I visited this facility

The staff who gave us a tour of The Hickman was very sweet and very pleasant. The place that the independent living is at was older. It has not been redone, so I would not like that. It's more money than what I want to pay right now, and not quite as large of rooms as the other place. The facility was very nice. One part is brand-new, and the other part is old. I didn't like the independent living care area. They're trying everything, but it's just not ideal. They offered for us to be in the skilled nursing as an independent, and that's the brand-new place. It's nice and clean, but the rooms were small. It was more money for smaller rooms that's why I chose against it, even though the location is better for us. The person who gave the tour was very nice, very kind, and did a great job. I saw some of the rooms that they have crafts in.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

We visited a friend/former neighbor here pre-Coved. She had a 2 room apt. in the older part of the building, which looks to have been a large, private home at one time. It was a corner unit with lots of windows in the bedroom and living room and an interior bathroom (no windows). She was comfortable there with all her own furniture around her and family nearby. Visitors had to sign in when entering and leaving. The few staff members we met were friendly. On one occasion her family arranged a private luncheon for our friend's birthday in a small second-floor dining room. That was the only time we ate there. The food was good. It would not be appropriate for me to rate the staff and activities because we were only there for visits of about an hour.

I visited this facility

I toured The Hickman for my mom. I saw an independent apartment, but I believe they have independent and assisted kind of mixed together in the same building. I thought that facility was wonderful. Everybody there seemed very warm. The residents who I saw looked like they were happy. The staff clearly knew the residents. It just had a very warm community kind of feeling. I remember seeing that they have a nice library and game area. They had a full kitchen out in a common area, where people could cook together. They also had an exercise group going. I think there was a physical therapy and occupational therapy on site. This was just at the time when places were opening again from Covid, and they were opening for tours. They said they were preparing to do little group trips to museums or shopping or things like that again.

Provider Response

Michelle, Thank you for the wonderful response and feedback from your tour! The Hickman team works hard to provide the best care and support to our residents.

I visited this facility

I was looking for an apartment, however, The Hickman only offered rooms. I had lunch there and the food was very good. The person who accommodated me was good and knowledgeable. The facility was just fine, there was a patio, and it was homey.

The Hickman was really nice. I liked it. I liked the people there. I had an in-person tour, but it was limited. You can't get all over. Most of the time, we're sitting out on the covered patio in the front. They had a lot of things to show me. They were very thorough. I was impressed that they had no COVID at all because as soon as it broke out, everybody got masked up. They actually answer the phone there, which is nice, unlike where my mother is living now. I was really impressed. They had three floors, and we went to the second floor where my mother would be at if she moved in. They showed me the dining area and the activity area. Everything was kind of spread out because of COVID. There were two people at a table. I didn't see how it would actually look, but they described it to me. They have activities seven days a week all day long, from bingo to lots of stuff. They're slowly bringing it all back in. The room that we went into had a huge window with lots of sunlight. It was really bright in there. It was more of an efficiency than an apartment, and it had a kitchenette, but they give you three meals a day and they always have snacks out. The price included the laundry and the linens. The entrance fee was very reasonable. I like the fact that the lanyard that they wear and push if they need something, it also indicates if they fall down. They don't have to push it if they fall down or pull anything. It rings at the nurse's station. Everything's in a circle, so the nurse's station is around the corner from the room that I was looking at. They take long trips. They have a hair salon and they're looking into getting nails done and massages. They're big into exercising. Before COVID, they had a lot of big parties. The staff was very nice. There wasn't a pressure sell. They will give you a pack laid out with what the next steps are. They showed me a menu, it was nice, and it had a variety of food. They're limited now. They keep the people on the third floor on the third floor, and the people on the second floor on the second floor. It's really clean in there.

My mother-in-law stayed at the assisted living in The Hickman before rehab. The rooms were clean and adequate, and the place was clean. My mother-in-law was getting very settled in and happy there. The staff was very accommodating. The dining area was very clean and the food was good for me, but my mother-in-law didn't love it. They had a book club, they took them on the bus to go shopping, and on trips during the day. The cost was comparative to everyone else.

I visited this facility

The Hickman is a Quaker-affiliated community. A friend of my wife recommended this place to us. Our visit there was very pleasant. It was a good place. We like it. We had lunch there and the food was good. It was an older facility but it seemed to be very comfortable and clean. I like best how well organized and well laid out the facility was. It was just a nice community. It has a number of amenities; however, it is a little far away from here. Nevertheless, location-wise, it is close by the university and it is in the town itself, so it is easy to walk around there. We saw the types of rooms that we might have in the facility. There was a bit of shock on how much we have to downsize, but that would be the case no matter where we went.

I visited this facility

The Hickman was close to where my parents live. Very caring individuals, they took time to talk and listen to what I have to say, and also offered suggestions. The rooms were very nice even though it was an older building. They had a couple of rooms available that time, but they could not hold them for my mom.

I visited this facility

My grandparents have lived in this assisted living facility for about the last three years. Although one has since passed away upon arriving due to natural causes my other grandparent has happily lived there since arriving. The Hickman offers personal apartments for all of its residents which includes dining for all meals and monitoring of its residents in case any problems occur. Along with checkups and meals The Hickman also offers activities and events for the residents to stay active and meet more people in the facility which promotes a much friendlier atmosphere. In case any of the retired residents become injured or sick there is a separate wing of the facility to cater to these individuals with nurses checking up on them making sure their needs are met. The Hickman has been great to my grandparents since they have moved in. I believe that it would be a positive experience for anyone seeking an assisted living facility and I would recommend it.
