The Gardens of Westlake was the second facility my father was actually in, and we looked at many others to compare. The Gardens was far and away superior to any other place we found. The first thing you'll notice is that each resident has their own full apartment, not just a room. They have a living room, full kitchen, bathroom and a choice of one or two bedrooms. All apartments have either a patio or a balcony, so there is lots of light and things to look at. And unlike other facilities that generally have an emergency pull cord on the wall (which can be hard to reach if you fall, or are sick), the Gardens gives each resident an emergency button to wear around their neck. It never took more than about 2 minutes for an aide to respond after the button was pushed.
The second thing you'll notice is that the food is wonderful, and it's served restaurant style. When you come down, your waitress will present three choices of entree, several choices of sides, and soup, and there is a dessert tray with many options presented after every meal. If you don't like the three choices, there is always an alternative menu with "available anytime" dishes. The quality is really good, and the wait staff is very attentive. There are also many options of entertainments, including two days a week that the bus takes residents to local stores, two days it takes them to doctor appointments, and a day every week when there is an off-site activity. Every Friday is Happy Hour with free wine and beer, and appetizers.
But the staff is what makes the Gardens stand out. They have a large staff (we never felt rushed or ignored, which can happen in a facility that is short-staffed), and every single person we interacted with was courteous, friendly and caring. I was extremely impressed with the quality of the staff. The nursing staff is really amazing - they are on top of your loved one's condition; they not only notice when there is a change, but they respond to that change and provide whatever is needed before you need to ask. They also will contact you whenever there is a change. The rooms are kept very clean, and my dad's laundry was done weekly and put away where it belonged. The staff took care of helping him shower, they shaved him daily, made sure his clothes were changed and clean, and were so sweet and attentive and caring whenever they interacted with him.
There really aren't enough good things to say about The Gardens of Westlake. It's a wonderful place for seniors to live, whether they are still in good condition, or whether they are in failing health. I would give it the highest recommendation, if you are looking for a place for yourself or a family member.
