My mother was in Deerbrook Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation. My issue with them was they didn't clean her good. She wound up with a severe kidney infection that I did not know about, which apparently she had for quite a while while she was there. The paper they sent with the EMS that she was supposed to be delivered to, they had the wrong address on there. They did not call me and let me know, and I live in the house with her. She was supposed to be out on Sunday. Then they changed it to Saturday, and then she wound up being sent home Friday night. On the paper it said 5:00, but she got here at 8:00. They could not find the house because it had the wrong address on it. They did not set up any homecare at all, which is supposed to be done before she leaves the place. I had her by myself and I'm 71. She weighs 245 pounds and I had to handle her all weekend long by myself. I could not ever get her completely dry. I did the best I could, but by Monday morning she was lethargic and having hard chills. I called the ambulance and when they got her to the hospital she was almost into sepsis. Her urine looked like milkshake. This has been going on for a long time. It didn't ever get this bad in that short of time because I only had her from Friday night until Monday morning. I wouldn't send anybody there. There were some staff members that were real good and some that didn't clean her at all. They didn't get all the poo off her and I knew she was going to wind up with a bladder infection. It had gone to the right kidney and it was swollen. They just threw her out of there without calling me. They called another person that's not even kin to us, and told that person they couldn't find the place. They had to give her fentanyl because she had broken her back. She was in a lot of pain and she can't take codeine. They did what they could as far as pain relief, but it made her flip out. The place was clean. The social worker was very rude to me. The other woman had talked to her first, and what she had said about me I don't know. I'm the daughter and the other person is not. She should have listened to me more so than the other person, but she treated me very rude. In fact, she said, "We don't consider this a jail." Why would you say that to somebody? I was just trying to get information about how much longer she would stay in there. I thought it was a regulation to set up a home health already in place from the time the person got to their house. The atmosphere was very restricted. You could hear a pin drop out there. People even sitting outside didn't say anything. They were all quiet. There was no life in the place at all. They could talk, but they weren't talking. If you talk to them they'd say hello, but very low. There was no life in the community areas there at all. There were some staff that were real nice. Mother was supposed to be on oxygen 24/7, but it was like four or five days she'd been in there with no oxygen. They brought a machine in that didn't even work, and finally a doctor came in and fixed it, and nobody in there knew how to fix it. There was just too much wrong that they did to Mother that shouldn't be done to anybody because of the shape she was in when she lived there.

Deerbrook Nursing Home was OK. It was just a little bit further away, and the facility looked a little older. I also felt that the person I talked to wasn't that welcoming and that turned me off. It was still a nice place.

Deerbrook Skilled Nursing And Rehabilitation was very helpful in providing all the information we requested and they answered all our questions. They have limitations on the visits and what they can show due to COVID but everything they showed us was good. We're going to see the rooms when we come back because they only showed those in a video. We saw the video and everything in the room looks pretty good to go. They have a courtyard, they took us outside and they looked pretty good. They have a secure area and they have somebody to be with the residents. It's well maintained, they have a pretty good setup and a pretty good discipline in the community. The cafeteria is pretty clean, they provide all the meals and everything looks good.

Stay invovled in your loved one's care daily. There are some excellent employees who care for the patients but it is not the norm.

Patient said the food was never up to temperature. Cold food. Had to bring food that was edible. Smelled in the building. They would not launder clothes. Just gave a bag of dirty smelly clothes when we left. Had to insist on some clean clothes when leaving. Took a shower. The pillow in wheelchair was nasty dirty. Head nurse was a Nurse Rackett. Personality issues about power and control. Left for a holistic complete care that concerns the patients and physicians.
