I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom is in Brookwood Retirement Community. She fell and broke her wrists and her clavicle, and she was in rehab for 21 days. Now she's in long-term care. They don't have a memory care unit, but all the patients on this floor do have memory issues. She doesn't know where she is, but I'd say it's pretty good. She has to be fed because her right wrist is broken and she's right-handed. But she seems happy. I think they're pretty good. They answer my questions. My mom is in bed all the time, but she does get kind of rambunctious. I told the one nurse yesterday that my mom is pretty spry to be 94 years old. She will get in the wheelchair and shuffle all over the place. She will get up and try to walk into other people's rooms. She has a roommate, and she went and got in her bed because she did not want to get up. There are two in the room. I didn't want her in a private room because it costs more. It's very plain. They have beds, TVs, and then nothing on the walls. They have a curtain, too. She's by a window, but all she sees is part of the building. If she sits up, then she can see out the window. When they moved her from rehab to long-term, I walked in after they had moved her upstairs and her breakfast is sitting there and it was cold. I talked to the nurse and the nurse did not know that she needed to be fed. So, I fed her what she would eat. And after that, they started feeding her. They will take them down to the common room for bingo. But she doesn't know what was going on. So, she'd picked up the card and she'll be like, "I guess I better put this back in." She doesn't know how to do anything anymore. They do get them out of the room and try to do stuff with them, whether they do it or not. I don't see the staff that often, and I have to hunt them down when I want to ask them a question. But there's more than one patient, so I understand that they're busy. I haven't smelled any funky smells or anything.

Limited Staffing. Nurses are on their cell phones in the hallway. Limited interaction with the patients. Rooms are not clean. Patients are often left alone.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

my friend has little family so as his lifelong friend I selected Brookwood for him based upon several things. It is a clean facility. There has been a great deal of staff turnover in the dining related area and my friend complains frequently(some is his pickiness)about the food. They are getting ready to install the 4th administrator in the 16 months he has been there. The STNA aide is wonderful and exceedingly helpful on the days she is there. Sadly, patient is not a self starter and no one prods him to attempt walker use rather than sitting in his wheelchair.

We chose Brookwood Retirement Community because dad had therapy there before and so he feels comfortable there. They're very responsive to his needs and when I have questions. They are very understanding of our situation. So, it's been really good. My dad enjoys the food. He cleans his plate all the time. They have a courtyard, a salon, a nice lower level, and little areas on each floor where you can do family things. It's a nice place.

I would say the house keeping is extremely poor but they do not clean at all. A patient there hasn't had any housekeeping. They empty the trash can and do not put fresh trash bags back in the can. The floor has not been mopped and the patient cleans his own bathroom. A gaping hole in the ceiling was left for quite some time. I saw and took photos of medication laying in the floor in the hallway. My return visit 2 days later said medication was still in the hallway floor. One of the nurses does not properly administer Insulin and it dripped down the patients arm not in his blood stream. The state needs to go in and investigate. Said patient was horribly neglected and now has a great possibility of losing his foot due to neglect he received there. I am totally disgusted by the level of care in this facility. I wouldn't suggest taking loved ones to this facility. There are recordings of incidents that have taken place in this particular facility that raises serious concern.

My friend spent about a week at Brookwood Retirement Community. It's very nice. The only thing that was not nice is when you walk in there are so many people in wheelchairs sitting right by the front door. When you're coming in and you're ambulatory, that's not always a nice sight to see. The food seemed to be quite good for him and he experienced some activities there.

Brookwood Retirement Community was still renovating their dining facility. It did have all the care services. They seemed to have daily activities within the community itself. The community was OK. The building was a little bit dated. The apartment rooms were nice.

I visited this facility

Brookwood seemed like it needed to be fixed up a little bit. It needed a little work. There was a chapel that was closed off, and they had a community room that wasn't open anymore. It looked beaten up. I guess their plan was to renovate it, so they had it blocked off like you couldn't go in there, so we were freaked out by that. There was a nice outdoor pool, which is good if you're able to get into water. They had a swim class for residents.

