I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father moved into the Terrace at Beverwyck over the weekend. We chose it for its features, its amenities, and its value. Also, it's a non-profit community. It's lovely; it's like a 5-star hotel. It's beautiful, clean, bright and tastefully decorated. It's the right kind of environment for elderly people who can't or don't want to live alone anymore. Everybody that lives there look happy and healthy.

I visited this facility

I have made a deposit to get on the waiting list for Beverwyck. First of all, it is not going to be expensive, but there are a number of people I know who are there already, and they have gone through the process of waiting. So in terms of compatibility, I am content. I have to get more information about the particular programs they offer, but knowing the people that I know there, they would not be there if they were not getting what they wanted. They will transport you to shopping and doctors' appointments, and they have a pool and an exercise area. That is my understanding; that's a limited knowledge of what they do, but that is what I know. I went to a place in Kentucky when I first went down there and what I most observed was a new couple to the place sitting in the lobby, looking absolutely lost. I understand what happens and, in this case, if I go in to Beverwyck -- and I expect that I will -- I would know easily ten couples. My impression is that it is physically attractive, that it is expanding quickly, and even while expanding the waiting list is still difficult. I would say it is a 5; I trust it is. Because I am not there, I am judging it from the outside.

I visited this facility

The rooms at Beverywyck were lovely. They were of good size. My parents ate there, and they said the food was good. They were happy with the meal. My husband and I had a chance to look at the menus, and they looked very good. In the dining facility, the spacing between the tables was a little tighter, but they could still get people with wheelchairs and walkers in. The only thing I could think of to improve would be to have full generator coverage.

I am a friend or relative of resident

First, the Terrace is NOT an Assisted Living facility. It is an "Enriched Housing" facility. You will be paying Assisted Living prices and getting services far below those offered at a legitimate Assisted Living facility. These are NY state licensing categories. Look them up. The place was lovely when we first moved my parents in. Then the administrator changed and a guy named Brian was put in charge. The place has gone downhill since then. Staff positions go unfilled for months. My father went unshaved for weeks because his direct care aide was on medical leave and not replaced. Staff morale is terrible. Staff will sometimes take out their frustration on families and residents. I will acknowledge that the food service is very good. I just wish that was enough. The worst thing is the obvious conflict of interest that exits because Brian is the administrator of both the Terrace "enhanced living' facility AND the adjacent Nursing home. The conflict comes in when Brian has empty (and expensive) beds in the skilled nursing facility and apparently tries to fill them by involuntarily discharging people from the Enriched housing to encourage them to go into the nursing home. As Brian has been quoted as saying "this is a business". If you want your family member to be treated like a person, not a profit center, go elsewhere. • • •

I am a friend or relative of a resident

We used Beverwyck for a total of 3 years. My father was a resident there. It was a very warm, welcoming place. It was also very clean and very comfortable. It had all levels of care. The staff's work ethics had a very high standard, they're always available, they were unusually attentive and they answered questions. They did everything to help accommodate my father when he moved there. They introduced him to people and went out of their way to make sure he was included in activities. My dad had a private room. The room had an adequate and plenty of gathering space when family came to visit. It had also a nice outside space. The dining room was very accessible and lovely. You sit in the table with the same companion during meals. They formed friendships. Food was wonderful. My father had to go on a diet, they were very kind and accommodating in working his dietary arrangements. For activities they had yoga, physical exercise, movies, sing-a-longs, music groups from the outside and they take group to the Palisades Theater and entertainment in the city. It was a nice place to be.

I visited this facility

Beverwyck's assisted living community is beautiful. I went in the main entrance and the receptionist was a senior citizen. She was friendly and I filled out an employment application. While I was there, some residents and visitors were talking in the spacious waiting area. Some residents were ambulating with walkers and an employee was going around watering plants. They have a gift shop off the waiting room. The decor is traditional and the rooms are immaculate. It's summer, so I could walk around outside. Many residents were walking for exercise along the meandering roads outside. The many residential buildings have parking lots and easy access. The facility was built recently and has the advantages of modern construction. Anyone would love living there or staying for awhile.
