I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

One thing I would like to express is that I am grateful for their assistance for keeping my mom safe. However, just a few suggestions to help. 1st one, which is really a question. Why do you tape off the dining room? Why can’t residents sit at the tables? They are not children and need treated with respect. You do have water in that area, so why no access? Second concern: why are the cabinets up so high that residents can’t reach them without standing on a step stool, which is a BIG SAFETY ISSUE?

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad stayed at Brookdale Barberton, but we had to take him out of there because they were terrible. They knew they couldn't take him because he has special needs, and we told them all of his needs, but they still took him anyway and charged us for those. They were unable to provide those services that they charged extra for. My sister argued with them and she did get back the extra money we paid for the special care. I didn't see any problem with the facility. It was decent and clean. It's just that they didn't have the staffing ability to be able to do what they told us they could do. They should have never accepted my dad because they knew what his needs were and they knew that they couldn't provide them.

I visited this facility

The staff at Brookdale Barberton was very professional, and it was a very nice facility. The dining area was very clean. They had a beauty salon and they also had excursions for the people to go on field trips, which were very nice. Everybody I spoke to was very friendly and very helpful.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father has moved into Brookdale Barberton. It's a very warm community. There are about 28 residents that live there, and every one of the residents that I've met had been very nice. So far, I can't say enough about the staff. They've all been just extremely nice and very helpful with my father. I'm very pleased and very happy with moving him there. He seems to be very happy. My father's apartment got a front area that we use as a seating room, and then it's got an open back room that's a good size with a walk-in closet and a very good-sized bathroom with a large shower. He's got a good-sized room. We have a couch in there with a couple of chairs in the front seating area and some tables with lamps. He sleeps in a reclining chair, but we've got his chair in there with another couple of lamps, a dresser, and his television. He's got more than enough room. I've been very pleased with everything that's been going on so far. I'm very pleased with the value for money. We saw other locations and saw what their rates were. This rate is on the lower schedule as far as rates are concerned with other locations. It's not as fancy, but that's exactly what I wanted. Dad is a very simple person, and I knew he wouldn't go for a more opulent place. This is just very homey, very simple, and very clean. It's everything that he needs, so we're happy. They have a spa that he hasn't used yet, but I'm going to encourage him to use it. They also do some physical therapy. We have a mutual friend that has been there a couple of months and he is doing some physical therapy, and I think he's been really happy with it as well. Everyone has been very nice and very helpful. The facility is very well kept and clean. I was there this morning and he looked at me and said (and kind of surprised), 'There's a guy that comes by every morning and gets my trash.' He just thought that was the neatest thing.

I visited this facility

We visited Brookdale Barberton for my mother. The facility has a good family atmosphere, but it seems to be on the small side. The living space spaces are small, and the facility seems a little rundown. They have exercise times. They talked about bingo, and they have movies.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother has been a resident for two months. I have been very impressed with the kindness and patience of all staff members. I am also very aware of how hard they work. My mother has at times not felt like eating in the dining room so lunch is brought to her in her mini apartment. The suites are very nice. My mother has a one bedroom suite with a walk in closet, roomy bathroom, roomy bedroom and cozy living room with a kitchenette. The entire facility is cozy. Its not fancy, which I think makes it feel more like a real home. A real bonus is that people can bring their pets with them. My mother has an 18 year old cat who lives with her. I don't know what we would have done if she could not have her cat with her. She has his constant companionship. Another resident had a small dog there until he moved to a VA facility. The building is built around an interior courtyard which is very nice. Residents can go outside in the courtyard without wandering. Its like a mini park. The front porch has very comfortable chairs. I spend a lot of time with my mother on the front porch. We have been very happy so far with Brookdale Barberton.

I visited this facility

A bit about my personal experiences. At one point, did not keep track of my relative and left them outside for multiple hours, in the beginning of July, while they were wearing long sleeve clothing. That relative became lethargic and had to go to the hospital. My family and I would visit frequently. On several occasions we discovered our relative wearing the same clothes multiple days in a row. For instance, we'd come on Sunday, and then when we came again on Wednesday, the relative was wearing the same exact thing.

I visited this facility

We toured Brookdale Barberton, and it was a good experience. The people were very nice. They answered our questions. The rooms and apartments were fine. They had all kinds of activities for people like bingo, but my mom would not want to do any of those. What I liked the most about it was probably the homey atmosphere. It was a smaller facility.

Sterling House of Barberton was very nice. They gave me a tour and showed me a couple of the units. My dad is a veteran, and they gave me some information on how to apply for additional benefits. Everybody seemed real friendly and helpful. The rooms were a little small, which would be good for a single type person. They were one-bedroom units with a small living room, a small bedroom, and a good sized bathroom easily accessible for handicap, like a walk-in type shower. The dining room was a big open area. They had shopping trips. With security, you had to be let in.

I visited this facility

I did not care for Sterling House of Baberton because nothing seemed to be updated, but the staff seemed very well. It seemed like a homey place, but since my mom is a deaf and mute, I don’t know if she would do well in the facility. They do have activities going on, although I didn’t see any when I had my visit. This is solely private pay and does not accept Medicaid.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Sterling House is very nice. It has everything that my mom needs, and it's very close, so I can be there whenever I want to visit. They play bingo. They have care players who come in. They have local church groups that comes in and sings. They have special things around holidays that they invite the family members to come for. She takes part in many of those activities. Sometimes they go out in a van. They take them down to the local Target store and let them do some shopping. Tonight is ice cream night. Every day of the month, they have a calendar of activities that varies from month to month, and a resident could stay to visit here most of the day. The staff is very friendly, and they relate well to the residents there. They seem to be very caring, very understanding, and very patient which is hard sometimes with older people. She likes the food there. They're required to eat as a group in the dining room, and she has a table where she sits out with three other people, and there are different levels of care there. Some people have to be fed, and they have an aide to do that. They eat three meals a day there, and they last about an hour at a time.

We looked at Sterling House and we liked it very, very well. We thought it was a great facility, but it was just expensive. It was a beautiful and a well cared facility and we thought it would be great for her, but she just refused the amount of money that she is going to spend there. She said it was just too much. If we had our choice, this is where we wanted her to be.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

The Sterling Houses of Ohio are certainly one of the higher end facilities in Ohio. Especially the Sterling House of Barberton. The services they offer here are top notch, as well as the amenities. They have their own beauty parlor, whirlpool, dining area and a private visitation room. The staff is wonderful and overall it is a very clean and friendly atmosphere. I felt very welcomed as I entered the building, and have absolutely no complaints. I have recommended the Sterling House of Barberton to many of my clients (I own a home health aide company), and have not one has had any negative feedback. It is affordable, clean, and they treat your loved ones how you would want to be treated.
