rehab gone bad

1

August 26, 2020

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My Mom was sent to Elizabeth Church Manor for a 5 week rehab visit. She was there for the initial 2 weeks with some rehab services, some help with personal care, including a "wash cloth" hair wash. She finally after 2 weeks had help with a shower. Then she was transferred to the nursing home section for the rest of her "rehab" stay. She was able to "pass" her rehab test so she no longer qualified for daily rehab services. She sat in her room without a phone, no visitors of course due to covid, and no shower or help with daily personal care. The food was, according to her, "hardly edible". It was always cold! When I asked the social worker (who was the only person I could talk to about problems because she cared) about the "no phone available" issue and the "no shower", she was finally able to get Mom one more shower--it had been 4 weeks at that point since she had arrived there! The staff was, I think, overwhelmed with the covid thing but that does not excuse my Mom's basic needs not being met! Don't send someone you love to this facility, that's all I can say!

I visited this facility

I visited Elizabeth Church Manor with my son and daughter-in-law and loved it. Both of the buildings were so clean, so neat, and so welcoming. I wish I could move in there tomorrow. There were several shared rooms, but at 82, I don’t want to share a room with anyone. They were all clean, spacious, and neat. I kept asking my son, “Have you filled the application yet? Have you heard anything?” because if I had my way, I’d be there this minute. The staff was very nice, but I didn’t have that much contact because we went there and took a tour on a Sunday. The people I saw were very nice. There was a chapel, which impressed me, and, as far as I know, it was available for people to go in anytime of the day. I do a lot of needlework and there was a whole room set up with large tables not too far from the room that I hope I will be getting. I was very impressed.

I visited this facility

My visit involved volunteering to host a bingo game for the residents of Elizabeth Church Manor. The facility seemed clean, and the staff was generally friendly and attentive. However, the attitude of many of the guests was a bit alarming. Some seemed depressed, and others continually had negative comments. Many of these were not specific in nature, but they conveyed an atmosphere that was not positive. Of course, these residents have reason to be down, but their attitudes seemed even more extreme for the circumstances. Still, I could not pin point a specific reason for this atmosphere: it simply was. The staff laid out many bingo prizes which the residents eagerly competed for. They seemed to enjoy the game, and stated that they looked forward to it. The facility itself was dimly lit and grey, which contributed to the down and drab atmosphere. It needed color and pizazz, in its present state it seemed to contribute to the sense of negativity that was evident in the residents' attitudes.
