I visited this facility

The tour experience I had at Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living was good. The apartments were average. The facility looked well maintained. We didn't get a chance to eat there, but I know that the day we were there, they were serving liver and onions. My wife said, "I don't think we want to eat," because she doesn't like liver and onions. The dining area was nice. The staff that gave the tour was not as sociable as the ones at the other facilities I went to, but the staff did a good job of showing us the facility. The facility just didn't seemed near as vibrant. The people that we saw there didn't seem to interact with one another in the public spaces.

We were impressed by Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living. Everyone was really helpful and friendly. People were going out of their way to say hello. The apartment seemed to be a good size. The facilities were well-kept. They provide your meals, do your sheets and towels, and do light housekeeping. They have a lot of activities. They have card games, board games, day trips to places, and sometimes the places come in there for a concert or something. They have all kinds of things. The dining room looked like a nice restaurant.

The staff members at Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living were very friendly and informative. Everything was very neat. They had me there for lunch. They were getting new furniture, so things were being set up. The rooms were very nice. You have your living room, bedroom, bathroom, and a small kitchen area. You get all your meals there, so you don't have to do any cooking. The food was very good. You have quite a few choices. If you don't want what they're having, they have other options for you. So I thought it was very good.

Provider Response

We're happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit, Linda! Thank you for your review and we hope to be of service to you again in the future.

I felt pretty comfortable visiting Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living. They gave me a lot of information that was very helpful. The rooms were all very nice and very modern (some of them seemed a little small to me though). The dining area was very nice and also felt comfortable. The food was excellent. We enjoyed everything about it.

Provider Response

Hi Ed, thanks for your review of Sterling Heights. We're happy to hear you enjoyed your visit!

Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living was absolutely beautiful. They have so many amenities. They have chefs and they have snacks all day. They have a lot of group activities. The building itself is like a hotel. The hallways are very wide. They can accommodate scooters, wheelchairs, whatever you need. There's no medical staff onsite, but there is a managerial staff there 24/7. I would want to live there. The staff during the tour was very good. She was very professional and very knowledgeable, and she checked in with me a couple of times. It just wasn't affordable for my mother. She showed me rooms that were furnished and unfurnished. It's an absolutely beautiful place. The staff seemed very personable. They were there to help everybody. It was a very nice place.

We toured Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living. It was awesome. It was warm. The person who was representing the community was very sincere about what she had to say about the community. We saw a number of residents there. We saw all the facilities and the amenities that they offer. They were beautifully appointed. They had many choices of amenities that would fit, I think, almost any need. They had exercise rooms, they had game rooms, and they had all kinds of activities, trips, and nights out. The grounds were absolutely exquisite. It was very peaceful. It was a warm atmosphere as far as the people were concerned that we met, both employees and residents, and everyone was very welcoming. There was not a thing I could say that was negative. The dining area was very nice, and they explained that you have choices. The meals are prepared by chef, and they give you a variety of choices. They have their main meal in the middle of the day, and then breakfast, and what they call supper, which are lighter meals. It sounds as though they would offer just about anything that anybody could hope for. The upkeep and maintenance were outstanding.

Provider Response

Thank you for your kind words about Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living, Katherine. We look forward to your next visit!

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad is saying in Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living. He's been there since the day it opened, which is like nine years now. We have no complaints with them. They take care of him. The ladies all love him. They check on him and stuff when we're not available. They feed him three times a day. They clean his room, so we're good. Sometimes he forgets to eat a meal, but they always check on him. If he missed a meal, they'd go and get him something. I eat there occasionally with him, and the food is no problem. They have all kinds of things going on all the time, like they do bean beanbag baseball and all kinds of things. Not necessarily that he participates in them anymore, but they have lots of things and field trips. They have festivities. They do New Year's Eve parties, and they celebrate everything. We checked into other places, and he is getting the value for what he pays for. I would be thrilled if I could afford it when I get to that age.

Provider Response

Charlotte, thank you for your kind words and this wonderful review! We're so pleased to hear the staff is able to give you peace of mind knowing your dad is being well looked after and having fun with all the activities we have to offer.

The apartments and common spaces are great. It's the only independent living facility in the area that has outdoor spaces with each apartment. Housekeeping good. The main problem is the food. The website states "our executive chef and culinary team create homemade meals from scratch three times each day...". And that "snacks and beverages are available any time...". The food is terrible. I have eaten there to see for myself and it is not prepared from scratch, it is often not what is on the scheduled menu, it is usually not hot, there is often not an alternative to the main selection (promised), there is not a "culinary team". The exception to the rule is a good meal. The management has changed at least three times in the last year. Evidently there is a corporate problem. I would guess that covid is a factor, but reviews from pre-covid dates indicate that there was a problem before covid. It's a shame because the facility is beautiful and the people who work there seem to really care about the residents. But if you live somewhere and eat there everyday, the food should be more than average; it should be excellent. The photos on the website of the food spread are a joke. If you don't care about food, it's a great place to live.

