Provision Living at West County trains every staff member to be prepared to work with residents who have a dementia diagnosis. Beginning with orientation, our team is provided training on effective approaches, understanding behaviors, and how to communicate with dementia residents. Our state guidelines require that we provide an ongoing program of dementia care skills training for all staff, both in our Memory Care and in our Assisted Living. Our ongoing continuing education program includes extensive training for providing the best services for our Memory Care residents. We utilize resources and training techniques that are recognized by the Alzheimer’s Association and other organizations dedicated to providing care and services for those with dementia diagnoses.

Provision Living at West County has a diverse and dynamic resident population. Residents come from all walks of life. Their diverse backgrounds give our community a rich and robust group of people who quickly become friends and find common ground. Residents range in age from 70 to 97 with an average resident age of 84. Favorite activities include shopping, outings to restaurants, movies and other local attractions. Our residents enjoy gathering for music with Ryan and from guests who frequently come in to play. Happy Hours, bingo, cards, art club, and woodworking are also popular pastimes.

Our Executive Chef is a graduate of L’Ecole Culinaire and draws upon his years of food and culinary expertise in fine dining and restaurants. He brings creativity and flavor to our menus and adds special touches and dishes that may be new to our resident’s palates. Our restaurant style meal service is delivered in our beautiful intimate dining room. We offer a featured meal each day for the noon and evening meals, as well as an extensive ala carte menu. Ala carte selections are prepared to order at each meal. Breakfast is always cooked to order and is available upon request at all three meals!

We are the only community in St. Louis to offer Foresite Eldercare – a technology that provides continuous fall risk assessments, detection and health analysis for early illness detection. Our community is also designed to offer the latest in fire safety standards and life safety codes with a fully integrated alarm system that includes smoke detectors in all resident apartments and throughout the community with a remote connection to a central dispatching system. We are fully-sprinklered ensuring even greater safety for residents. Residents are provided with an emergency call system that is monitored in a central location and alerts staff when a resident needs assistance. All entry and exit doors are alarmed and provide a greater measure of security. Our front entrance is locked after 7 p.m. nightly and requires a code and staff assistance to enter after hours. Our community is also monitored 24/7 via security cameras to ensure the safest possible setting for each of our residents.

Provision Living at West County begins building great communication and information exchange with residents and their families through our pre-admission process. Our team spends time learning about each resident’s individual needs and preferences to ensure a person-centered, individualized plan using resident and family input. This plan is reviewed on a regular basis and as resident’s needs or preferences change. We encourage our families to ask questions, visit with our leadership team and staff whenever possible to ensure we are sharing information effectively. Family members are invited to our Family Council meeting where they can communicate with the community leaders and share their experiences with other family members. Our full-time activities director shares photos with families of our residents engaged in our social and recreational activities programs. Families can also keep up with our residents through our social media outlets such as Life Loop and our Facebook page!

Provision Living at West County ensures that our caregiver-to-resident ratio meets or exceeds required State of Missouri requirements. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that each resident receives the care and supportive services they need to maximize their independence while living in our community.
If Provision Living at West County accepts dogs or cats, what indoor/outdoor areas can they enjoy?
We are a pet-friendly community and we understand that our residents’ pets are family. Dogs and cats are welcome; however, must remain inside the resident’s personal apartment. Unfortunately, not everyone enjoys having pets in their lives and we must respect their rights as well as those of our pet owners. All pets must be leashed when outside the resident’s apartment, in common area. Pets are not allowed in the dining rooms at any time.
What ongoing senior care training does the staff receive?
Provision Living at West County is committed to ensuring that our caregivers are provided with ongoing education and training. Upon becoming a member of our team, each staff member is provided with an extensive orientation process that includes both State required training and additional training required by our community. Both new hire training and our ongoing continuing education programs include topics related to Dementia, Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Resident Safety, Confidentiality and Safeguarding of resident information, Safe Medication Administration Techniques, and Customer Service. Training is provided for staff through in-person in-services and on-line continuing education.
How many staffers are on duty in the daytime and overnight?
Provision Living at West County provides staff for the Memory Care Neighborhood 24-hours a day. The neighborhood staffing depends on the number of residents who make their home there. Our regulations dictate the number staff required for a memory care specialty neighborhood. We meet or exceed all required staffing for our Memory Care Neighborhood.
What safety features or security measures does Provision Living at West County provide to protect residents who wander?
Resident safety and security are a priority for our team. Safety measures include Sign-in and Sign-out logs at the front entry. All entry and exit doors are alarmed and those alarms are linked to staff pagers. Video security cameras are placed throughout the community and monitored for activity. The front entry doors are locked from 7 p.m.- 8 a.m. daily to provide an additional measure of safety and security. All other doors always remain locked from the outside and require a key code or staff assistance to gain entrance. Residents with a known history of wandering are referred to the care of our Memory Care Neighborhood.

Our Memory Care Neighborhood is designed to engage residents and encourage interaction between residents and caregivers. The neighborhood is intentionally designed to provide “activity” stations that appeal to residents who are may wander or have repetitive behaviors. Dee Dee’s Diner is a 1950s themed common area where residents can gather. The space is open and conducive to those who enjoy walking and offers activities stations for sorting and folding, sensory stimulation, organizing and tactile stimulation. Reminiscing activities often feature a topic and encourage residents to share their experiences from a past time in their lives to stimulate long-term memory.
Who assesses residents' health and cognitive functioning? How often is that assessment repeated?
In addition to our trained caregivers, our director of nursing and wellness manages the assessment of each resident using monthly reviews, regularly scheduled individual service plan updates and ongoing communication with staff and families. Our team establishes a baseline cognitive level for each Memory Care Neighborhood resident during the admission assessment process. Residents are formally re-assessed, and their individual plans are established upon admission and updated every six months or when changes are observed by staff that require a new plan to ensure resident needs are being addressed.
What techniques does Provision Living at West County use to support memory care residents during mealtimes?
Provision Living at West County provides each Memory Care Resident with choices and options for meals. Working with families, we identify “likes” and “dislikes” related to food choices and ensure each resident receives nutritious, well-balanced meals that appeal to the resident’s tastes. Meals are offered in a family-style setting in the dining area of the neighborhood. Caregivers often share the meal with residents providing a modeling opportunity that encourages residents to eat. As resident’s progress through the varying stages of dementia, caregivers may request certain types of foods, for example, finger foods or sweet tasting items that appeal to the resident.

We encourage our families to ask questions, visit with our leadership team and staff whenever possible to ensure we are sharing information effectively and providing for the varying needs of our memory care residents. We provide support and education to families through our experienced Family Support Mentor, Linda Desmet to help further their understanding of the dementia process.

Provision Living at West County is not directly affiliated with a hospital system. However, we are centrally located within minutes of Mercy, Missouri Baptist and St. Luke’s Hospitals. Resident may use our “house” physician, or they may choose to remain in the care of their personal primary care provider. Our clinical team has developed great communication and working relationships with these medical groups so that we may provide exceptional care for our residents.
