I visited this facility

I like Country Meadows of Mechanicsburg the best, and I think they have what I am looking for. The only thing is they have a bigger apartment than I want and they only have a one-bedroom studio. They have two bedrooms, but they're locked in. They don't have enough of them, so I don't want to rent one that's bigger than what I need and I don't want to downsize to something smaller than what I need. The lady gave me the impression that there's no hope in the near future to get one of those because they're rented. They don't have very many of them. That's the only problem with them, but I like them. It's a good place with a good reputation. It's not their fault that they don't have the size of apartment that I want. They have the same amenities. The food, the meals, the snack bars, a place where you watch movies, exercise equipment, and a nice dining room. They don't have swimming pools, golf clubs, and all that stuff, which I don't even bother to look at. It's not a big place, but they don't have that many extras and that's what I'm looking for. They gave me food to take home with me. It was just delicious. They gave me some homemade soup and it was really good. The facility looked really clean.

Decisions about care for our loved ones are hard and Country Meadows is not only providing excellent care for my Mom, but made the entire process easy for our family. Mom transitioned to Country Meadows on short notice from a rehab facility. The Marketing Director, A.M., and her colleagues were outstanding to work with at every step and went above and beyond to assist w/the transition. My Mom (who previously never spent a night alone) has been there 3 days and we are continually impressed at the management and care. Mom is happy w/her caregivers, the overall staff responsiveness and the food. The facility is clean, well-maintained, and the staff is professional, courteous and seems genuinely committed to their work and the residents. There was already an incident (things happen) - a fire alarm in the wee hours caused by steam from a faulty humidifier - but I can honestly say they managed the incident w/rationality and sensibility and the handling of this minor incident suggests they have good management in place. For us, this has been a welcome change from very disappointing care at both a hospital and a rehab facility where we were all regularly frustrated. Mom's physical and emotional well-being has already improved in the short time she has been at Country Meadows which I attribute to the positive and genuinely healing environment.

Provider Response

Thank you very much for sharing you rexperience with Country Meadows. Our co-workers keep residents' needs and happiness at the forefront of everything they do, and they often consider residents to be extended family members. We are very proud of our West Shore team and so happy to learn that your experiences have been positive. Thank you for giving us the honor of caring for your mom.

After a lengthy hospital stay I was advised that it would be best for my wife to be placed in an assisted living facility. After searching I decided on Country Meadows of Mechanicsburg. I wasn’t sure if it was the best choice but my wife and I soon found that it was. Everyone at Country Meadows, administrative, nursing, maintenance, cleaning, kitchen, etc always treated us with respect and a caring attitude. If we needed anything we were never told that we would need to see someone else the individual we asked would either help us or find someone who could. It’s not easy having to place a loved one in assisted living but everything about Country Meadows made the experience more comfortable. I would highly recommend Country Meadows to anyone looking for a caring environment for their loved one.

Provider Response

Thank you for sharing your experience with our team. We are fortunate to have great co-workers who treat each and every resident as a family member. Co-workers routinely go above and beyond to exceed expectations, and we couldn't be more proud of them. Thank you for validating your positive experience, and thank you for choosing Country Meadows. Welcome to our family!

I visited this facility

We are going to use Country Meadows of Mechanicsburg for my mother. It has been a family-owned business for over 50 years now. So the stability of one ownership is very encouraging. We went there and we all liked it. It's very friendly. They call their patients neighbors, and we like that. It's a little dated, but it doesn't matter. They're very caring. My mother can be in her room, but it's still close to where everything's at. It's also convenient for the three of us to be able to visit her. We would like a private room. I don't think it's going to work well with Mom having a better roommate. They have several floors. We were not able to get the room we looked at, which we wanted because it has a half wall, which made it more private than just a one-room. The staff who accommodated me was very friendly, informative, and thoughtful. She answered all our questions. All of us sat at the table for an hour talking to the lady. The other thing about the food is that they give them a choice and they show it to them because people with dementia need extra care.

Provider Response

Welcome to the Country Meadows family! We look forward to getting to know your mother. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our campus Executive Director with any questions or concerns. We are here to support families as well as their loved ones.