Mom will move into Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living. We toured it last month. Just about everything was nice, it's beautiful, it looked very comfortable, and it was very welcoming when we came in. I liked that there are call bells in every room and someone's there 24 hours a day. Even though it's independent, it's still nice to have that understanding, comfort for my mother, and knowing that someone is there, should you need anything. The people were all overly friendly. They have a lot of group activities. They have a movie theater right on site. They show movies several times a week. They have all kinds of activities scheduled all the time. My mom particularly likes to walk, and they have a walking group to go for walks every day. There are three meals a day and there's always coffee, there's always beverages for them if they want it. They just constantly have activities going on. The dining room was beautiful, perfect. It was very spacious, very warm, and welcoming.

I went to Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living to visit a friend. It was a good place. The rooms were nice, and the staff was polite, attentive, and pleasant. It was Thanksgiving, so they did a nice food presentation. The dining area was very nice, too. The place looked pretty well kept. They have a bus and activities for the residents.

My dad will be moving into Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living. He liked that the hallways were large because some of the other facilities, hallways were really small, and he didn't like that. He liked that the hallways were really large, he got the first floor, and he's able to bring his dog, so he's happy about that. The staff that showed us around did very well. He did a good job showing us around. My dad got a complimentary meal and he was happy with that. The food was good. There is a courtyard, and he has his own private entrance because he's on the first floor.

Provider Response

Hi Diane, we are very happy to have provided you and your dad with such a positive experience! And we love dogs so we understand how thats a huge win! We're excited that Sterling Heights is earning a new member of the family! And if you ever have questions please be sure to reach out!

My grandmother recently moved out of Sterling Heights after several years. Unfortunately, she needs 24 hour care. She always considered Sterling her home and will miss it. I highly recommend Sterling to all who are looking for senior living. Thank you to Chris and Julie, the Managers. We could not have asked for a better set of Managers. Always greeted every time I visited and asked how everything is before I even visited my grandmother. Caring and great community

Provider Response

We were promised sloth but none of it is coming to fruition. Housekeeping is not doing their weekly cleaning and linens are not being cleaned on a weekly basis, every couple of weeks at that. The food is awful and 3 day leftovers are being served. There is basically no activities going on and no one is monitoring COVID as they should. The worse part of it all is the tenant at s are still having to pay FULL RENT. This is absolute robbery. If you cannot keep good employees (which they cannot as they quit ot get fired constantly), and you cannot offer the services in which people are paying good money for, than they should be compensated UNTIL you can give them what was agreed upon. I’m sad to say that I will have to move my loved one out very soon. Not all it’s cracked up to be and again, it’s a shame because it could be an amazing facility if they take care of their employees and get their act together.

Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living was gorgeous. They had wonderful activities. They had a spa night one time, and my girlfriend and I went. They had different stations over the three floors. We did a mini yoga class, and you could get your nails done. The director gave chair massages, and she was good. I've been there several times. They had a Hawaiian lauu, wonderful food, and a hula dancer from Hawaii. Everything was excellent. The people that work there were very nice. The director was very nice.

The place had gone down hill considerably over the last few years. Management keeps changing, food is awful, activities are being cut, no where near what it used to be.

After visiting several facilities and researching others on the internet, this is the place my mother chose to live. Unlike some of the other places, Sterling Heights is bright and airy and does not have the "old" smell that others did. The current staff are all helpful and friendly. The apartments are nice, and each has its own patio or balcony. This facility provides 3 meals per day prepared by a 5 star chef, plus room cleaning and linen service. Sterling Heights also offers more social activities and outings than the others.

Provider Response

Thank you for the lovely review; it is much appreciated. At Sterling Heights we truly love our residents! Our goal is to make our residents feel safer, happier, healthier and more social.

I am/was a resident of this facility

We had a two bedroom apt on second floor, the rooms are large and bright. This is not a place for someone who needs special care. It is run on a tight schedule such as Breakfast at 8am down in the dining room lunch 12 to 1 and dinner 530 . The food was allful, very badly prepared! Our rent was $4500 per month and we were spending money at Wegmans to eat every day . There are no stoves in the apt. We moved out after three months. I do not reco this place unless they improve on the meals. The management changes every so often. They do offer some activities such as bean bag chair games, they have a movie theater.

Staff has resently changed. Current staff is very friendly and helpful; they go out of their way to make you happy. Food is great, my child would eat there everyday if he could. The atmosphere is open and light, not like other adult facilities I've seen. The apartments are what I would expect for typical modern accommodations, with light colors, plush carpet and a balcony or porch off every unit. There are several activities a day to keep you as busy as you want. I would highly recommend Sterling Heights to anyone.

horrible experience- If I could give a 0/5, I would, but unfortunately technological restraints don't allow me to do so. I came for a walk-in tour and waited over 20 minutes without anyone coming to greet me or assist me. truly abhorrent service.