I just like them with everything at Brookwood Retirement Community. I like their one bedroom apartment. It was a decent size room. You could put your stuff in. He likes music, so he has a stereo, and he has his own computer. The staff was wonderful, and I would recommend this place.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I am in Brookwood Retirement. It is very nice. We have activities here. I play bridge on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In fact, I am missing a bunco game, which is starting right now. The food is pretty good. The nurses are nice. I don't really care about some of the aides. Though some of them are nice, I thought some of them need to have a better attitude. However, I don't really don't need any help so I don't have to call on them.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I am actually a relative of a past resident of this facility. My mom was there for 4 yrs., having entered as an independent resident and about 6 mos. later became an assisted living resident. During her stay there in both of these capacities, she felt very comfortable there and her care was very good. She was also able to stay in her very nice 1-BR apt. there. However, after 2 yrs., she required the next higher level of care and had to be moved to a different floor, and her care there diminished noticeably, complete with several falls, one from her bed when she was unable to move on her own and they said she did and blamed it on her air bed, although her roommate and her roommate's mom both said my mom never moved when she was in bed. The hospital where she'd been taken said it looked like she had fallen from the top of a bunk bed. She had just begun receiving Hospice support there and they were appalled at the bruising and a complaint was filed with the state but nothing was found to be out of order when they arrived there. I was paying her bill sout of her money and was often billed incorrectly and had to carefully check each one and they finally reimbursed/credited me for things she shouldn't have to pay for. Hospice told me that I shouldn't have to be paying for her depends and a list of other things that I was still being billed for and asked me to submit my bills to them so they could reimburse me for that. I do believe that since that time their billing system improved, but I was very disappointed in her care at the end as I could see they didn't take care of her as they should have - granted they are always shorthanded but improper positioning in a chair, a dirty face, etc., is unacceptable, plus they knew when Hospice would be there each week and slacked off on doing things they expected Hospice to do such as bathing, grooming, etc. Unfortunately, I saw the same things go on in a different more upscale nursing home when visiiting a friend of mine several times following several strokes.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My sister is at Brookwood Retirement Community. It's a wonderful facility and everything is going very well. It is close to our place and it offers some flexibility that other facilities do not have. The staff is very kind, caring, and very nurturing. She has a studio apartment, and the food is very good. They are very accommodating to her dietary needs. What I liked best about the place is its cleanliness.

My experience at this facility has been very good. I visit there about 2-3 times a month. The culture in the facility is very friendly and I just have to say they have shown a very caring attitude on my numerous visits. They have a refrigerator, floors are carpeted, closet space is not half bad either, just complaints about not being enough shelves in the studio. Apart from accommodation itself they really try to keep them engaged. It is very satisfying to see my grandma here

Facility is not good for someone who has medical needs like my mother who had Alzheimers disease. They do not have enough help on the third floor where the Alzheimers patients are. If my sister and I did not visit she would not have been taken care of properly. Facility is only good for retirement only or rehabilitation.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My aunt was having trouble getting by on her own. Taking care of her place and being able to do the necessary things she needed to do to have a good life on her own. We visited this facility and found that it really has everything you would want in assisted living. The people living there are well cared for and there are a lot of incentives to keep people there active, healthy, and happy, which are very important to both her and us. Some of the things that people can do there are tennis lessons, indoor swimming, and lots of social events. The staff is very friendly and doctors are on site in case of any emergency. It's kind of a bit far from the nearest hospital, but there are urgent care facilities that are very close. If the hospital distance isn't an issue I can't recommend this place enough. She has been very happy and her happiness is what is really important to us.

I am a friend or relative of resident

I have visited Brookwood many times with my grandmother to go see her friends. Brookwood is a okay place but not great. They provide activities including WII bowling night, bingo, water aerobics, crafts, movie night and many more. The downside to Brookwood is it needs a update, the halls and lobby's seem like a hospital and they are somewhat depressing. Maybe if they gave the place a makeover it would bring some life back into it. All in all it is a good place to live if you don't mind how they decorate halls and lobbys.
