I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The social workers are kind and follow up very well, keeping close communication via telephone calls. However, the nursing staff on the floors seem to be unable to handle the number of residents they have. They are kind, but simply understaffed. My grandfather has since passed, but I often think of the incident where he did not receive his ointment for his bedsore. He was bedridden for a few months and eventually developed bedsores when he was at UPCC. This may or may not be at the fault of UPCC. He was unable to move or speak on his own. It was medical staff responsibility to help reposition him to avoid bedsores, especially because family was restricted access due to COVID. Due to his condition, he was nonverbal and when he received his biweekly shower, medical staff did not reapply his bedsore ointment. It was only when I noticed him grimace in pain when I realized. This neglect may seem like a small issue, but being that he was on hospice, this should not have occurred as comfort care was our primary priority. The nurse did not want to admit to this error and also stated he was not in pain. Pain is subjective. Nobody can decide for someone else if they are in pain or not. This upsetting experience has stayed with me since. I noticed many residents sitting his their wheelchairs in the shared lounge space. They seemed to be comfortable, but I believe the entire space needs renovation. The wallpaper in my grandfather's room was peeling. It did not create a comforting experience for him. It was a cold environment. I wish I were able to take a tour of the facility before admitting my grandfather. Unfortunately, we were pressed on time due to his rapidly declining condition and due to COVID, many facilities were not taking new patients. I trusted reviews online in making my decision. A big problem I experienced was with the language barrier. Prior to admission, I had asked if there were Cantonese speaking employees to which I was answered yes. I quickly realized there was only 1 employee who was often not caring for my grandfather. A nurse who spoke Mandarin often came in contact with him, but became aggressive and raised her voice when he did not reciprocate. This was despite me telling her he was not hard of hearing. Cantonese and Mandarin are two different dialects. He simply could not understand her, but the way she responded was highly concerning. Professionalism was out the door with her. However, all other staff are friendly - just overworked. I am sharing this review in hopes that you read this before you admit a family member to this facility. No facility is perfect, but your family deserves better than mediocre. You shouldn't have to worry, calling day and night to get in touch with staff to ensure your family member is okay. You should be able to trust the facility you choose. I have rated food a 3 because it was not outstanding, but I appreciated the Nutritionist on duty calling me to discuss my grandfather's diet. My entire review has explained my 2 star rating for the staff and facilities. As for value and activities, my grandfather's insurance had paid in full and no activities were appropriate as he was bedridden.

Overall, Union Plaza is managed well. When you enter the facility there is security and you must log in and log out. The lobby is well lit, clean and decorated accordingly to the holiday. There are 2 patients to a room. The room is clean, but the furniture needs some replacing. The food is very good. It is nutritious and tasty. It varies from Asian food to American food. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable. If you have any issues, problems or questions, bring it to their attention and they will do their best to take care of it/resolve it. The activities director puts forth great effort to keep the patients entertained/engaged. During COVID, the staff gives current updates regarding patient visits and establishes strict guidelines to visitation -as it should be to ensure safety for all. During the weekday it is a full staff, the weekend is a skeleton crew.

It is with great pleasure to write about this great nursing home. A dear friend lived at this place for a good 2 year period and all I have to say is positive comments about it. She was always happy because staff was always helping not only her but others. The staff is excellent and speaks deferent language witch is very helpful for the diverse community in Queens. I recalled a lady by the name of Natalia, she helped my friend translating constantly. Thanks for your dedication and may God Bless all of you!!!

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Mother has been to Union Plaza Care Center. She didn't have a very good experience. The environment wasn't that pleasant. The room is OK. The staff was OK. The food was OK, too. One bed was facing the door and the other bed was facing the window. The room was not that bright.

Other

Environment: The first thing you notice when entering Union Plaza, is the lack of that strange smell that are present in many nursing homes. There are 7 units where residents reside, each with a RN nurse supervisor. Each unit has a bright dining room with a TV, a TV lounge and an area for sitting. There is a recreation room in the lobby and a 9th floor recreation room and lounge. Although the wallpapers are a bit faded, it is mainly clean and neat. During the summer time, it can get a bit stuffy. The nurses may turn on the air conditioning, and the light in the dining room may be turned off in order to keep the room cooler and more comfortable for the residents. Staff: This facility has a large Asian population, and this type of diversity is also reflected in the staff, which includes Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, Russian and Hispanic nationalities. The administrators, RN nurses, LPNs, CNAs, dietitians, therapists, housekeeping staff, recreation staff and dietary aides are all friendly and caring towards the residents. Some dietitians even help feed the residents. Food: The kitchen staff includes a Korean chef, so there are often Korean dishes made to appeal to the Asian residents. However, the American residents are never forgotten! While the Asian residents receive Korean food such as Chop Chae, Bulgogi and Beef Rib Soup, the non-Asian residents are given items such as Spaghetti and Meatballs, Meatloaf or Baked Ziti. The staff eats the same meal as the residents, which was so good I ate it for the entire duration of my 15-week internship at this facility. During the summer months, there is also a barbeque every two weeks! The menu runs on a 3-week cycle, so for long-term residents it can become boring after some time. However, the kitchen staff tries to accommodate any meal requests the residents have. Activities: The recreation staff provides a variety of in-facility activities and plan outings to casinos. In-facility activities include ice cream socials, coffee clutches, resident council meetings, pizza making parties, etc. The recreation staff also decorates each unit according to the time of the year and facilitate activities within each unit.
