Describe the overall population of assisted living residents at Gracious Living Estates. What is their average age? What are their favorite things to do?

Gracious Living Estates has a widely diverse group of residents. From age sixty-one to one hundred one, our age range is quite broad, with the majority landing in their late eighties to early nineties. With this diverse age range comes a varying set of interests. There are many planned activities at GLE, with Bingo and Exercise class being the staple favorites. Bingo is offered two times a week, with one afternoon and one-morning session to meet the needs, and fit into the schedules, of all our residents. Our residents may participate in exercise classes, and they may also utilize our age/level appropriate exercise area on their own. Over half of our residents visit the multipurpose room each weekday to participate in a gentle chair exercise session before lunch. When the scheduled activities are over, many of our residents enjoy roaming through the halls looking for neighbors to visit with during quieter hours of the day.

What programs or activities does Gracious Living Estates offer to enrich residents' well-being?

GLE offers a dynamic, packed activities program. Participation and enjoyment are highest priorities, with ongoing resident feedback. Activities strive to incorporate different medias, areas of the building, sensory stimulation, and promote overall well-being and quality of life. Newcrafts and games are hosted weekly in our Multipurpose Room, along with exercise classes. These crafts and games are picked via resident request and lseasonality and holidays. In warm weather, activities are often outdoors, on our shaded patio. Our garden club has been amazing, reaping scrumptious tomatoes, lettuce, basil, cucumbers, and more. When seasons shift, residents can gather at the fire ringfor Smores and stories. The cooking club creates sweet treats to enjoy and donate to a local food bank, as our residents still make a difference, age be darned. Our activities create purpose, incorporating thinking, movement, and multi-sensory stimulation. And, our residents are too busy having fun.

What places are near Gracious Living Estates or within walking distance for assisted living residents to enjoy?

Gracious Living Estates is a cozy facility, nestled on the outskirts of the town of Montrose. Within walking distance is a very popular local restaurant and pizzeria. This establishment has also been kind to our residents and their family members, making many accommodations to meet the needs of those with mobility limitations and assistive devices. GLE is incredibly fortunate to have a full-service salon on-site, offering everything from hair to nails to skin care. Our licensed beautician has a fabulous disposition and works very well with all our residents to meet their needs. Being in the country, away from the other attractions in town, does have its benefits. The surrounding area is very peaceful, and the residents can roam around the outside of the building without the interference of noisy or dangerous traffic. Often residents who choose to walk outside return with reports of the many bird species, deer families, squirrels, and rabbits that they encountered.

What transportation services does Gracious Living Estates offer to assisted living residents?

Gracious Living Estates works with the local transportation agency to schedule personal, as well as group, outings, and appointments. Our residents are free to call the agency themselves and schedule trips within the two surrounding counties, and staff can also schedule these trips for them individually. GLE is also close to the local hospital and can utilize the Montrose Minute Men to help transport residents with extra care needs to and from medical appointments.

What makes the chef or dining program at Gracious Living Estates exceptional? What kind of menu can assisted living residents expect?

Our exceptional home-cooked dining provides meals that are healthy, yet familiar and delicious. Adjustments are made seasonally to incorporate fresh produce and holiday related favorites: • Hot breakfast is always offered with the alternative of fruit and yogurt or cereal. Lunch is our largest meal, with a warm, full, and colorful plate including proper portions of proteins, starches, fruits, and vegetables. There is also an alternative that varies daily. Dinner is often a bit lighter than lunch, for more comfortable sleep. This meal can be hot or cold and is also offered with an alternative of cereal, fruit and yogurt, or a sandwich. There is an evening snack delivered directly to wind down and get comfortable for the evening. On a practical basis, the kitchen never really closes—If you are hungry, you will get delicious food. Finally, our meals have been reviewed and optimized by a dietitian especially attuned to senior needs. Schedule a meal to taste GLE’s delicious nutrition.

What safety features or security measures does Gracious Living Estates offer to assisted living residents?

Gracious Living Estates keeps our residents safe with a thorough video surveillance and alarm system in place. The video cameras focus closely on all entrances and exits, with monitors at four stations that staff check frequently. We also have an alarm system that rings when someone enters or exits the building. It also has an automated voice that identifies the exact door that was used so staff can both look at the monitors and go to the exact location quickly.

How does Gracious Living Estates keep residents' families informed about their loved ones?

