During mealtimes we try to create an atmosphere conducive for residents with dementia. We have dark tables with white plates to help a resident recognize when food is in front of them. Our staff approach from the front and as they place the plate of food in front of the resident and announce what is being served and queue the resident by placing a fork or spoon in their hand. Many times staff use a hand over hand technique to help residents get started eating and staff eat with residents and sit at the table to observe and help. Distractions, loud music or noises, and interruptions are minimized during this time. Our memory care home cares for no more than 16 residents and we do not have large dinning halls or eating areas where residents might feel lost or intimidated.