My overall visit to Country Meadows Retirement Communities was good. I like this place the best. It fits the best for my mom. The staff was very nice. They were all very pleasant and very helpful. They would return phone calls right away, so that was good. Their rooms were a nice size for what she needed in personal care. I saw the residents having a group session in the one large room that they were sitting in. There were memory things on a white board, and they were engaged. They had a nice little courtyard area that you could walk around in that was all secure. They had places to do your hair and stuff. The menu looked good, but I did not try it.

Provider Response

Thank you, Aileen! We appreciate the feedback. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do. We look forward to serving your family!

My father has been at Country Meadows of Mechanicsburg for three to four months now. It's very family-oriented. They take care of them very well. He's got a living room and a separate bedroom, so it's almost like an apartment. They also have the two-bedroom and one room, and they come furnished. They have board games, puzzles, and different rooms in the facility to sit and talk with other guests. They have a courtyard and a barber. Depending upon your skill set, you can leave the building and then come back. It's not a locked-down place. They have several dining rooms in there to eat.

Provider Response

Thank you for entrusting Country Meadows with your father. Our residents enjoy a full lifestyle with opportunities to enjoy entertainment, outings, activities and social gatherings. We believe that a high quality of life is key to good health. You're right; it feels like family around here, because we do consider ourselves to be one very big family! And we are one of the few 100% family-owned and -managed senior care providers in the country. Again, thank you for sharing your father with our team.

This facility is well taken care of, maintenance is performed in a timely manner. Staff are very nice and seam caring most of the time. The cleaning staff does a fairly good job in and out of rooms. There are several activity rooms and are well used by the residents. Management and nursing stay on top of things. I frequently get calls on mom's condition. My mother for the most part is very happy with the food and the dinning facility is nice and well kept. All-in-all I and my mom are very happy with this facility. Everything is on one floor for the assisted living which makes it great for the older community.

Provider Response

Thank you for sharing your experience with Country Meadows. Stay safe and well!

My mom is now in Country Meadows of Mechanicsburg and she's in the assisted living or personal care. She hasn't been there more than a couple of months. They moved the room because when she first got in, they were rehabilitating her from a pelvis fracture. She was in a different room now which is just around the corner from the old one. The community looks nice. They give you a better choice of food and the little campus and the courtyards are pretty. I seem to see a lot of the communities now are a little short on staffing, and I think the Country Meadows may have been short on staff a few times. Other than that, they do a great job. Her room's square footage isn't that big, but it's roomy enough for her. She seems happy with it. They also have a sheet of activities that I could find online that they sent me. I know my mom has plenty of activities. There's a church or Bible studies, there's a van that can take you places if you need to, and they have different kinds of activities, like bocce ball and bingo. It's an easy location if you know where it's at. It's also centrally located to where my sister and my two brothers live. The whole place looks nice from the outside. They do a good job on the inside too. Aesthetically, it looks good.

Provider Response

We are thrilled to read that your mother is enjoying living at Country Meadows. Our Dynamic Living teams offer so many opportunities for residents to participate in activities, enjoy entertainment, go on outings and socialize with friends and neighbors. Residents can choose just how busy they want to be! Thank you for sharing your positive experiences.

Every member of your staff was engaged, leaning in, and listening to the needs of our family , as well as the wishes of the patient (my god mother) with compassion and dignity. I would also like to recognize the remarkable care provided by the Hospice team of professionals for the extraordinary care provided at the end of our dear family members life. it is reassuring to know that Country Meadows is part of our local community.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The past 60 days has been an overwhelming journey for our family as we navigated our parents hospitalizations, rehabilitations, moves from an independent living facility to assisted living at Country Meadows, and the eventual death of our father. It’s not an understatement to say that the staff at Country Meadows was outstanding every step of the way. The marketing team, the transportation drivers, the nursing staff, the kitchen personnel and maintenance staff are professional and kind in the way they interact with both residents and family. When it became clear that our father’s care needs were more at the level of a skilled nursing facility, Allie and Danielle worked with us to come up with a plan combining private duty and hospice care to allow him to return to Country Meadows from the rehab facility. His last week of life was spent with his wife rather than alone in another new facility. Just a week later, our mother was ready to move to a single room, and once again, the staff were on hand to arrange everything. We are thankful to everyone who is a part of the team.