When new residents enter GLE, they immediately have their important information filed into a binder that is kept in a locked area. We also continually log in new information, as applicable. This includes behavioral and incident forms, as well as personal care logs. During any shift, caregivers can record any concerning or new behaviors and care needs in this binder. This provides an excellent way to monitor any resident changes. At any time, family members can call or come in to ask about their loved ones, and the binder can be accessed for a briefing. This binder system is important, but good communication is all about openness and frequency. We work very hard to communicate, well and often, with full encouragement for loved ones to call us, a lot. And, we certainly call out, whenever there is a need to do so.

What is the care staff-to-resident ratio at Gracious Living Estates during daytime and nighttime hours?

Gracious Living Estates makes a point to staff caregivers adequately for our resident base. Currently, we average around a 1 to 6 ratio daytime and a 1 to 10 ratio at night. These levels are the right levels to allow our caregivers to provide the proper care and assistance needed to help our residents, and these ratios vastly exceed state-mandated levels.

If Gracious Living Estates accepts dogs or cats, what indoor/outdoor areas can they enjoy?

Although GLE currently doesn’t allow residents to bring their four-legged friends from home to live in their personal rooms, we are pet-friendly, with a variety of therapy dogs who regularly visit and fill the community with ear-to-ear (human) grins. We also allow family members to bring their loved ones' pets for a visit, as long as there are documented up-to-date vaccinations. Once pets are in our system, they are welcome to be in our building, leashed, and to visit common areas such as the living room and multipurpose room. Visiting animals can enter personal rooms by invitation only, as some residents may not want furry visitors. Animals are welcome to roam outside the building on a leash with their owners, whether on the patio or on our 25 gently sloping acres.

What ongoing senior care training does the staff receive?

The staff at Gracious Living Estates are enrolled in several different training programs throughout the year. GLE provides ongoing opportunities for training in the areas of CPR, AED, first aid, insulin administration (medication technicians only), fall prevention, lifting and ambulation assistance, fire safety and prevention, and medication administration (medication technicians only).

What safety features or security measures does Gracious Living Estates provide to protect residents who wander?

As detailed above, Gracious Living Estates utilizes a detailed security system with video surveillance at each entrance and exit, along with an automated voice alarm that identifies the precise door being accessed. GLE has very successfully worked with our residents with wandering issues. Along with shift debriefings, there is a shift binder where important happenings and changes are recorded so all staff members stay completely current. This allows each shift to understand how wandering residents behaved prior to their arrival. This information is invaluable because it allows them to prepare accordingly—A resident who wandered for the majority of the previous shift may be very tired and need extra fluids, whereas a resident who slept through the previous shift may be very active upon waking and need to be checked on more frequently. Finally, residents with wandering issues are known, and staff watches their movements accordingly.

About Gracious Living Estates

Gracious Living Estates is a 65-bed Personal Care Home in Montrose, PA. It has faithfully served the seniors of Northeast Pennsylvania since 1998. GLE meets all of the food, shelter, and personal needs of its Residents.

GLE’s unit mix is roughly:
  • 1/3rd Privates
  • 1/3rd Semi-Private Deluxes
  • 1/3rd Semi-Privates Unit types

​While the majority of GLE Residents are fully mobile, a reasonable number need partial assistance with mobility or utilize wheelchairs. GLE is fully and easily accessible for all levels of mobility. Especially for Resident safety (from falls), the majority of GLE Residents receive bathing assistance.

GLE’s food is delicious and nutritious—And very flexible. Our augmented continental breakfasts, along with health-related menu flexibility, demonstrate our devotion to our Residents. GLE has an enormous Activity Room and a similarly oversized Great Room. There is also an Exercise Area, on-site Beauty Salon, and twenty-four (24) gorgeous, gently sloping acres—with visiting families of deer, wild turkeys, and red foxes.

There is no need to drive, there is no dependence on friends and/or family, there is no dependence on outside commercial or community services…GLE gets its Residents where they need to go. ​GLE is a Personal Care Home, colloquially providing what most other states call “assisted living.” Most simply put, we serve those with any need of help on ADL’s (Activities of Daily Living). Some Residents don’t want to cook, clean, and do laundry. Others may have impaired mobility, (earlier stages of) dementia, or other concerns. Of course, in general, we are not a SNF (nursing home). But, rather than speculate, please contact GLE with any questions if a Resident or prospective Resident is a good bit for GLE’s services.
