Continuing Care Retirement Community Reviews for Menorah Park

I am/was a resident of this facility

We chose The Oaks at Menorah Park because it is a small community. It has only 56 apartments and the management is very accommodating; the dining room is accommodating; everything is wonderful, really. The service workers are very attentive to the needs of the people who live here. The environment is lovely. Its huge atrium is very spacious and is kept very clean. There is always somebody at the desk 24 hours a day. It is like living in a fine hotel. We have a two-bedroom apartment, which is small. There are a lot of windows in the living room and you can have whatever you want; if you want carpeting you get carpeting, if you want wood floors you get wood floors, and they paint it with your colors. You do pay for those things and I think the charge is $25/hour for labor and the laborers are people who do all the work in the facility. The staff seemed very, very happy. They are very friendly and very ready to do what you need. They have a walking club and a discussion club. They also have chair yoga, and they take people to lunch or dinner and to their doctors. Round trip is only $5. They have movies in the evening and they bring in concerts once a month, but I am fairly new, so those are only some of the things that I am aware of right now. The food is okay; sometimes it is wonderful and sometimes so-so. They try very hard not to be institutional and it is very, very acceptable.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My brother is all set in Menorah Park. This facility fulfills all the needs that he has. They pretty much provide the usual amenities of any retirement communities like two or three meals a day, clean the place on Fridays, and give medicine in the morning and night. However, Menorah Park has a little bit more than the basics.

I visited this facility

Menorah Park has a very quiet entrance and is set back from the road a bit with a long winding driveway. The grounds are very pretty and the building looks a very well constructed from the outside. Inside it was very nicely decorated with plants, tables and benches to rest on. There is this really big open space for a community area with lots of tables and games stacked neatly for the residents to enjoy. The apartment that Lucielle's friends were living in are bigger than my own 1 bedroom apartment in Albany! There were handrails everywhere which really gave me peace of mind because Lucielle doesn't have the best balance since her stroke. She could walk with her cane on one side and hold onto the railing with the other. The staff was pleasant and stayed out of the way when Lucielle was visiting, except to interrupt once (while we were there) to make sure that mediciene was taken. One attendant's perfume was a little strong but it didn't seem to bother anyone else. The nurses and aides seemed respectful of the residents who lived there and didn't have the barely hidden contempt that I have seen in hospitals. Stephen and I left Lucielle and her friends at the community room as they were all going to play Mahjong and cards while they visited. Stephen and I found a nice resturant locally to have some lunch. We also did some shopping and caught a movie, I forget what movie it was but it worked out perfectly as we were able to pick up Lucielle just before dinner time and head home. Stephen has taken her back to see her friends a couple of times since then but I was not able to go with him.

I visited this facility

The atmosphere of Menorah Park was very nice. The staff was very friendly and helpful, very attentive to the need of the elderly. Every once in a while, the residents were visited by school children in the area from the local high schools and churches. The residents' faces would light up whenever visitors arrived. Food was given at a set time three times per day but residents were not required to eat together or at that time if they did not wish to; however, the option was available and many chose to dine together. The food is all made at the facility and tastes good. Games are provided for entertainment as is electronics and all things are available to all residents equally. Although the air is laced with sadness, the staff does their best to lift the spirits of their residents and talk to them as old friends, not as little children or wards to take care of. Special needs are paid attention to and the staff makes sure that each resident is getting enough food, activity, and social interaction to make their stay comfortable and enjoyable. Residents are never forced to do things they do not want to do. All in all, it is a lovely facility.