Provider Response

We are very sorry for the loss of your father. Thank you for allowing us the honor and privilege to care for him. We appreciate you very much and will do our best to help your mother, and your family, through this difficult time. Thank you for your kind words about our team. They are incredible.

My parents are in Country Meadows of Mechanicsburg independent living facility, but they have assisted living and memory care as well. They seem to like it, but it's very expensive. It's a nice place. The staff is very good. They seem to like the food. They have bingo, cards, entertainment, people come in and entertain them, movies, and crafts.

My parents are in Country Meadows of Mechanicsburg. It's very nice, very clean, and very friendly. They both like their rooms, they love the food, they love the staff, and my mom kept saying over and over again how impressed she was that all of the staff members know every resident's name. They are in a large studio. They have an exercise room, a training center, a chapel, a beauty salon, a very nice dining room with cloth napkins and tablecloths, and they have 24/7 access to coffee, tea, juice, ice cream, and fresh fruits. They're in the independent living section. We tried their cookies and they were really good.

Provider Response

Thank you for sharing your experience. Next time you visit, please join us for a meal. We promise it will be ever better than that cookie!

Country Meadows was nice. It would have been my second choice, but the managers just seemed uppity, not down to earth.

Provider Response

Thank you for your visit. Everyone on our management team is very warm and compassionate. In fact, we find those traits to be some of the most important in serving seniors, and we specifically seek co-workers with those qualities. There may have been other items going on behind the scene which took away our co-workers’ attention when you stopped by. Please consider giving us another chance and stop in for a visit again soon.

We visited Country Meadows of Mechanicsburg. We didn't have any problems at all. Everybody was very helpful. They gave us brochures and fact sheets. They took us on a great tour through the area. The rooms were very nice, but we weren't interested in shared rooms. We wanted at minimum a studio. It was the closest to us because we live right off Trindle. They did have activities.

Provider Response

Thank you for your note and for your visit. Please check back with our team frequently as our open apartments change daily. Our team works very, very hard to make Country Meadows an attractive, engaging and safe place for every resident and their guests. We hope to see you again soon.

Other

I work as a caregiver and frequently have clients that live in country meadows. I have had very poor experiences with the staff. There have been many times that I've been working with the staff and they have pulled me aside and talked poorly of my clients. A few months ago I had a client who passed out while on the toilet. The PCA who was assisting me told me to stand on the other side of the bathroom (as if I didn't know what I was doing) and tried to pick my client up on her own while she was unable to hold herself up. Anyone who knows this lady is aware that she is a two person assist. In the process the PCA dropped my client and slammed her head off of the wall. I mentioned going to get the nurse because my client was clearly hurt and the PCA told me absolutely not. There was no need for a nurse. She tried picking her up a second time and was able to do it. She threw my client in her wheel chair and pushed her out into her room. My shift was quickly approaching the end and I mentioned having someone sit with my nearly unconscious client. She told me no one had time for this and that someone would check on her when they had the time too. In conclusion I would not recommend country meadows to ANYBODY.

Provider Response

Thank you for this note. Your concerns were shared with management in April, and investigated in a timely manner. No one ever deserves to be treated in a disrespectful manner and this is not the culture we have at Country Meadows. Our goal is to provide the best quality care and support for all residents in the programs we provide, and make every effort to care for them as long as possible.

Should you have additional concerns or observations, please call our anonymous 24-hour toll-free compliance hotline at 888.470.3376. Thank you very much.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My parents moved in at Country Meadows about 3 years ago. We were very satisfied and that's why we decided to stay there. They are very happy with the staff and with the activities that are involved. They were in an independent-living and they had 2 rooms and recently moved into assisted living and they have just 1 room now. Having just one room met their needs so that was fine. They're very happy with the quality of the food and the variety. They said if the portions were small, they just ask for more and they could get additional. They're not quite perfect but pretty close. I like the fact that they can go from one type of care to another just staying in the same community there. I would say the sanitation is excellent. They keep it looking very, very good.

