I visited this facility

We liked everything about Laurelmead. The people were wonderful. The hospitality was great. The rooms looked nice. The prices seemed fair for what you got. They had a lot of services. We liked it a lot. It was affordable for us, but we don't think we need to pay that much at this time, so it wasn't a bargain for us. Nevertheless, the food was excellent. It was wonderful. I had something off their menu. Everything was good. The desserts were good, the main meal was good, and the service was good. The people were very friendly. Not only the residents but all the people that worked there. They were terrific. We had dinner with a couple that lived there. After dinner, they said they were going to a program that was a lecture and they invited us to come with them. We went, and it was a terrific lecture. It was an attorney, and he gave a history of Providence, and it was very interesting. I was impressed by the questions that everybody in the audience raised. It's a very intelligent group. I do not doubt that we would fit in right there. But, as independent as we are, we don't want to give up that now if we can help it. After the lecture was over, we met several other people. One of whom invited us to see her apartment. So we got to see three different places before the tour even took place the next day. It was nice. We saw some empty places that were available to purchase, but we also saw two that were being lived in and how they looked when they were furnished and all. The facilities are well-maintained and it's a beautiful property. It's the only one we had seen, but we were very impressed.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom lived in Laurelmead before she passed. It was very nice, but it was very expensive. It had all the amenities; like an exercise room, a swimming pool, and they showed movies there. There are some reasons I wouldn't want to live in a place like that. One of them was that you had to pay for a certain amount of meals and you had to eat in the dining room, but you'd pay for it. You can pick and choose which meals you wanted, but the people there would usually eat dinner in the dining room. They had a cafe where you can get lunch, but then that counted as one of your meals too. I think it was, like, thirty meals a month that you could eat there. She had a kitchen so she could cook. She had a condo. She owned it herself. In fact, it's just sold. It was a really nice place and it was pretty easy to go for nice walks around there. One of the things I liked about it was that there was no golf course. I don't see why people who don't play golf have to pay for a golf course. I hate that. They had a library. In fact, my mom was the librarian for many years. They have yoga classes and sometimes they'd have concerts. Everyone was super nice. Housekeeping was provided and would come in every two weeks and vacuum and clean. They even had a garden. You can have a little space in the garden to grow whatever you wanted.

I didn't feel comfortable at Laurelmead. It's big. I didn't mesh with the place, but the staff was very accommodating. We saw the pool. They had lectures, movies, and a lot of activities there. The kitchens in the apartments were very poor.

I visited this facility

Laurel Mead had all the activities offered. There was no middle ground. You were either totally dependent on them, or you’re totally dependent on yourself. It would be nice if there was like a kitchen so that you’d be able to cook your own meals. Everybody was very friendly, super nice, and they answered all of our questions. They’ve got a library, they read books together, and go to outings. There’s plenty to do.

I visited this facility

On 25th of July, I'm going down to spend four days at Laurelmead to see how I like it. That's the only place I found in Providence I think that meets my requirements. One meal a day just suits me fine and that's the thing they have that nobody else does. Laurelmead is very close to where my daughter lives. The location is wonderful. When you're walking through the facility, they have beautiful art work on the wall and it is very impressive. Physically, the facility is very pretty. They have a very nice pool. The dining room was very pretty. The facility was very nice looking, physically. The woman who was in charge of visitors was busy that day, so we went around with an assistant; she was fine, but she wasn't terribly good at her job. The rooms were nice and roomy.

About Laurelmead in Providence, Rhode Island

Laurelmead is unlike other retirement communities in Rhode Island—and it has just a handful of peers in all of New England.

Opened in 1994, and located on 23 acres of the historic Butler Hospital campus, which was designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted in the 1880s, Laurelmead Cooperative offers independent living in a bucolic setting, with easy access to all that Providence—and New England—has to offer.

We are a resident-owned, cooperative retirement community. That means we're not part of a national chain or of a complex non-profit life care community. At Laurelmead, the “owners” are shareholders; via resident participation in Policy Committees, and through the election of shareholders to the Laurelmead Board of Directors, residents determine the policies and the management of Laurelmead.

Because we're governed by the people who live here, residents have a deeper investment in their community and more voice in how it is managed. Besides that, our residents have access to an exciting array of activities and events—from performances and movies to education and trips. These enriching opportunities are among the many reasons that Laurelmead residents are happy to be part of our retirement community.

Residents have moved to Laurelmead from many states, including Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, California, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Texas, New York, New Jersey, and Florida.

Our website demonstrates many of the things that set Laurelmead apart from other retirement communities, but the best way to truly understand how we're different is to visit us. We hope to meet you soon.
