I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I visited my mother-in-law at the Avamere at Newberg's assisted living. It was really good. They did a nice job communicating with me and with her. They communicated well with the family. They assisted her in her daily activities, and they involved her in projects and social activities daily.

Provider Response

Thanks for leaving a review, Angela! We are happy to hear of your positive experience with our senior living community.

My husband hasn’t been in Avamere at Newberg very long, but they seem to be OK, so far. He shares a room with another man. They have activities on Fridays.

Provider Response

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. That is great to hear you had such a wonderful experience.

I visited this facility

I visited Avamere at Newberg. They were very caring, and they tried to have a lot of activities for the residents. They kept it clean. They always had something going on. They took them to shopping, they let people come in and display their stuff so people can shop there, and they had cards, bingo, puzzles, and exercise. At Christmastime, they let people come and sing to the residents, and they had a piano for the residents, which they let them play whenever they want. I have not eaten there, but it always smelled so good. Some of the rooms were spacious. The one-bedroom apartments had a living room and a little kitchenette, which were very livable. However, some of the apartments didn't seem to have enough space. It's how much you pay for what you get. There were times that the residents complain of things missing or stolen and things not getting fixed quickly.

That is so great to hear, thanks for letting us know!

The hospital's social worker referred Avemere for my father. We like it, and we are glad we picked it. It is so good there. Everybody is clean and fresh. They are happy and doing well. It is a nice place. My father is in a large shared room that has a cupboard where he can put personal things, a television, two nightstands, a nice big closet, a twin, and a recliner chair. It also has a kitchenette with a cupboard. My father has been gaining weight since he got there. They give them two choices on each meal, and if he doesn’t like the choices, he can order a hamburger, a steak, or anything that he wants to eat. If they have it, they will fix it. I think the staff can improve on by being more on the same page. They do a really good job, but I notice that some staff don't know how to transfer my dad quite right, while others do. That's a little concerning for me, but when I am there, I let them know how to do it. Then recently a physical therapist comes in, and I tell him how to transfer him. He documents that and shows the staff how to do it, but only the daytime staff is there, the night staff isn't when that happens. Each person who works there does it a little differently, and my dad is very much into repetitive nature. He likes to do things the same way every time. If he doesn't do it the same way, he becomes a little confused and agitated. So, it is important that they do it the same way every time.

Overall the day to day service and staff have been wonderful. We have run into issues though, where essential medication was not reordered before mt grandmother had run out, causing her discomfort and a trip to the hospital. Also, we recently had an incident where she had been sent to the hospital via ambulance with chest pains, and no one on her contact list was notified. No one knew until we received a call that she was back home. If it was not for the past 4 years and her overall happiness at the facility, I would have rated it a one star due to that.

Provider Response

Thank you for your feedback. We would like to follow-up on this issue. You can fill out a brief intake form. Alternately, you can call us directly.

This is an assisted living facility that also has a memory care unit. It's located a little off the beaten path, but just a few minutes from the main highway. Parking can be a challenge, but there is also a small business building nearby that affords space, and some additional parking is also available in the residential neighborhood nearby. About ¾ of the residents are in assisted living"”all with private rooms. There are some one-bedrooms or studio apartments with full bath, small kitchen and bed area. There is ample storage space. All the units are nicely decorated, with a warm feeling"”and residents make an effort to decorate their doors and personalize them. There is a really nice foyer area"”two levels high, with a nice stairway and an elevator for accessibility. There are also cozy sitting areas, which residents seem to use and congregate in regularly. These common areas are also used for activities"”including frequent concerts. Staff at this facility does a good job with finding engaging and interesting live music. Recent acts included a husband and wife singing charming show tunes and a group of seniors who sing mostly country music. These sessions are very well attended. Other activities include arts and crafts and offsite outings such as shopping and casino trips. The dining area is very nice"”with high ceilings and a fireplace and décor that feels like a nice restaurant. The food looks good"”and residents seem to enjoy it. Differing selections are available daily. In the memory care unit, the activity director offers many engaging activities for residents, too. Any residents who are normally introverted are coaxed to participate, and seem to have a good time. There are also many fitting craft activities offered. The memory care also has a locked and secure outdoor garden area that residents can use for walking and gardening and gathering. There are two residents to a room there"”each with a bathroom and closets in a fairly large area, allowing some personal space. The caregiving staff in memory care does a pretty good job; there are not long distances to walk, so the staff doesn't need to travel far to supervise residents. They are also good about following up on suggestions for care. On the assisted living side, there has been a lot of staff turnover, mostly administrative, over the last year and a-half"”and the personnel now there do not seem very personable, experienced or empathetic, nor do they respond quickly to family concerns. There have been incidents with patient falls that were fairly widely publicized, and some staff members were let go in response . Overall, there is a low ratio of caregivers to residents. This facility is fine for those who need a lower level of care, such as only help with meals or medication management, but may not be a good fit for those who need more. The cost is in the mid to upper-level for the area.

I visited this facility

My grandmother lived at Avamere in Newberg, Oregon. From what I experienced, saw, heard from my grandmother, it was a nice facility. They had very kind staff from what I saw. I had some problems with the med aide and keeping my grandmothers meds up to date and filled. This could cause very bad problems for some if they do not have friends or family there to check up on. They had a great cleaning crew. The lady who would come clean her apartment was so friendly and took her time to listen to talk to my grandmother. They also had a young and vibrant kitchen crew. Most of them were young (high school age) which I think is wonderful because they keep things exciting around there. Plus they were all attentive and caring towards residents special needs. The whole building was kept very clean. All in all, I think this facility was pretty good but could just use more staff in the meds.

Provider Response

It's wonderful to hear about our friendly staff here at Avamere at Newberg. We are happy to hear your grandmother was well taken care of.