Provider Response

Thank you for your kind words. Our team works very, very hard to make Country Meadows an attractive, engaging and safe place for every resident and their guests. We are thrilled that your parents enjoy living in our community as well as a very important amenity--the food! Our chef and dining team work hard to use healthy, local ingredients whenever possible to create a variety of delicious recipes. We hope that you can join your parents for a meal from time to time! Again, thank you for your note, and for allowing us the privilege to care for your parents.

Very disappointed in the care my father received while living at CM in the dementia unit. Lack of proper training of the PCA's, short staffed, kitchen and dining area for the residents very dirty, lost clothing and personal belongings, and the list goes on. One major factor one should consider before making a decision as to whether or not to reside at this facility is there is NO skilled nursing care. If you want your loved one to live there for the rest of their life, consider a facility with skilled nursing. Once you reach a certain level of care, especially in the dementia unit, your loved one will have to be moved to another facility with skilled nursing. This should be brought to the attention of potential residents/families who are looking for a place to call home. County Meadows did not meet our expectations in the care of our loved one.

Provider Response

We are sorry you are disappointed. At Country Meadows in Mechanicsburg, we offer independent living, personal care, memory support and restorative care services. Our goal is to provide the best quality care and support for all residents in the programs we provide and make every effort to care for them as long as possible. To accomplish this we have developed a strong network of healthcare partners, including hospice and home health agencies that can provide additional needed services. However, when a resident’s needs surpass what we can safely offer, we do provide referrals to organizations that offer a higher level of care. We are truly sorry if this information was not clearly explained to your family when choosing Country Meadows.

Country Meadows is very proud of the high level of training provided to our Personal Care Associates, which exceeds the requirements in Pennsylvania. So that we can look into your other concerns, please call our confidential hotline at 888.470.3376. Thank you for allowing us to care for your father. Best wishes to your family.

I am a friend or relative of resident

I would first like to start by saying that Country Meadows is a beautiful facility. But, as most of us know, beauty is only skin deep. Since selling their home and moving to Country Meadows in October of 2012, my grandparents have had nothing but sub-par treatment from the staff. My grandmother is in Independent Living and my grandfather resides in the Alzheimer’s/dementia unit, being unable to care for himself anymore. My grandmother pays out roughly $7,000 a month for both she and my grandfather to stay there. For that kind of money, we expect the best care for my grandfather. We understand that nobody is perfect and that mistakes and accidents happen. We also understand that there are a lot of residents and that the dementia unit is understaffed and underpaid. What we don’t understand is when there are accidents and mistakes and my grandfather is receiving poor care, but all we are given from the staff are excuses and snide remarks from the CNAs. No one is willing to say sorry or take responsibility. Or take corrective action and work with my grandmother to make changes or improvements based on her needs and desires for my grandfather’s care. When mistakes repeatedly keep happening, some much more serious than others (such as my grandfather being sent on an outing with no underwear on, and then he had an accident) and my grandmother has meetings with the directors and other higher-ups about her concerns and still nothing gets done or resolved and poor excuses are still being given, then frustrations and tempers run high. These people are in charge of caring for and the safety of helpless dementia patients. Yet they brush off and disregard loved ones’ concerns, needs and basic wishes. It is their way or the highway. To me, that is not good care or cooperation. Over the course of the year and a half that my grandparents have been there, there have been numerous confrontations with staff members. Now, both of my grandparents are being evicted from Country Meadows on the grounds that my grandmother harassed staff members. She has never done such things. She is an 80-year-old woman with a heart condition. She is one of the most kind and selfless people that I know. She has high expectations at times, but she has never harassed anyone there. She has never threatened or used profane or derogatory language towards any staff member there. And yet she and my grandfather, who is helpless and does not know what is going on, are being given 30 days to pack their stuff and leave. These people are heartless and cruel. Do not send your elderly loved ones to live here.

