleaned the room was the day she left and that was because the inspectors came that day. They have flunked the health inspections numerous times. I beg of you to never put your love ones through this.

I Unfortunatly had to leave my 84 year old father at the Laurels after a broken hip surgery and was so horribly upset by the treatment and care of him I took him out after a week. They were short staff and there was never help around for him and we ended up making sure one of the family stayed with him at all times. He always felt the people there were angry with him. They were rough and hurt him every day.The room was dirty and the bathroom horrible. He unfortunatley died after a week once we got him out of there and I cant help but feel if he had better care it would not have happened. His roommate there was also rushed to Hospital during this week. It was like the people there were doing what they had to do because it was a job and not because they were caring individuals. Lots of Mistakes and Miscommunication with the staff....My advice is dont leave loved one there

My 99 year old mother was admitted there from the hospital. The medical staff seems nice enough, but the support staff, social workers, people in admitting, etc., were a nightmare. The social worker was unhelpful and when I was finally able to get her to answer a question the information given was wrong. She mostly just starred blankly at me during any attempt from me to have a discussion about anything. They do not have voice mail and phone calls are not returned. Good luck trying to talk to someone. No one seems to take patient notes and I had several people ask the same questions about my mother that I had already answered that were supposed to be in her records. In fact, the same person asked me the same question several times on different days. There is no communication between staff. I had one staff member try to bully me and then guilt me into taking my wheelchair bound mother with dementia who was also on oxygen to a podiatrist's appointment myself because she didn't want to do it. She also lied about it being a facility rule. She called me several times to try and bully me. I was my mother's primary care giver for 30 years and have nothing to feel guilty about. I found it unbelievable that should continued to call me and act as a bully. The rooms are dark and small and frankly, the place doesn't smell that good. The place is unprofessional and I moved my mother out of there as soon as a bed opened up elsewhere.

over crowded and under staffed ,unable to care for my father-in-law with high blood gluclose , had to remove the day after admission and take to emergency room where he was admitted with a heart attack.Very poor dangerous place to have someone!!!!!

My 87-year-old mother recently spent a month at The Laurels for extended rehab following a hospital stay. I have to say I was impressed by the week-day staff. They were caring, efficient, and competent. I saw senior staff help residents participate in activities by telling and reminding residents about the day's activities and encouraging them to participate, helping to wheel those in wheel chairs to the activities, grabbing coats for residents attending outdoor events, and in general just doing whatever they could to engage residents and help keep them connected. The food was pretty good, and the dieticians and kitchen staff were flexible and willing to provide food the residents would eat, and more importantly, enjoy. The occupational and rehabilitation therapists were great. They pushed when they could, joked and cajoled when they needed to, and overall provided sound and beneficial rehabilitative services. My review of the weekend staff isn't quite as glowing, though. My mother waited until late morning or close to lunchtime to be dressed. She spent long days with limited engagement. The rehab services were just as great on the weekends as during the week, and the food services were fine. But the floor staff didn't measure up to the week-day staff. But overall we were very pleased with the facilities and the staff. And if I need a respite break, I would definitely consider placing my mother at The Laurels.
