I toured Emerald Square Senior Living. They have assisted living and independent living, too. They have cottages out in the back. I didn't try the food there, but they had the menu out. They even had a schedule of detailed events and activities that they were having going on a day. They had someone coming in to play music, and yesterday, they played bingo. Their events coordinator, her name is Katie, and she was a really sweet deal. That was good, too. They had a courtyard, which was kind of like right in the middle of it, so no one would get lost or run away. That courtyard was nice, and they have free access to it.
The floor plan layout was much more conducive to my dad's ability to access the bathroom. The basic studio wasn't a good fit for my dad specifically just because the bathroom was small. You couldn't exactly put a wheelchair in there or the scooter that he has. The studio deluxe was much larger and it had a walk-in shower so he could get a chair in there. The access to it is great because it's a straight shot, and you don't have to bend around a corner. Then the one-bedroom apartment that they showed us was quite a large floor plan. I thought it was too much for my dad, and it was more than what was required of him. We were also trying to keep the costs down, so we were planning on going to the studio deluxe depending on if they take him or not. They said they're going to call us back tonight pending the evaluation of his abilities and everything.
They had a salon, and they had a library. They said they switched the books in and out, they have someone come in there, and the residents can check them out. They have two courtyards. One courtyard was for smoking and the other one was non-smoking, so that was nice because my dad likes to go outside. They also have a fitness center. They don't have a whole lot of equipment, but it's enough for him because he likes dumbbells, and they have about 20 dumbbells up to 20 pounds. He can't move his legs, but he can move his arms, so he likes to do that. When you walk in there, they have this schedule of what's going on the day, the events that they've coordinated, and they even have a joke of the day on the paper, which is kind of cool. I know my dad when he reads that, he's going to have something to tell somebody else or to talk about outside the community, like when he calls me, so that's cool. The staff is great; the residents seem happy. I prefer this place because it is a better fit for my dad. What compelled my decision to go there was the floorplan layout for the bathroom.