Provider Response

We’re very sorry that you had a negative experience with us. As a provider of senior living services ranging from independent living to personal care, memory support, and restorative care, our greatest concern is to provide cutting edge, quality care services to our residents. However, when a resident’s needs surpass what we can safely offer, we provide referrals to trusted organizations that offer a higher level of care and can help with the transition.

Country Meadows prides itself on hiring caring, qualified staff members whose number one concern is our residents. We have a staffing ratio higher than the state requires, and we utilize a rigorous pre-employment screening process to ensure we have the best caregivers working with our residents. We have many experts on our staff to provide guidance in programs for persons with Alzheimer’s disease, restorative care, physical therapy and more.

We have received your letter and appreciated the opportunity to talk to your family directly since your post. Thank you for allowing us to care for your parents and our best wishes to your family.

My four sisters and I went to Country Meadows for my mother. This is one of the places that stood out for us. Their rooms were nice and very clean. Their food was great. We had a complimentary meal there and it was very nice. However, my mom is kind of a country girl and Country Meadows is more of a residential area. We thought that she would be more comfortable in a rural type of setting rather than this one.

The facility is run by outgoing and kind individuals, and there are a lot of daily activities for the residents but my grandfather has become ill several times as a direct result of the actions of the staff. He has contracted C Diff on multiple occasions due to treatment while a resident, even after repeated warnings from an outside RN.

Provider Response

Dear Central PA Living:

Thank you for your kind words about our Country Meadows co-workers. You are absolutely correct"”they truly do care about our residents. I frequently see some co-workers come in on their days off simply to visit residents or help with activities.

I am sorry to learn that your grandfather has contracted C Diff. As you probably know, C Diff tends to affect older adults in hospitals or long-term care settings and cannot be eliminated by using alcohol sanitizers alone. The illness typically occurs after the use of antibiotic medications. Country Meadows has procedures in place to properly handle illnesses that arise in communities such as ours. To combat C-diff, we employ special methods to dispose of garbage and practice very specific laundry protocols that include washing the affected person's laundry separately in very high temperatures. When necessary, our co-workers also wear protective items including gloves, gowns and masks.

Please feel free to contact me directly so we may discuss the details of your grandfather's illness. If needed, we will be happy to provide additional protections to help him avoid a repeat illness.

I look forward to speaking with you.

Everything was wonderful! In fact, we wish my mother- in-law would've gone there. But right now, she's not ready and we can't do anything about it. We really liked the place! We know several people in the facility and they all love it. It's a neat and beautiful place, and they say the food there is wonderful, too. Well, we didn't get to taste it, but the people I know that live there says it is.

I was very impressed with the very clean facility and the bright and uplifting decor. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The staff was patient and kind. I could tell they like their jobs. The facility was well organized as the residents understood their recreational activities and schedule. Residents seemed to be happy interacting with each other. When I asked a resident their opinion of Country Meadows they explained it was much better than some of the places their peers attend and they are respected by the staff. Another resident told me the staff make a deliberate effort to understand the needs and wants of the residents. The staff appeared helpful to the residents and were quick to answer residents requests for service. Residents also appeared to be clean and well-kept. The outside of the building was beautiful and the greens were well tended. The building itself was painted nicely. I felt welcomed as a volunteer and would return to Country Meadows.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mom has been a resident of Country Meadows for almost two years, living in their independent living building. She is 88 years old and in relatively good health. Her apartment is lovely, clean, and safe. The two meals a day which are provided are, for the most part, nutritious, appealing, and easy for her to consume. Transportation is provided twice a week to the supermarket, drugstore, and a small, local mall. Each trip is one hour, not quite adequate if a resident wants to shop for a pair of shoes or a gift. There are not really enough activities to stimulate an active mind. Most of the movies are old. The crafts offered are infrequent. There are very few large-print books in their collection, and bus trips to the library are infrequent. Outside speakers are infrequently invited there. The evenings are long and boring for many residents and, with supper served at 4:45, the evening is long and lonely. Sunday's are given over to visiting clergy. If a resident is not Christian or not religious, Sunday is just so lonely! Thus, Country Meadows is clean and safe, with some caring staff; but, it is definitely not stimulating.
