Questions about Brereton Manor
Describe the overall population of assisted living residents at Brereton Manor. What is their average age? What are their favorite things to do?
The residents of Brereton Manor range in age from 58 to 96 years old and their abilities and capabilities range accordingly. We have several residents who continue to drive their own cars to appointments, church and family outings. We also have residents who are happiest staying in their rooms reading and watching tv. Brereton is a small, comfortable home and we are able to tailor our services to meet the needs and wishes of our individual residents. We have activities and outings for those who want to venture afield as well as presentations and musical programs that we bring to our residents in their home.
What programs or activities does Brereton Manor offer to enrich residents' well-being?
Brereton Manor's Activities Director has developed a program that can be adapted to meet the needs of the residents with whom she is working. We have learned to meet our residents where they are rather than insist on the residents adapting themselves to our program. Our activities are varied - from the usual crossword puzzles and painting to the more unusual visits from the alpacas who live at a nearby farm. We have programs on owls and apple-butter making, tours of local covered bridges and culinary schools....trying always to choose activities that will entertain and enlighten our residents as well as re-ignite for them interests they may have had before coming to our facility. Brereton also has a weekly "Balance Class," conducted by a PhD-level Physical Therapist who has been developing strengthening programs for the elderly for years. All residents are invited to attend the class at no charge to the.
What places are near Brereton Manor or within walking distance for assisted living residents to enjoy?
Brereton is located in Washington Boro, Lancaster County, smack dab in the middle of some of the most beautiful farm land in our country. There are no shops, stores or points of interest within walking distance for our residents but, to be honest, most of the folks living with us enjoy nothing better than watching the corn grow - which they can do easily from our front porch. Luckily, the hairdresser visits every week (at no additional charge to our residents) and the ice cream truck always makes a stop in the summer time!
What transportation services does Brereton Manor offer to assisted living residents?
For a nominal fee, Brereton Manor will provide transportation to and from medical appointments when family is unable to assist.
What makes the chef or dining program at Brereton Manor exceptional? What kind of menu can assisted living residents expect?
We realize that, for our residents, mealtime is often the most important time of day...that is why we strive to provide meals that are nourishing, healthy and comforting. To that end, we hire cooking staff who not only enjoy and excel at preparing meals, they also are devoted to the lives and well-being of the residents we serve. We prepare meals that tailored to residents on special or restricted diets and also do our best to present special meals or use recipes suggested by our residents or their families. Most of the residents of Brereton Manor have been raised in Lancaster County so we prepare the simple, filling food they have always eaten - a good breakfast in the morning, meat, potato and vegetable at lunch, a lighter supper and an evening snack.

About Brereton Manor
The choices for senior care in Lancaster County seem endless – there are a wide variety of communities located throughout our area and the services they offer range from adult daycare and respite care to skilled nursing and hospice services. There are several residential choices available for seniors needing housing with options for care: “Assisted Living,” “Retirement Home,” and “Nursing Home.”
The staff at Brereton Manor understands the decisions ahead will not be easy. The owner, Bill Boyd, once faced the same dilemma when he was looking at retirement communities for his own parents. Each option seemed to have serious drawbacks so he set a goal to redefine the standard operating procedure of elder care.
Bill wanted his parents to feel they were living in their own home while they received the care they needed to be assisted with the tasks of daily living. Instead of a large campus with sprawling hallways and a hotel like an environment that he found at most retirement communities; Brereton Manor has a quiet living room, a comfortable TV room, a community dining room and a kitchen that looks similar to his parent’s kitchen. In other words, Brereton Manor feels like home. There are 25 bedrooms scattered throughout so that no resident of Brereton is far from any common area.
Quality Senior Care at an Affordable Price
The quality of care is just as unique as the Brereton’s floor plan. Bill wants care that any member of his family deserves especially since he bought Brereton to take care of his parents. Generally, there are 25 residents and there is 25 well-trained staff to care for the residents. Every effort is made to bring the necessary care and treatment to each resident instead of sending a resident to another facility should their health decline.
If you’re looking for retirement homes, personal care services, senior day care, or respite care (rehabilitation), Brereton Manor may be exactly what you are looking for. If you are looking for assisted living, rehab hospitalization or skilled nursing care Brereton Manor might offer answers. Don’t hesitate to contact Brereton Manor to experience the difference we can make in your loved one’s life.

Family owned and operated for nearly 50 years, Brereton Manor is a small personal care facility committed to providing quality, loving care for seniors. We are located in Washington Boro, near Lancaster, PA and right in the middle of Pennsylvania’s magnificent farming country. Our intimate facility is located on six beautiful country acres and is surrounded by corn fields and pastures that are home to the horses and ponies that live on the Brereton Manor site. There are walking paths and plenty of outdoor rest areas that offer views of our property and the surrounding countryside while providing the opportunity for vital outdoor exercise to our residents. The Brereton garden supplies us with wonderful fresh vegetables throughout the growing season and the horses that are stabled here are available to the children and grandchildren of our residents with appropriate notice.
We are proud to be a premier elder care facility and to guarantee the very best personal and medical attention for your loved ones. We are fully staffed with licensed practical nurses as well as professionally trained caregivers. A staff physician and registered nurse are always on call and we work with contracted agencies to bring the very best medical care – occupational and physical therapy, dermatology, podiatry and, when needed, hospice – to our residents here at their home. We encourage those who live with us to maintain their independence through a variety of social activities and interactions with other residents.
What Makes Us Special
We are surrounded by a beautiful six acre horse farm, and our home-cooked, organic meals are sourced from local farms. Our residents are able to age in place here with a better than 1-1 staff to resident ratio.