The apartments at Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living were a little bit bigger and had a little bit of an outdoor space, like a little balcony. The common area was very spacious and very nice. When I was there, they were playing chair volleyball. There weren't many people around in other areas, but they had nice facilities. They serve all your meals, clean your apartments, launder the bed linens and the towels, and had a laundromat where you can do your own laundry. They had a bus that they use for outings and to doctors' appointments. The person who gave me the tour was the owner, so they knew everything there was to know about it.

My father-in-law's apartment at Sterling Heights is nice and big. They offer a lot of amenities, three hot meals, maid and laundry service, and transportation. They personally interact with all residents and take the time to know them. My father-in-law doesn't stay in his apartment anymore since he's very busy in this very social environment.

My mother just passed away but was a resident here for 18 months. She was 91. She told me she felt lucky to live in such a nice place. The staff was wonderful, the residents so nice. She was initially active and engaged with all the different activities they offer but as her health deteriorated, less so. This place is great for those who can be independent but is not designed to be effective as you transition to needing more assistance. My mom loved the food, she loved her cozy alcove apartment and she loved the managers. These people are saints. Sterling Heights is a gem.

Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living was one of the more reasonably priced places. They have a management staff there 24/7 while there were no medical people on staff. The rooms were very nice. We were looking at the smallest studio, which can fit a bed, a small couch, a unit for a TV, and a kitchenette with a full refrigerator, so even for a studio, it’s a nice size. The bathrooms were a nice size, too. It had a very nice dining room where they served three meals a day. There seemed to be a lot of activity there. They’re right across the street from a Wegmans and have scheduled transportation, so if you need to go somewhere, they’ll supply the transportation. I met two of the staff who seemed to be very caring and very knowledgeable. They spent a lot of time talking to us and to my dad about why it’s a good idea for a 91-year-old to be in some place else besides by himself. The facility is very modern-looking and clean and looked almost like a luxury hotel.

Sterling Heights Gracious Retirement Living is awesome. My mother has been there since the end of July, and it's fabulous, very economical, and a good value. She gets all her meals, and they do her laundry. It's a really good deal. I'm very disappointed they don't have a Sterling Heights in Virginia, where I live. It's everything she needs. They've got a lot of activities, i.e., movies, games, and field trips. It's everything you could want. We found a great place, and she's extremely happy.

Sterling Heights was independent living, and my father-in-law just wasn't a candidate for that, but it was an absolutely gorgeous facility, and the apartments were very nice. But as nice as it was, it just wouldn't meet his needs; he needs more assistance than what they offered. It just wasn't for us. It is perfect for someone who could be a little more independent. The staff was very nice, we had a nice tour, and they took all the time with us to answer questions and such, but like I said, it just wasn’t for us. Their dining area was very nice. They have a winding staircase that overlooked the dining area, and I think you got to pick your own spot.

One of the things we liked about Sterling Heights is how they didn't smell like a hospital. A lot of these places smell like old people and look like old people homes, but this one didn't. It was very nicely decorated and very clean. Everybody was very friendly. They have a lot of activities that you can participate in. It is not really an assisted living facility, but an independent living facility. You need to be well enough to handle all your own needs. They have people come in too, whether it be a therapist or things like that. They don't give you your medicine. You take care of them yourself, and they don't dispense them to you. It was very nice. They love the food and everything. When you setup the visitation, they want you to come over one of the meal times, so we went over lunch. We got to see how they run lunch. It was very nice, and the food is very good.

Sterling Heights is where my mom is at now. It is a month-to-month. Their apartments are the most beautiful apartments I have ever seen. Sterling Heights is beautiful, but they're new here to us. They're supposed to be OK -- they were promised to be -- but they're just not ready I guess. They run out of food, and their meals, in the beginning when we were first there, had been amazing. They will not supply steaks because they say it is so expensive, so you eat fish or chicken, and most of the time, my mom doesn't even eat there anymore. Her kitchen is not a full kitchen, but you can bring your microwave and stuff. It is a little efficiency apartment, but it is beautiful. My mom goes to exercise class and they put a video on and that's what they do, just that video. It is a beautiful place, but they're going through their problems. It is cheaper than any place we have been to. However, they need to stop making promises they're not going to keep. My mom should go down and have a restaurant-style dinner because that's what they said. She has the right to demand things that they promised her. They need to keep the kitchen staff; I don't know why they couldn't. They had been through seven chefs since my mother moved in since this summer. Also, how they can trust their staff when they haven't been there a long time? They're firing so many or letting them go or not showing up, but the high point is, I don't care if that's happening, my mother shouldn't suffer from it.
