The Grove at Washington

My mom is in The Grove at Washington for rehab. She likes it, she said they take good care of her, they are very nice to her, and she has no complaints whatsoever (other than we can't see her, but obviously that is the case at most places with COVID). They brought her in a wheelchair to the front window so that my dad could give her some Valentine's Day gifts through the window, but that has been all. She said the food is good. From the outside it doesn't look that great. It's an older building, but it seemed clean from what I can see when I drop things off. When she was in the hospital for ten days, the hospital never told us she had a bedsore and a stroke. When she went to The Grove they found it. Now the bedsore is gone, and they said the stroke has affected that side of her brain -- the walking part. She's standing now; they didn't want to rush her. They keep in contact with my sister.

Be concerned

This facility has steadily gone downhill since the pandemic. There is nobody allowed in to inspect the facility or check to see if the residents are being cared for properly. My relative suffered and died from severe malnutrition and dehydration because nobody was feeding her or making sure she was drinking enough. Since I wasn't allowed in to check on her, I didn't know what her condition was like. You can't tell anything by looking in the window, which is the only way you can visit. Before the pandemic, my relative got a huge skin tear on her arm. When I asked how it happened, the head nurse didn't know anything about it. I asked to talk to the nurse who bandaged her arm and the head nurse didn't know who that was either. She wasn't able to find out that information either. Aren't facilities supposed to keep track of what the nurses do? What supplies they use and on whom? My relative also fell on many occasions that sent her to the hospital. She broke both hips and had to have them replaced. Any time she was sent to the hospital they said that she was dehydrated and had a UTI. If you love your relative, do NOT send them to The Grove at Washington.

many concerns

This is by far the worst facility I have ever seen. It’s filthy and has an overwhelming smell of urine. The staff is not only unfriendly, they do not understand the basic concept of patient privacy. My loved one had repeated hospitalizations due to dehydration and infections. Both preventable. The staff were easily annoyed by any questions that we asked. If you want your loved one to be clean and in safe hands, avoid this facilty at all costs.

We were satisfied with the Grove at Washington. My father-in-law moved in there, and it was close to where we wanted it to be. We toured it, and everybody seemed to be taken care of. The food looked fine. You could get a wheelchair in the bathroom, the people seemed polite, and PT people were working in the hall, and there’s no problem with that. They always post the menu, and they give them snacks.

Stay away from this facility. The care here is less that expected for your pet much less a loved one. The staff has an "I don't care" attitude. The Dr on call only walks in says hi you look fine and then walks out. We took Dad to the hospital the day after the Dr says he was fine and has now been there for 2 days. The hospital says he could have died from the infection that he has. If you have a loved one who needs physical therapy this is NOT the place to go. They are not equipped to do what is necessary to get patients moving. They do not give meds on time. They do not observe allergy issues either. On several occasions, Apple juice was sent to my Dad when he is allergic and they continue to send it. This place would not be suitable for your pet much less your aging parent.
